i’m sick of seeing people only drag MC on my dash so you know what? i’ve got a list of reasons why MC is great

highly kind & empathetic. she’s able to put herself in her man’s shoes & understand the pain he’s been through, providing him with someone who understands him & thus making him feel SAFE and LOVED

self-aware. she’s aware that she’s a human in a mansion of vampires & that she’s weaker than them. she’s also aware of her own feelings, able to recognise when she’s upset, angry etc. (PS. her denying her feelings when she first starts falling for her guy does NOT mean she’s unaware of them. she is, but she’s denying them, which is honestly a natural reaction that most people can relate to)

she cares deeply for them and puts their feelings before hers. in isaac’s route, she’s willing to leave the mansion even though it would break her heart bc she’s afraid staying would mean hurting him even more

takes responsibility for her actions when she’s fucked up. in isaac’s route, she was the first to reach out & apologise to him after that incident happened. in vincent’s route when she realises she mistook the paint on his clothes or something for blood, she immediately apologises & admits her mistake. in leonardo’s route, she recognises she made a rash decision & takes responsibility for it. in napoleon’s route, she realises she hurt him when she pushed him away (y’know after he threatened to kill that priest dude) and sought him out to apologise & to hear him out

doesn’t act like an entitled princess. she knows they’re doing her a great kindness by letting her stay in the mansion, so she doesn’t take any of that for granted but in fact is willing to “work for her board and keep” by helping out around the mansion, as well as attending the ball in mozart’s route even though she wasn’t 100% comfortable with the idea

open-minded. initially she was frightened of them being vampires (and who wouldn’t be?) but she’s willing to give them a chance after learning they’re just friendly neighbourhood vampires. in fact across several routes, she gets frightened by her guy & pushes him away, but later decides she wants to try and understand him bc she wants to accept him (eg. napoleon, arthur)

protective of her man & is willing to fight for him. refer to: the climax of arthur & isaac’s routes

does her best in whatever she does, whether it was being a travel agent back in the day, or helping sebas with the chores, theo with his art dealer stuff, arthur with his detective shtick, or vincent with his painting.

optimistic/positive vibes. this is best exemplified in napoleon’s route where he asked her, “what if nothing good happens in a day? what would you write about?” and she told him she’d try to find one good thing about that day, even if it was something small like the umbrella she packed being a good parasol to protect her from the sun, or turn it into advice for others.

enjoys learning new things & shows genuine interest in what her man does (eg. listening to isaac’s tangents even if most of it flies right over her head, helping arthur with his detective shtick, modelling for vincent even though the idea was weird to her at first, helping theo with his work & learning to enjoy it)

also it’s really cool that she can speak multiple languages. granted, it’s with varying degrees of fluency as theo said in his 1st letter that she needs to work on her dutch, but the fact that she knows enough to converse with theo is impressive enough especially since she also speaks japanese as her native tongue, french (most likely since she IS in 19th century paris), and possibly even english (i like to think she communicates with arthur & isaac in english tho idk if there’s actual proof of this)

also also her narration can be fucking hilarious

by no means is she perfect (she could afford to make better decisions & not jump to conclusions, as well as be a little LESS trusting especially in vincent’s route) but from the way some people talk about her you’d think she’s this horrible scum of the earth when she is in fact…… wait for it….. and hold on to your wigs so they don’t get snatched:

this goes back to my rant about how characters are ALLOWED to be flawed. people don’t always make the right decisions all the time. people don’t always say the right thing and may as a result end up hurting someone. people don’t always take the time to think through their actions before diving recklessly headfirst into trouble. if she didn’t have these flaws people would be up in arms calling her a mary sue (yes i’ve seen that)

but people can have good traits too: being kind. being empathetic. being open-minded. being willing to learn. this may come as a shock to some people, but having a mix of good AND bad traits is what makes MC human and a relatable character. sometimes she does stuff i don’t necessarily agree with, but i like her well enough.

anyways i’m not saying you have to kowtow to MC or anything lmao just give the poor woman a break bc she’s doing her best 🤷🏻‍♀️

So I don’t know if y’all know this, but I’m a historian. I actually majored in History in college. So when I play these otome, if I don’t know much about the real life dude, I like to look into who they actually were.

And since we all chuggin’ Theo appreciation juice, I thought I might share something about his real life!

Namely - why MC has such cajones in his route and why he treats her with such respect and equal partnership.

Introducing, Theo Van Gogh’s actual wife - Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger! Here’s some bullet points about this absolute powerhouse of a fuckin woman!

Accomplished piano player and studied English and earned basically a college degree. A woman. In the late 1800s.

Spoke and read Dutch, French, and English and worked in the British Museum library.

Was an English teacher at an all girl’s boarding school.

Met Theo through her older brother, and a year after he met her he proposed and she responded with “No, are you nuts? I barely friggin’ know you! Who even are you? The fuck???”

Theo, a smart man, was like “Aight fair fair fair,” and got closer to her over the following year, and then when he proposed again she accepted.

Had a baby they named Vincent, after Theo’s big bro because Ikémen got it right that Theo be sippin’ on that Brother appreciation juice. Vincent was super pleased with his nephew and painted Almond Blossoms to celebrate the little guy!

But then both Vincent and Theo died, leaving Johanna widowed with a lil’ baby so she was like “fuck.” Cause all she had was an apartment in Paris with like 200 of Vincent’s paintings in them and they were of zero value at the time.

Her family and friends were like “yo those paintings suck and you have a baby, get rid of them.” And she was like “How about I do what I want, fuck off” and ended up opening a boarding house and started re-rubbing elbows with the artists she had been friends with when Theo was alive

Also translated short stories into Dutch to earn extra cash

Became a founding member of a Women’s Socialist Movement in Amsterdam.

CREATED AN EXHIBITION OF VINCENT’S WORK!!!

that’s right, this bitch was such a boss that she fuckin is the reason that Vincent is so famous today. She created a book from all the letters Theo and Vincent sent each other and then translated that book into French and English. Then she wrote a biography on the Van Gogh family. Then she donated different pieces of Vincent’s work to different exhibitions to gain more notoriety.

AND THEN SHE MOVED THEO’S GRAVE TO BE BURIED NEXT TO VINCENT CAUSE SHE KNEW HE BE DRINKING THAT BROTHER APPRECIATION JUICE!!!!

Long story short there was no way in hell Ikémen Theo would fall in love with a weak willed woman that gave no pushback, he was absolutely in love with his real life wife, Vincent adored his sister in law, and they can thank Johanna that anyone knows who Vincent is today

Imagine her facing the residents.

Imagine Jean seeing her.

Jean literally leans over her, his face inches away from hers.

Everyone is tense.

"Can I touch your face?"

Normally she would have blown him off. She would have even told him how inappropriate that question was. But this was Jean, straight from the Middle Age. The poor soul probably had never been as close to someone like her. And even if Jean had been it would have been in very different circumstances. So she let him.

It was a clumsy touch. His fingers grazed her cheek over to her nose and the down to her mouth.

"Your lips are different," Jean says.

"Everyone's lips are different" She explains.

While at any other time Arthur would have taken the opportunity to make a suggestive comment. No lne of the other residents dared to interrupt them.

"Your scars are different too," Jean points out as he taps on a tiny scar on her hand.

"But my blood is the same," MC answers.

"You're beautiful," Jean beams in awe. He looks like a child.

MC blushes, she expected anything but this.

"And your hands! They are like kitty paws! See, light inside and dark outside," Jean takes her hands and shows them to everyone.

Sebastian intervenes.

"Now Jean. You're startling MC"

MC smiles at Sebastian as a thank you. It would take time but step by step the residents would learn more about her, her boundaries. Especially Jean.

Needless to say that one time MC did her braids in front of Jean and he begged her to teach him.

It's awkward, sometimes hurtful and sometimes sweet. They all learn to live together for the moment and who knows maybe for the long term.

They teach her about their lives, their time and even if it seems like taking thousands of steps backwards, it's fascinating.

She teaches them about hers even if it's difficult to put everything into words.
