          there’s a fond smile on his lips, small but very present, from the moment he brings up his niece–it’s something that happens instantly every single time, and it always has with both yang and ruby. it’s almost impossible not to feel that familiar, pleasant warmth in his chest when he’s talking about his family, especially when he feels safe to show just a little bit more vulnerability. jaune isn’t his friend, but at least he can trust him with this.

          “heh. only the good things, i hope,” he responds rather casually, closing his fist around the casing once again and slipping it into his pocket, “not that they’d ever have it in ‘em to talk down on me.”

                   it makes qrow more human to him, when he considers how much the man cares for his family. not to say he’s heartless or a monster, but jaune has seen more of the negative traits in qrow than the ones soft and warm like these. drunk, angry, doubtful, those sorts of things. but this was...genuine. 

                  “well, ruby usually always has good things to say about you,” he replies honestly. ruby thought the entire world of her uncle. yang loved him, too, but she’s been more...open about his shortcomings in the times they’ve talked. he doesn’t feel the need to elaborate on this, though. 

               “yang told me you helped ruby make her scythe,” he comments, “you must know a lot about weapons.”

             will jaune ever feel like he deserves the position he was given as leader? he will as soon as he stops blaming himself for pyrrha’s death. 

            (it’s a joke because he will never stop blaming himself, ever, because it’s trauma that he cannot let go of.)

this is unexpected, making winter blink in surprise. if anything, she thought it would be harriet or maybe even weiss coming to see her, not jaune. they’d hardly spoken outside of whenever she’d address their teams but they’d never had any conversations away from the others.

‘ it must be important if you came to see me, of all people, ‘  she notes with a soft sigh. sure, her small respite was disturbed but she told herself she’d help weiss & her friends however she could, even if they just had questions for her.  ‘ come in, jaune. you said you wanted to ask me something? ‘

                 he feels even sillier when she says the word important because really, it’s not that important, it’s just something winter is more well-versed to answer him. he considers the opportunity to talk to a special operative of the atlesian military, a skilled huntress and maiden one he would be stupid to pass up, even if it means potentially getting reprimanded for wasting her time. 

                jaune scoots in further, timid a bit and he even jumps when the door closes behind him, giving away his nerves, “yea! yea i just...well, your experience and whatnot, i just figured i could..ask a few things. weiss says you’re good with straight answers,” a hand reaches up to rub at the back of his head, blue eyes glancing down at his feet, “it’s about...it’s about leadership? and choices. it’s been awhile since beacon, and i still feel like i’m making all the wrong ones...”

              it comes out of his mouth and he feels even sillier, jaune shaking his head after a moment and pointing behind him toward the door, “sorry, this is stupid, i’ll just go.”

          there’s always a very obvious unspoken tension between them, something that qrow has never tried to pry at–he gleaned just about all he needed to know about jaune’s opinion of him that night around the campfire where he first told them everything, and he can’t imagine it’s changed all that much in his time with them. recently, maybe, but at the very best they’re simply tolerating each other right now.

          and he still forgets, sometimes, that they know about his gift. it’s a secret he’s kept for so long that it isn’t often he actually gets to explain his odd habits truthfully, but he hears jaune laugh and he knows it’s that realization made for himself. “not always,” he rolls his eyes lightheartedly, lifting the shell casing up slightly to hold it in front of himself between his thumb and forefinger, examining it fondly, “but i want to show it to yang. thought she might find it interesting.”

                   maybe it’s rude to laugh. he’s not sure. he doesn’t know the specifics on wizard magic, believe it or not. qrow seems to take it in stride, though. something tells jaune qrow would let him get away with quite a few things considering their history, but he’s not the type to take pot shots without a reason. 

                  “hnn,” he makes a noise to indicate the man has been heard, giving a soft nod before glancing at the round he holds between his fingers. it seems so mundane, and yet it makes qrow think of his niece, “she talks about you a lot,” he says, “her and ruby both.”

                 he’s terrified of approaching but weiss told him he could. it was only recently he’s not felt so nervous around weiss, her sister is a whole other story. but the arc steels his nerve, and knocks to announce his presence....

                only to notice the sign on the door right after. oh no, he’s already messed up-! he wants to turn and leave but she’s already noticed a presence. he stands, a deer in headlights for a breath, before nerves resolve themselves, and he presses a hand to push the door further open. blond head peeks inside, “i, uh, sorry, i just...i wanted to ask you something? but it’s not important, i can leave you alone, sorry--”

‘ there’s a do not disturb sign on my door for a reason… ‘  she’s looking at her now cracked door, head propped up by gloved hand as she wonders who’s on the other side that she can’t see just yet. winter just wanted a few minutes of quiet away from everyone but it looks like she’s not getting her wish now. so much for that idea.  ‘ what is it? ‘

          corvid blinks, his own gaze a little curious as it lifts from his treasure to glance in jaune’s direction–has this kid ever talked to him without having to? not in a while, he’s sure, but then again he can’t really blame him.

          qrow clears his throat awkwardly, opening his hand to reveal the object in his palm, “a shell casing,” it’s spent, but the metal is still surprisingly pristine, glinting a little bit in the sunlight that cuts through the window into the van’s cabin, “it held a dust round, once. probably fire.”

                 jaune’s feelings toward qrow were mixed, at best, and he’s not done much about hiding this fact, either. for ruby and yang’s sake, he works with qrow. and from his own instinct, he knows qrow is an asset. so they work fine together. however, that didn’t mean he’s forgotten what the man has done. 

                  “a shell casing?” he knows what one is, he’s more asking as to why the man has kept it in the first place. there’s not use for it now, it’s essentially trash. but...well. birds and shiny things. jaune feels a chuckle bubble out of him before he can remind himself he’s trying to be angry for no reason, “do you always pick up things like that?”

                   maybe he’s been trying to ignore the old crow for the majority of their convoy, but the dead silence on the tundra is hard to ignore after awhile. eventually, arc gives in to curiosity, and leans over to look, “what’d you find?”

          he found something shiny, and he’s having a very good time toying with it in his hands.

                   jaune had a lot of feelings regarding emerald hopping on their “team” so to speak. yang said her piece, but you can’t tell me that both jaune and ren weren’t thinking of pyrrha too. they lost her due to a plan that emerald played a part in. if anyone has the right to feel some type of way about emerald being around, it’s jaune and ren. but i also think it’s poignant to remember that jaune waited at their flank to make sure everyone filed out of the giant whale grimm - including emerald. he was waiting for oscar above all else, but he made sure emerald got out as well. that’s super important to him as a leader, he can never not look out for everyone. 

                 he has so many mixed feelings regarding her. he doesn’t want to let her go because he wants he to know what she did, how badly she hurt them all. but i don’t think his anger is as bitter as yang’s. but it’s still there. you can hear it in his voice when they’re walking through the tunnel. 

                i would like a moment between them where he can express to her what he lost, what they all lost, at beacon. i’m not sure if we’ll ever get it, but i’m nonetheless excited to see any interaction between the two of them in the future.

               ren and jaune deserved to be told what happened to nora i mean i know it’s coming we’re gonna see it eventually but it’s gonna be like an ‘after the fact’ idea and mAN i just wanted to see that.

if you had shown first year jaune himself now i don’t think he would have believed he was capable of it. leading a team into a literal hellscape to try and save one of their own....

the fact he believes they were going to save oscar and get out with all of his  heart comes from the fact he couldn’t save pyrrha, no doubt. he vowed, ever since, that he would never let one of their own fall again if he could do something about it. he takes it personally, he believes it so much because he can’t fail. if they did, they’d lose oscar, and it just wasn’t an option. 

i don’t think jaune is completely fearless, but i just think that his drive and desire to save everyone overpowers everything else. you can’t tell me they all weren’t terrified of salem when they faced her, but finding oscar? that was never not an option.

          ren stating that jaune believes they’re going to get their mission done is just so heartwarming and pure. also this episode fueled my martial arcs need for at least another month so i’m just. hm.

          and he hugged! oscar! god he was so happy! maybe not so tight next time he’s hurt but STILL.
