I've been working on Banyan Gulf for about a year now, and I wanted to make a post thanking everyone who has followed, read, and supported this project. I'm still slowly but surely working on the game and I'm set on creating a finished project that will live up to all of your expectations. Thank you for being here <3

hi! I was going through this blog and couldn't help but notice how you often mentioned preferring the fem!ROs (being more excited to write them, Louisa being your fave, your love for the dynamic between Louisa and Lorelei) and of course that's your right as the writer! However as a gay man I have no interest in the fem!ROs, so before I try the demo I needed to ask: do the male RO's have an equal amount of content and depth as L&L (and fem!versions for selectables) do?
Yes, definitely!!! I am very excited to write the female ROs, but the male ROs will be getting an equal amount of spotlight. In the demo, it’s Oscar and Ronan/Ruby that reader has the most opportunities to romance. That will level out eventually as the game progresses, and my little lesbian heart favors the female ROs particularly, but I plan on doing all I can to leave out personal preference in this IF and make a game that everyone will enjoy playing, with characters that all have an equal amount of depth and development.
I hope you enjoy the game if you do give it a try, thank you for sending in an ask!!!

Don't know if you've been asked before, but was there an IF game/author (or games/authors) that inspired you to make this project?
Also follow-up, any Horror IF rec?
Oooh yes definitely!!! Some of the IF games and writers that inspired me to get started in IF are Body Count by @bodycountgame , Infamous by @infamous-if , and Wayfarer by @idrellegames . My best friend also inspires me every day to work on my IF, she got me into it in the first place and she is currently working on a horror game right now that I'll be reblogging content for like crazy when it comes out so look out for that.
For horror specifically I would say @circuseyesofgod-if or Body Count that I tagged previously, let me think on it a little and I'll update this post with more horror recs. But in general some IFs I've been enjoying recently are Viatica and Cantata by @fir-fireweed , @tosahobi-if , and Echoes of Olympus by @fableforger .

I know this is probably such a far reach, but I am banking on a supernatural element. It's probably just high hopes but I have a vibe.
Ooooh I feel it!!! Fun fact, before I really created the current plot of Banyan Gulf, I considered making it a horror IF with a primarily supernatural focus. I played the new Alone in the Dark and went 'ok this is my genre'
I think I've said in the past that there won't be many supernatural elements in the story, but recently that's been reconsidered and I've been playing with some new ideas that walk the line between 'ok there's something spooky going on here' and 'everyone is just losing their minds' because I like the idea of leaving the reader guessing when it comes to supernatural elements in stories. The early seasons of Yellowjackets do a good job of that in my opinion, dividing a fandom on if they think there really is something haunting the team or if it's just their own trauma, and providing enough evidence to support both conclusions.
In short, if you're banking on some spooky supernatural, stay tuned. I have many many evil little plans :)

we need more sapphic books and movies that are casually but also openly sapphic. characters who are in love and are confident in that love without having big identity crises. and yes, we do need stories of discovering sexuality and discovering you're sapphic and growing to be confident in your identity, but in my opinion the journey to accepting and being proud of being sapphic would be so much easier if representation of sapphic couples was treated as normal, as beautiful, and as valid. we need more couples like nina and dre from the chi, marla and fran from i care a lot. media where sapphics can just. be sapphic. and that's okay.

Ohhh, just finished the demo and it has left me on a bit of a cliffhanger! I went with the Hall route because I don't trust a thing Lorelai says... except that bit about the will and Luisa. Which. Yikes. I need to know how this story ends now, why do we have Best Girl Bones a year later?
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!! 'Yikes' is so right when it comes to the Lorelei and Luisa drama, everything is so sketchy for now. The route with Hall was so much fun to write in chapter three, I'm really excited about where that route will take you in chapter four and how it will impact the rest of the story.
Bones (the only sane and trustworthy one in the story)!!! I love her so much. Imagine I'm doing a cartoon villain style evil laugh right now for why we have her at the end of the story. The only thing I can say is that everyone goes just a little bit insane.
Thank you for sending this! I love hearing any and all thoughts about the demo, messages like this give me inspiration to write :)

how would the ROs react when MC gets sick?
drew would do anything in their power to help you feel better. they try and make you feel better physically, like going and picking up any medicine you need, but they also realize how much being sick can impact you mentally. drew would try to take your mind off of being sick by learning your favorite song on the guitar and playing it for you - they even mess it up a little here and there just to make you laugh. they promise that as soon as you get better the two of you will take a trip to the beach and you'll take a cooler with your favorite foods and it will all be worth it in the end.
luisa would panic a little at the start because she doesn't know how to help you, but more than anything she wants you to feel better. she monitors you constantly, making sure your pillows are just the way you like them in bed and making sure you're able to keep down enough food and water to support your recovery. she will sit in bed with you or hold you as you sit on the couch and remind you that it's okay to get some sleep because she's not going anywhere and will do anything she can to help. if you have to go to the doctor she will drive you, and she makes sure you get the medicine you need.
oscar would take your sick day as an excuse for a movie marathon. of course he's making sure you're taking your medicine and he's caring for you in all of the usual ways, but he wants to make sure you're entertained throughout your suffering. like drew, he tries to make sure your mind is occupied. he orders the two of you food from your favorite restaurant and goes to pick it up, and when he's back the two of you turn on a movie you've been meaning to see. he doesn't mind if you fall asleep during it, either - as long as he gets to hold you. he will definitely give you a recap of what you missed later, though.
lorelei would take you to the best and most expensive doctors in the city, even if it's just for a common cold. she gets very anxious when you're sick, so as soon as you start coughing or get a little sniffly she's forcing you into the car so she can take you to be seen. afterwards, she takes you back home and tries to comfort you by setting you up with blankets and pillows and telling you funny stories or giving you the latest gossip about everyone in banyan gulf.
hall would cook you the best food when you're sick. they want to make sure you're eating quality food that will help you get better quickly, so they cook all of your meals for you and make sure you're drinking enough water. you have a professional chef with you, so you might as well take advantage of it.

what made you want to write IF? instead of traditional novels / publishing? do you recommend it?
I have experience actually with writing novels and publishing that way too, but under a different pen name, and I think there are benefits to both styles of writing. With interactive fiction I enjoy writing out different choices and routes, and the opportunities the reader has to connect with characters and setting in a more personalized way than is possible in a regular novel. IF also takes away the pressure of designing a main character, but lets you write the main character in a thousand different ways as well. With novels, it's more structured with the way MC acts, and the way MC's relationships fluctuate with other characters. I enjoy getting to explore ROs through interacting with them like that. There is more freedom in general.
One benefit of writing novels, however, is kind of that same point: you have a more defined structure. You only have to plan out one plot, you know that the reader will discover all of the scenes you're writing, and the process is more straightforward. It also doesn't take nearly as much time (for me at least) to write a novel as it does an interactive fiction. The demo of Banyan Gulf took me about four months to write, and it's three chapters long. I have a novel of about five chapters now that I've only been writing for a month. One difficulty of novels though is they're hard to find an audience for sometimes once you publish them, specifically for self-published authors. Unless your marketing goes absolutely crazy, you'll hit dry spells that are tricky to get out of.
Overall, I do recommend writing interactive fiction. The community is so welcoming and accepting, and there's no pressure to be perfect. Definitely give it a try.

For anyone interested, I just posted some chapter four sneak peeks on Patreon! More will be coming very soon, so if you’re curious about what our sketchy ROs are up to in Synnøve’s basement, purchase a month of the Banyan Gulf membership and become Banyan Gulf’s greatest spy — and gain access to all of the short stories I’ve been posting since February. Also, you will have my eternal love and appreciation, if you’d like it.
