When they arrived at Shouta’s office, he motioned for them to sit while he was leaning against his desk. Kirishima sat down meekly with his shoulders hunched forward. Unlike Kirishima, Ashido was vibrating in her seat as though she was physically incapable of keeping still.

“Teach, what did you call us in for? I was looking forward to taking a cold shower,“ Ashido chirped, her eyes wandering briefly to the left corner of his office. “My shift was insane and ran over. I feel all grimy.“

“That's interesting,“ Shouta drawled and narrowed his eyes. “When I called the agency you're interning with, they told me you begged to be let off a bit earlier and they allowed it. Want to try again?“

One day, probably soon, Shouta would throw all of his problem children into an utility closet, lock the door and punt the key across the country. After he let them know that breaking the door would result in detention every day until they were old enough to retire from being a hero. On second thought, he had so many problem children this year, he'd need at least three utility closets to fit them all in.

In a flash, Shouta grabbed his capture gear and slunk through his door. The reason for the noise wasn’t too far away. In fact, she was at the top of the stairs, her hands inching along the wall and about to go down. When Shouta straightened up and sighed, though, Eri froze and turned to him with wide, terrified eyes. She swallowed hard as she began shaking, her nails digging into the wall paper.

All those signs of abuse, Shouta hated. They reminded him that despite living with him, Eri was still afraid of him. She obviously still believed that if she took a step out of line, Shouta would punish her, hard. Or lock her away.

Interesting that she was risking angering him in the middle of the night, anyway. (Shouta wouldn’t punish her if she had a good reason. Getting fresh air was a good reason. Wanting to see the sky was a good reason. Running away wasn’t. Sneaking around to hoard food wasn’t.)

Their first problem was the conception. While the organs they had implanted were working, the Asset was still more or less chemically castrated. Unfortunately, this seemed to apply to its new organs also. But when they lowered the dosage, the Asset refused to be bred. By killing anyone that tried.
