ORCAS IN PERIL – HERE WE GO AGAIN
The story below, in USA Today, was written two days after a Chinese conglomerate called Zhonghong Zhuoye Group bought a 21% stake in SeaWorld for nearly half a billion dollars. Zhonghong plans to open aquatic theme parks in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and all over mainland China. Now, fast-forward to mid-October, 2017. SeaWorld announces the layoff of some 350 employees due to rapidly declining attendance at its parks. This, of course, puts enormous pressure on the company’s bottom line. In the wake of the documentary, “Blackfish,” SeaWorld had vowed to stop its orca breeding program and phase out the whales’ performances. But will the Chinese follow suit? Or, will they exploit the orcas for financial gain as SeaWorld and others have done for decades.
