Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.
Basically: this is everything I know of as of April 12, 2024. There might be more. I tried.
For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.
Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.

Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page
Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).
Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)
No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.
Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

[Hanfu · 漢服]Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) Traditional Clothing Hanfu &  Lantern Festival 元宵節
【About Lantern Festival/ Shangyuan Festival (元宵節/上元節)
Today is The Lantern Festival also called Shangyuan Festival (上元節), is a Chinese traditional festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar, during the full moon. Usually falling in February or early March on the Gregorian calendar, it marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC–AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance.
During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns (猜燈謎). In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones.As below Ming Dynasty court paintings【明宪宗元宵行乐图 】:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It depicts the lively scenes of watching lanterns, watching operas and setting off firecrackers in the inner court on the Lantern Festival in the 21st year of Chenghua (1485).Among them we can see a lot of large ornate lanterns in this painting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the same time, we can also see the children in the palace carrying lanterns of various shapes
Tumblr media
The painting is very long, and it is a custom painting reflecting the celebration of the Lantern Festival in the court of the Ming Dynasty.
【Customs of Lantern Festival in Ming and Qing Dynasties: 走百病 】
Also known as "游百病You Baibing", "散百病San Baibing", etc., it is a traditional folk culture in the north china since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Some of them are held on the Lantern Festival, but most of them are held on the next day of the Lantern Festival.
On this day, women dressed in formal costumes, walked out of the house in groups, crossed bridges, climbed the tower over a city gate, and touch the nails on the city gate to pray for hopes of good health and longevity until midnight before going back home. Besides, touch the nails on the city gate it also pray for having child(摸钉求子)."Nail钉" are same pronunciation as Ding丁,It can be associated with the word "人丁Ren Ding": a Chinese word that originally refers to an adult man and later refers to the population.Basically, it is to pray for to have more and more family members in the future(child).
Tumblr media
【Customs of Lantern Festival in Ming and Qing Dynasties: 戴闹蛾 】
The so-called“ 闹蛾 Nào é ”is a kind of headgear worn by women in ancient China, with silk or black gold paper in the shape of flowers or insects. It has been popular from Song Dynasty to Qing Dynasty. From some unearthed hair accessories in Ming Dynasty, we can also see a lot of insect-themed hair accessories, such as: 1. 玉叶金蟾头饰,Ming Dynasty:
Tumblr media
2. 金镶宝石蜘蛛簪,Ming Dynasty,Collection of Nanjing Museum
Tumblr media
3.垒丝镶红蓝宝石蝴蝶形金步摇,Ming Dynasty,Collection of GuamfuMuseum
Tumblr media
In addition, eating glutinous rice balls 汤圆 during the Lantern Festival is also a traditional customs in china, the practice and filling of glutinous rice balls in different regions may also be different.

-Ren Pingsheng in Detail-
Book series: I’m more dangerous than you.
Tumblr media
(Warning: Detailed info about murder, images shown contains blood and gore, this is all fictional)
About Ren: Ren Pingsheng is a substitute Chinese language teacher at Huanyang University, because the previous teacher is on a Maternity leave. She is known to be the most knowledgeable Chinese language Professor in the University. She kills people based on a crime novel written by Jiang Wanshu. Basically in short she recreates the novel in real life. (In the story Jiang falls in love with Ren)
Murder 1: There was this debt collector that was bothering Jiang because her father owed money to them. So Ren cut off his left hand and removed his heart, then she wrote on a small piece of paper “Karma’s a bitch” folded that piece of paper and put it in his mouth. She then dragged the corpse to a place called “Yokohama Beach” and took a photo of the body and left the corpse there.
Murder 2: There was a bully named Nie Jiaxuan she would bully Jiang. One rainy night when Nie was in a dark alleyway, Ren approached her and spoke to her. The situation escalated and Nie was backing away from Ren but she tripped and fell. While she was on the ground, Ren stomped on her both of her hands and hamstrings causing them to snap open and bleed out. She died of loss of blood, Ren took a picture of the corpse and put the body in a bag. Then she went to her unfinished sculpture and stuffed the corpse in the sculpture and finished the rest of the sculpture. Then placed it in a museum, and later on someone accidentally broke the sculpture causing the corpse to be discovered.
Left image: The finished sculpture.
Middle Image: The broken sculpture.
Right Image: Pics she took of all her killings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
. .
Jiang was staying at Ren’s house for a few days and starts to figure out that someone is recreating her novel in real life but she doesn’t know who it is. She wrote in her novel and killed the serial killer to finally put an end to all this. Once Ren read it she got angry that Jiang decided to just kill off the killer like that, so she went to Jiang and choked her until she went unconscious. Then chained her up to the bed, and when Jiang woke up they talked for a bit (well more like Jiang cursing at Ren) Ren unchains her and tells her that she’s not allowed to leave and that she has to update the novel and write the wonderful resurrection of the killer. Jiang goes against her orders and Ren takes a knife and slices off Jiang’s pinky finger on her right hand. Ren threatens to kill Jiang’s best friend and eventually out of fear Jiang decides to update the novel.
Murder 3: Jiang had another bully named Huang Qian, she tried to make everyone in the University believe that Jiang is responsible for the murders. Qian received letters from a secret admirer and she was going to find out who it is by meeting them where the letter said to go. Little did she know that it was all just a trick. Ren appeared behind her and hit her on the back of the neck with a baseball bat, causing her to fall unconscious. (This was at night) Ren then drags her to a classroom and chains her to the desk. When Qian woke up she started yelling and trash talking about Jiang so Ren kicks her in the face causing her nose to bleed. Ren decides to play a game of Russian roulette with Qian, but instead of a real gun it’s a nail gun. The rules are when it’s Qian’s turn Ren will fire the gun at her hands and when it’s Ren’s turn she’ll point the gun to her own temple. They both took 2 turns and Qian was the only one that got shot twice, her screaming alerted Rujun (Jiang’s best friend). Rujun was at the University at night to clear her head. Rujun finds Qian and gets tased by Ren. Ren then uses a Professional Craniotomy Device to make a cranial incision and took out the brain tissue and replaced it with soil and flower petals (specifically Poppies). Then Ren takes them outside and Qian is placed in a chair, with Rujun in another chair in front of her. When the police get there in the morning, they lock up Rujun and in the cell she develops PTSD.
..
(She killed more people than this but these are the murders that were shown. Also there’s more to the story)
Tumblr media
To: @bunny-n3zuk0, here’s more info about what we were talking about since you wanted to know more about the murders Ren committed. I was going to include more but I decided to be merciful and let this digest in your brain. I have to be careful to not overwhelm you.

Charlotte Li - An Introduction
Name: Born as Li Xiulan, but took the name Charlotte Li in her earliest ventures out of Chinatown, and has rarely used her birth name at all since leaving New York.
Title(s): Miss
Referred to as: Miss, Miss Li
Nickname(s): Char to those closest to her, Lottie to acquaintances in the world of entertainment, though she's not especially fond of the nickname.
Age: Thirty
Gender: Cis woman
Sexual orientation: Bisexual
Occupation: Lady's Maid to Lady Faye Manderley
Nationality: American
Religion: Chinese folk religion, only practiced in small, private ways
Class: Working
Place of birth: Chinatown, New York City, USA
Hometown: As above
Faceclaim: Jing Tian
Physical description
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 112lbs
Build: Slender, with soft curves, and strong calves and forearms
Distinguishing marks: Scars, moles, and the like.
Hair colour: Jet black
Hair style: Typically worn pinned away from her face, in gentle curls. Despite the fashion of the times, Charlotte has never been able to bring herself to cut it shorter than mid-back.
Eye colour: Deep brown, dark enough to appear black in certain light.
Clothing: While not especially stylish, Charlotte keeps up with the fashion of the times when not in uniform. She prefers clean, simple styles, mostly in neutrals and muted hues. She is loathe to throw anything away, and though she's far from an expert seamstress, is practiced at keeping older clothing looking smart.
Scents: Freshly washed linen, cut flowers, and a light spray of rosewater
Accent: Neutral American, and although she has worked hide it, her natural Chinese accent sometimes slips through when her guard is down.
Personality
Summary: Fitting of her assumed role as lady's maid, Charlotte, at least at a glance, may seem to slip into the background. With a timid nature and a sensitive spirit, in another life Charlotte may have scarcely left her native New York, let alone America. But oh, she is so desperately glad she did. Her travels have not made her bold and brash, and she has never possessed much in the way of charisma, but she has learned to hold her own in matters of business, if not in matters of the heart. Still, while she loves so dearly, there is a lonely, jealous streak in her that only seems to grow deeper with each passing season. Charlotte wishes she could rid herself of it, but, put simply, she never has been able to help her heart.
Virtues: Diligent, loyal, gentle, romantic, mild-mannered
Vices: Avoidant, critical, sensitive, indecisive, prone to holding grudges over even petty matters
Moral alignment: Neutral Good
Natal chart: Pisces in the Western Zodiac, born in the year of the Snake in the Chinese Zodiac
Habits: Humming while she works, mumbling to herself in Mandarin, saving scraps, rising early, daydreaming, lip biting, smoothing non-existent creases in her clothes
Character tropes: Elinor Dashwood (Sense & Sensibility), Sook-hee (The Handmaiden), Amélie Poulain (Amélie)
Family ties
Parent(s): Li Shufen (mother, deceased), Li Jianhong (father, estranged)
Sibling(s): None
Spouse: Unmarried
Child/ren: None
Miscellaneous headcanons:
Coming soon
Wanted plots
Crush. Charlotte can't quite help herself, her affections develop so easily. She rarely ever acts on them, but recently longing has become a more constant companion, and thus she might be a little less subtle with her warm glances, shy smiles, and pink cheeks. How the other muse feels about her affections, or if they've even noticed, is entirely up for discussion. Open to upstairs or downstairs, any gender.
Guide. Someone (probably downstairs?) willing to help Charlotte, who is not always in tune with the nuances of service and the workings of Manor Houses, navigate life at Montmere. Could be out of the goodness of their heart, or perhaps because there's something that they want from Charlotte or her employer.
Animosity. They've picked up on the fact that Charlotte simply does not have the formal training typically expected of someone in her position, and thus find her an unwelcome presence at Montmere. Could be quiet resentment, open disdain, or even actively trying to remove her from the estate. Open to upstairs or downstairs.
Unexpected Reunion. Friends, acquaintances or business associates met during Faye's European tours. Could be someone Charlotte quietly longed after, a short but meaningful friendship, someone she clashed with in financial matters, or anything else really.

Smooth Jazz
Jazz x Gender Neutral Reader
Warnings: gets a lil heated at the end, mostly Jazz being flustered baby
He wasn't used to this, that's what the problem was. Sure, flirting was second nature to this particular clone and wooing pretty girls was his MO, but there was something about you... you were different... and that flustered him. The moment Boss brought him and the other clones out to meet you and he was finally able to meet your eyes for real? Jazz swore the heart that never had a chance to beat nearly leapt from his chest - and it baffled the hell out of him. It wasn't the normal feeling - that he was used to. Hell, it might've even been preferable if he tried to get into your pants first meeting but instead he was reduced to a stammering, blushing mess. It was absolutely pathetic. And there was nothing he could do about it other than silently watch you from a distance and gather little trinkets he thought you might like but never had the courage to actually give to you. He felt like Chameleon with stupid things like flowers he thought were pretty, feathers that shimmered in the sunlight, a teddy bear holding a heart, little tapes of him singing love songs - it was downright sad. And yet he couldn't throw any of it away on the off chance that one day he managed to reclaim the shattered remains of his balls and be demon enough to give them to you.
For now, he was reduced to a simpering child, ducking out of the room each time you walked in because he was scared he might blurt out something stupid like "your hair is pretty" or a spontaneous love song. Yes. It was that bad. Thankfully, he thought he was managing well enough himself, no one seemed to see much of a difference and you were none the wiser about his awkward crush.... right?
.....
He was in trouble. It wasn’t often that Boss went on a job without him, ever since he toppled Juno and rose up in popularity in the Netherworld he was swamped with work that constantly had him running out to deal with problems from bioexorism to helping some ghouls find their lover that had died years before them and anything in between. Hell, Jazz himself had been called in to help set up entertainment in one of the many speakeasies that ran through the Netherworld. Now that that drag Juno was dead, they didn’t have to hide the fun stuff and that meant some truly rocking parties these days. Jazz had even fantasized about bringing you down to one, netherworld booze was truly something special and taking you out on a night on the town was kinda hard up on the surface. But, returning to the subject at hand, Boss was out on a job and Jazz was left home on his own - well, that wasn’t entirely right, Jazz was left alone with you. All he had gotten in the form of warning was Cici giving him a cryptic message of ‘Have fun’ on their way out before Jazz had been told by Boss that he was to stay and make sure everything was alright at home. Whatever that meant. Surely no one was stupid enough to try and hurt their babes, barring the arrival of some human carrying a monumental death wish, but there wasn’t any arguing before Boss and the others were gone, leaving Jazz to gape helplessly at the smoke left behind.  They even took Chamie and Jay with them! Thankfully, you seemed to sense the awkward air and told Jazz you had some chores to get done while the house was empty, but he couldn’t just sit by and watch while you were hard at work, right? So, he found himself completely out of his element, wearing some frilly apron with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows as he washed the dishes, setting them aside for you to dry.
Cleaning wasn’t exactly any of the clones forte, Ren, Bee and Wasp were better at it than the others, but when they first came, you had spent a good week getting each clone to wash up separately - Jazz had conveniently managed to weasel out of that particular lesson by jumping inside of one of the Netherworld’s boiling lakes and dumping a good gallon of bleach on himself to pass the scent test. But he almost regretted that particular decision now as you gently led him through the process of cleaning up, praising him when he did a good job and giggling softly when he made some silly mistake. He almost wanted to record that giggle just so he could listen to it on repeat, but he knew part of what made it so cute was seeing your face light up. Fuck, he had it bad. He hoped he was doing a decent job of maintaining his cool and smooth persona, but some part of him feared he was just staring at you slack jawed in awe like some moron. Hopefully you didn’t notice.
“What’s up next?” His voice was thankfully level this time, no more of those embarrassing stutters, though he thought he felt his heart catch in his throat as you gave a soft, inquisitive, hum, your lips pursed in thought as you scanned the kitchen,
“Well, would you mind helping me get dinner started?” He blanched at the thought. Him? Cooking?? He was half surprised the oven didn’t implode at the very sight of him, but what was he going to do? Say no to you? So he gave a hesitant nod, forcing himself to give what he hoped was a carefree smile but could have just been a grimace.
“What do you want to make?” That cute expression was back as you mused over what you had in the kitchen before you gave him a bright smile.
“I know what we should make!” You reached out and took his still soapy hand, pulling him out of the kitchen and back to the living room. “Some fucking take out. I’ll have to go shopping tomorrow and fill up on groceries anyways.” You declared, pushing him onto the couch before you flung yourself down onto the couch next to him - almost into his lap. “I’m thinking Chinese, how bout you?” You continued on, seemingly unaware of Jazz’s tense form next to you as he prayed to whatever god was out there and listening that he wouldn’t self combust or pop a boner or pass out or - your thighs were splayed over his lap, your hands in the air, gesturing vaguely as you mused over what everyone would want to eat and the Chinese place you had discovered with Bee when you went out on a date with the other clone. Jealousy curdled in the pit of his stomach, the idea of Bee being able to take you out and see that pretty smile while Jazz was stuck pining from afar was a sour one, and perhaps it was the jealousy that finally gave him the push he needed to reach up and grab your chin, turning your head so he could press a kiss to your lips. His fingers splayed across your neck, the other reaching around you to cradle your head as he deepened the kiss. Even as some panicked voice in the back of his head screamed at him for the hasty action, your hands clutched the frilly apron he still wore desperately, little whimpers escaping you as you rubbed your thighs together.
He didn’t know how long he kissed you, he could have died again like this if he could, but soon he remembered that humans needed to breathe, so he pulled back just enough to see your flushed and needy expression, the sight of you making his ego swell back to its normal size.
“Heh, just a kiss got you so flustered?” He purred, easily shifting your body on his lap so that you were straddling him, his hands splayed across your still squirming thighs. “Shouldn’t we order the takeout before everyone gets back?” He asked, his smile growing as you pouted at him. “Or are you hungry for something else, little songbird?”

The Beauty of Being Numb | Klaus Hargreeves x Reader
Index
Chapter Five: Klaus Does Something Stupid (and no one is surprised)
Tumblr media
-Close your eyes, dummy!
-I can't! Every time I close my eyes, I see a diarrhetic hippo about to shit on my face. It's terrifying!
(Y/N) laugh can be heard all over the mansion.
-What is that even supposed to mean?
Klaus closes his eyes.
-No! No... It's awful!
-How am I supposed to make you sleep if you don't close your eyes?
-Will you take that terrific hippo out of my head?
-Yes.
-I trust you, girl- he points at her accusingly as she laughs again.
Klaus lies down on her bed, closing his eyes and covering with the knitted blanket. (Y/N) puts a hand on his forehead, her eyes glowing, trying to make him sleep... But Klaus starts making noises again.
-Nop, the hippo it's still there.
-Klaus, I can't concentrate, stop!- she laughs.
-Then sing to me- he opens one eye to look at her.
-I can't sing in English.
-I know... Sign me that german song you sang me at rehab, remember?
-And you'll stop mentioning the diarrheic hippo?
-Oh, sure.
-Okay.
He closes his eyes again, and she lays beside him, her right hand on his forehead.
-Guten Abend, gut' Nacht, mit Rosen bedacht, mit Näglein besteckt, schlupf' unter die Deck': Morgen früh, wenn das Universum will, wirst du wieder geweckt.
She stops singing, noticing Klaus is already snoring and that she feels uncomfortable and dipsy. She can't see the hippo, but can definitely sense how awkward it made Klaus feel.
-Goodnight, meine Liebe. (my love)
(Y/N) gives him a small kiss on the forehead and lays beside him, close to him, but not enough to touch him.
When her alarm goes off the next morning, she opens her eyes slowly, adjusting to the light, expecting to see Klaus on the other side. But to her surprise, his spot is empty and cold.
Still sleepy, the girl gets out of bed and goes to the bathroom, but he isn't there either. She peeks inside his room and Diego's, but he isn't anywhere to be seen.
Barefoot, she intends to go to the kitchen, but when she walks past the living room, she hears some grunting from the living room. She enters the room to discover a mess on the floor and Klaus sleeping on a couch with only his underwear on.
-No... No... No...- he was having a nightmare.
-Klaus- she kneels and shakes him a little-. Klaus, love, wake up.
-No!- he wakes up, sweating and hyperventilating.
-Hey, it's just me- she touches his arm, calming him down.
-Oh...
Without caring (Y/N) is there, he crawls through to floor to his coat, searching for drugs.
-Shut your piehole, Ben!- he says to the empty chair at his right.
-Is Ben here?- (T/N) looks around, as if she would be able to see him too.
-He's always up my ass... Said with love- he blows a kiss to the chair.
She watches as he stands up and lights a cigarette. For a moment, she can't look away, her gaze passing all over his body with admiration.
-Can't smoke eggs- he says, making her look away blushing.
-I'm sorry, do you want eggs?
-No, I said I can't smoke eggs... Can you lend me money?
-I'm not fonding your addiction, Klaus.
-Fine- he walks to the showcase on the wall-. One of these had gotta be gold-plated, right?
She wants to stop him, but she's too distracted looking at his butt.
Suddenly, someone clears their throat, scaring both adults.
-Christ on a cracker!- Klaus screams looking back-. Pogo?
-My apologies, Master Klaus- he looks at him recriminating-. I have a query for you.
-Oh?
-Items from your father's office have gone missing. In particular, an ornate box with a pearl inlay.
(Y/N) turns to see Klaus with a disappointed look as he turns to see the empty chair.
-Oh, really? You don't say.
-Any idea where it went?
-No, no, no... No idea- then he whispers-. Drop-dead. Would you shut up!?
-Excuse me?- Pogo is impressed at his words.
-Pogo, I didn't mean you, I just... I...- He sits next to (Y/N)-. You know, there's been a lot of stuff I've been dealing with. Just a lot of memories coming up. All those good times. Well, not so many good times as really awful, terrible, depressing times.
-The contents of that box are priceless. Were they to find their way back to the office, whoever took it would be absolved of any blame or consequences.
-Oh, well, lucky bastard.
-Indeed.
Pogo leaves the room and (Y/N) sights, standing up to pick up the mess her friend had made.
-Where's the box, Klaus?
-At the pawnshop.
-The one next to the Chinese restaurant?
-Yeah.
-Okay- she throws at him his pants-. Get dressed, we're going to get it back before I go to work.
-You have a job?- he frowns.
-At the flower shop, downtown.
-Oh, nice- she wants to be mad at him, but can't-. I don't have money, though.
-I'll pay for it, but you ain't going alone anywhere with my money.
-Fair enough.
An hour later, the pair parks in front of the pawnshop.
-Okay, here's the money. You get in, buy the box and then come back to the car and give it to me. Get it?
-Yes, boss!- she smiles at him.
Klaus gets off the car and does what she told him.
-Great! Now you just gotta go back to the house, put the things inside, and give it back to Pogo.
-There's a problem with that.
-What?
-I don't have what was inside.
-What?- she almost screams-. Where did you leave them?
-At the dumpster behind the Academy.
-You're unbelievable- she starts the car-. Okay, no problem. We're going to the flower shop, I'll ask the day off and then we'll go to the dumpster.
It was very hard to convince Ren, the owner of the shop, to give her the day, but in the end, she managed to convince him after mentioning it was to spend time with Klaus.
-Oh, god... He came?- (Y/N) nod, excited-. Jesus girl, I can't you believe you actually found him. Will you finally stop talking about him every three minutes?
-I don't do that!- she blushes.
-All of our customers know who he is!- Ren looks through the windows, at her car-. Is that him?
-Yeah.
-He's cuter in person- he tries to get a better look at him.
-I know. So... Can I have the day off?
-Just this one time, Voss- she gives little jumps of happiness-. And I want all the details later, alright?
-Okay, bye!
The next hour, Klaus and (Y/N) look through the trash, trying to find whatever Klaus thew away. But there was nothing, he didn't even remember what the box had.
-What do you plan on doing now?- she asked as they entered the mansion.
-Well, nothing, of course.
-You're a mess, Klaus.
-I...
-Hey! I was looking for you!- Five interrupts them-. Klaus, I need your help.
-Why?
-I need you to pose as my dad so I can get some information. Put something professional on, we're leaving in half an hour.
-Oh, sure, boss... Will I get something in exchange?
-$10
-$20
-Okay- Five's irritated.
Klaus climbs the stairs and (Y/N) looks at Five with a raised eyebrow.
-Which information?
-It's none of your business.
-Oh, but maybe I can help, you know?- Five ignores her and starts climbing the stairs-. I can convince a person to give you their life saving in the blink of an eye!
-You have powers?
-Yeah.
The kid stands in the middle of the stairway, examining her.
-That'll work better than Klaus, ok. $20 for your services.
-Oh, no, thanks. I don't want money- she stands in front of him-. I'm just doing it so Klaus doesn't get money for drugs.
-Ok. You heard me, wear something formal, you have 30 minutes.
-I'll ask Grace for one of her dresses.
They walk to Klaus's room, where he is buttoning up a rather extravagant blazer.
-Klaus, forget it. I'll take your girlfriend instead.
-I'm not...
-Why?- he pouts.
-Well, first of all, you're wearing clown clothes.
-What? This is my nicest outfit- he speaks softly, offended-. Wait! I got an idea. You know what's better than a mom? A mom and a dad! We can pose as a married couple with a sweet teenage kid.
-Oh, God- Five looks at (Y/N), who got lost at the mention of married-. Yeah, fine, whatever. But I'll just give you $10... And we'll raid the old man's closet.
-As long as I get paid- (Y/N) looks at Five concerned but he blinks and eye at her.
-When the job is done!

Moving on. (2/3)
Pairing: Kylo x Reader, Poe x Reader.
Word Count: 2k.
Warnings: An abusive relationship so if its a trigger for you consider not reading, angst and maybe some tears.
PRIOR CHAPTER.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is, Kylo Ren is the love of your life. And you know you are his, but it wouldn’t work.
You tried all you could do be with him, you stood when the work hours became bigger, when he started to get frustrated, when he forgot important dates as your birthday or your anniversary.
But the worse thing was when he got mad and yelled. He never laid a finger on you, but had days he was so mad that you thought he would.
With Poe was completely different, when things got tough in his life, he didn’t push you away as Kylo, no, he pulled you closer.
When problems came Poe would sit down and fix the problem trying to find a solution, which was amazing because that is how couples should be.
You loved Kylo too much, so much that you forgot to love yourself.
Kylo yelled? ’He is tired, things are tough at work.’
Kylo got home at 02 AM after ignoring all your worried calls? ’He needs space to think.’
Kylo stopped caring if you were happy or stopped asking about your day and life’s problems? ’He has too much on his mind.’
Kylo literally traveled when you were sick in bed? ‘He has to, his uncle needs him.’
Kylo sat to eat the dinner you cooked and only ate two forks of it before throwing in the trash? 'Well, maybe he ate something a work.'
The relationship reached that point. But you saw it wasn’t his job that was destroying your relationship, it was him.
Once Rey was making a party to celebrate her anniversary with Finn and since Kylo was going to be late anyways you went there and had fun with your friends Finn, Carissian and Poe aside Rey’s other guests.
It was at a club and even though your heart was sad because of Kylo ignoring you, you placed a smile and made sure to enjoy your night.
You were dancing with Carissian when he excused to grab a drink and left you alone, ignoring it you just kept dancing and having fun.
Someone touched your arm and started to dance with you, the guy asked if he could join and you found the fact that he asked cute and knowing he was Finn’s friend he was probably nice, and it wasn't sexual moves, the guy weren't even touching you.
But yet the next thing you saw was the man being pulled back and being punched by Kylo. You widened your eyes and went to help the man on the floor. He was trying to understand what happened, it was too fast. You looked at Kylo mad at the stupidity act. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Kylo scoffed. “With me?! I wasn’t the one grinding my body against someone else, who isn’t your boyfriend by the way.”
You hated to fight in public, and of course the DJ had to stop the music.
“Not here.” You said but Kylo was with a mocked smile on his face.
“I decided to go home earlier to spend a fucking time with my girlfriend but what do I find? A piece of paper. Just to find you here grinding into that fucker!” He yelled, tears prickling in your eyes.
Poe came running and tried to calm Kylo down only to be pushed away, Kylo looked you up and down before he scoffed, he started to yell again but when the security came he left.
You stood there completely ashamed of the situation, eyes on you made you feel like you were dirty. Finn and Rey came running to calm you but you needed to breathe.
And the only thing you could worry about was: Kylo.
Leaving the place you searched for him, he wasn’t there, worry grew on you.
Thoughts about him driving mad and what would that would lead to. At that moment you assumed how bad he was making you. He went to meet you at the party and punched a man that was only being nice to you, yelled at you in public and destroyed your night, well, your friend's night.
You couldn’t go back to his apartment, but you hadn’t another place to go.
Taking deep breaths and cleaning your soaked face you walked inside and asked Rey if you could stay at her house. She answered with an ‘of course’ and you asked for the keys, she tried to go with you but you declined and said she had to celebrate her anniversary with Finn.
To resume what happened that night was: tears. You cried to sleep thinking about how much you loved Kylo and how things got into that.
The day that followed you woke up with your eyes terrible swell and a terrible headache due to the incessant crying.
You had to go to work but your clothes were at home which you shared with Kylo and you couldn’t see him yet. You needed space.
But you couldn't skip work. It was 08 in the morning and you waited til 10 to go back fully knowing Kylo had a meeting with some Chinese associates that he wouldn’t miss.
Even if the evil thoughts made you wonder if he had found some girl to put his frustrations on, or how maybe he was trying to end things, that is why men start to act so stupidly, right? You had to go back.
Finn asked if you wanted him to drive you but you declined and thanked them for the abode.
You grabbed an Uber and seeing the look the driver gave you duo the terribly broken appearance you ignored and was happy that the app allowed to give the adress before, in that way you hadn’t to talk besides the good morning.
At your house... well... Kylo’s, you got surprised when you saw him sat on the couch. Your breath hitched and you tried to run to the bedroom to grab your things. “Y/N.” He called and you shook your head. “We need to talk!”
Grabbing your clothes and entering the bathroom locking the door you took a deep breath. “Not now Kylo.”
You could hear him taking deep breaths, trying to control his feelings. “Please.”
He begged silently and you knew how hard that was, but you couldn’t magically forgive him.
He needed to do more than that.
After your shower and placing makeup to cover your drained-of-life face you left the place only to see Kylo sat on the floor waiting for you. “Listen I’m sorry-”
You rushed through the bedroom to grab your purse and tried your best to ignore him. “Kylo I’m late.”
His steps paused. “You will walk away?”
"I need to be there today-”
Before you could finish he started to walk around rubbing his face. “I lost the chance of my career and you WILL WALL AWAY?!” You flinched at his loud tone of voice, there he was.
You looked up at him with a punch on your heart, he was sorry because he lost the meeting, not because you were being destroyed day by day. “Kylo I love you, but you have no idea how much you're hurting me right now. Goodbye.”
You walked out before he could say something else.
That day at work was stupid, you couldn't focus and you even thought of going to a hotel after, you didn't want to see him and didn't want to be a burden to any of your friends.
A part of you, a really big one, wanted to suck up and go back to Kylo ready to fix things because you loved him too much.
Another one wanted to find a hotel and stay a few days alone to put your thoughts in order.
And the last one was yelling for you to look up for yourself, Kylo was never the prince charming but at least you were sure he loved you, but you weren't sure anymore. And the way he has been treating you lately wasn't acceptable.
                  …
Poe was… a friend. You met him because of Finn. Once you hung out at the Finalizer that was a bar that belonged to your friend Phasma, and Poe was there so you two had a lovely conversation.
Kylo came back from his travel to Japan and texted you asking where you were, you told him and a few minutes later he appeared ready to take you home. When he did so, you smiled and kissed him, glad to see him again after a week far, but Kylo stared at Poe for a few seconds before placing his hand on your lower back and taking you home.
In the car you asked what was that, it couldn’t be pure jealousy. Kylo explained that Poe used to be his friend, but Kylo always felt aside because Leia liked the young pilot too much.
Leia worked in the council and was important in the city government, Poe was a pilot there and they were friends despising the age difference, even Han liked Poe.
When Kylo told you that you understood, of course Kylo’s parents didn’t love Poe more than their own son, that was Kylo’s mind playing tricks.
But you didn't treat Poe differently because of that, whenever you saw him with your friends in common he was a great company.
And when you and Kylo broke up you locked yourself from the world for a few weeks, it was terrible.
You lost weight, your hair and nails grow weak, you couldn’t stop crying, you couldn't eat without being nauseated.
Gladly you had to go back to work so you put your mind at place and decided you couldn’t allow Kylo to still make you feel bad even after you two weren’t together anymore. Your phone was filled with pictures of him and you, filled with texts, photos of the flowers he used to bring home, of the trips you two made, the dinners he took you to because he wanted to show you off, the girl that was too good and too kind for Kylo Ren.
You deleted it all, it was an impulse and you knew you would regret later, one stupid part of you thought that he would change, he would apologize and you would forget that ‘ugly phase’ of your relationship. After all, he was the love of your life.
But it didn’t happen.
You asked for an advance salary because you needed to rent a apartment, they did, happily. And you had some extra money saved in the bank which helped.
A few friends offered you their house, like Phasma and Rey, but you needed your own space.
Needed to put your life back in order.
And when you went to the bank you saw some extra money, as a nice person you called the agency and asked what was it, seeing the place it came from you grunted. Skywalker Enterprises.
When you started to date Kylo he always tried to pay for everything, even before he received a good salary, before you two lived in a fucking penthouse.
It was nice of him but you hated to feel like you were taking advantage of him in some way, hated to feel useless. So you told him you would pay for something, the power light and water was paid by the company so you said you would pay for the food. In Kylo’s heart, he would pay everything for you, you could quit your job and stay at home being pretty for him but you didn’t want to lose your independence.
You knew he wouldn't be the one to send you the money, he was too proud, and he wanted you back home. It wouldn't make sense for him to send you money to rent a new place.
So you called Luke instead. He was amazing and treated you like a daughter rather than 'niece-in-law’, he called you for a lunch and you made sure Kylo wouldn’t be there, Luke was clever and you didn’t want some surprise. Luke promised it would only be you two so you agreed to go.
He said how sorry he was and how much he would miss to have you around, you nodded sadly and you asked him to retrieve the money, he didn’t and explained that Kylo was worried where you would live since you had no place to go.
You told Luke you didn’t need the money, and you found a great apartment already, Luke didn’t trust you and said he wouldn’t take the money back. “Then it will stay there.” You said.
“Then it will.” Luke answered and ate his lunch with a smile.
Smiling back at him you shook your head. “You know, you and Leia are so stubborn, I guess that is why Kylo is too.” You giggled but your smile faded slowly at the thought.
With the passing of days, you found a new apartment, since your things were on Kylo's you sent Rey and Finn to grab them, apparently something happened between Rey and Kylo since she was extra mad at him.
Your friends took your stuff and you slowly decorated the new apartment with your taste. Of course wasn’t as spacious nor prettiest as Kylo’s, but it was yours.
It was very hard to get used to wake up alone. To sometimes smile seeing something and looking around your place unconsciously searching for him.
But you had too.
...
At Phasma’s pub, you smiled when you saw Poe there, he was carrying a guitar and he politely talked with you, you apologized for the prior occasion you two saw each other, about Kylo’s behavior in the club.
Poe knew Kylo’s temper and told you that you had nothing to be ashamed of.
Later that day you watched Poe singing, you didn’t know he did so and looked at Phasma perplexed by his sweet voice. “I know, he is a catch.” She winked and you rolled your eyes, a small smirk placed on your face, you definitely weren’t ready to move on.
And use someone as nice as Poe to distract your mind wasn’t the right thing.
For the first day in a long time you had a good time, the drinks Phasma prepared and Poe’s sweet voice soothed you and made you feel relaxed, the heaviness on your shoulders wasn’t so onerous.
That day Poe walked you home, you were a bit dizzy and he didn’t want you walking alone in the late hours.
“You are so talented! I know you are the best pilot, but a singer? You are the whole package.” You shamelessly said, the alcohol on your system didn’t hold any thought back.
“Thank you, I guess.” He blushed and linking your arm on his, you were almost stumbling in the streets.
You took a deep breath and pouted. “You were Kylo’s best friend, what happened? I mean I know what happened," You giggled. "Kylo is possessive, and since Leia and Han love you he was worried and insecure, probably.”
Poe didn’t want to talk about Kylo. He knew breakups are tough and he couldn’t make a move, he was just being a gentleman accompanying you home, but the fact that you thought he was 'a catch’ was making things more difficult.
It wasn’t Poe fault that the first time he saw you he got stuck.
It was on a barbecue at Finn’s old house, he was over and you arrived with Rey holding a tray of muffins. Poe helped you with the tray and felt his heart clinging on a good way when you smiled.
Finn saw the look. “Nu uh! Don’t even try, she has a boyfriend;”
Poe smile faded but his eyes were still staring at your across the room talking politely with the other guests. “Yeah, I thought so, who is the lucky guy? Or girl? Do I know?” He asked sipping his beer.
“Actually you won’t believe how small that world is.” Finn said and twisted the meat an chicken making sure he wouldn’t burn the food, he wanted to impress Rey after all. “Remember your best friend? Kylo Ren?” Finn pointed the spatula at your direction. “Well, Y/N is his girlfriend.”
Poe widened his eyes and coughed when the beer hit the wrong place. He looked at his best friend trying to find any hint of jokiness. “You are lying.”
"Oh, trust me. I wish I was. Y/N is Rey’s friend but also is mine, I love her. And we used to hang out all the time, but after Kylo? Its like he locks her in his castle.”
"Why? I mean, she doesn’t look the type that would date someone for money.”
Poe was puzzled, Kylo wasn’t the healthiest person to have a relationship with, why would you be willing to date an arrogant man? “Trust me, she is not, she really really loves him. How? I don’t know.” Finn hated Kylo, he worked with Han and Chewie -Han’s best friend, Chewbacca was his nickname and Finn never dared to ask his real name- and every time he saw Kylo the man was extremely arrogant.
Poe’s face went fully sad and Finn tried to cheer him up. “Ey, who knows someday? I mean, sometimes love ends, and who knows you and Y/N gets together? It would be great, we could hang out as couples.”
“Who knows.” Poe answered but didn’t hold many hopes.
That was the first time Poe saw you, he was amazed at how nice you were and wondered how Kylo Ren managed to win such a nice girl.
...
It wasn’t to turn in relationship between the two of you, it just happened.
After getting over Kylo, which took eleven months, Rey set a few dates, seventy percent of them you called before giving some stupid excuse, but after more three months alone you needed some action, you needed to be touched and allow yourself to forget Kylo.
But men were so boring, even the one that has traveled the whole world and spoke four different languages, he wasn’t…
(…) he wasn’t Kylo.
Each one was boring but Rey and Finn took you in and said how much they missed having you around, Poe was nice and kind… and after 9 months you tried to move on, Poe cared enough that he respected your time, respected your heart and when you finally allowed to be loved and touched by him he knew he couldn’t mess this up.
Dating Poe was different, was calmer, his work hours were smaller and you would always be on Phasma’s pub on Fridays hearing him sing.
Your days were brighter and you laughed more.
In one exclusively Friday helping Phasma delivering the drinks you wondered about one Friday you cried to sleep in Phasma's house after a fight with Kylo.
It was after a stressful day at work all you wanted was to take a relaxing bath with Kylo and sleep for 2 weeks straight.
But when you stepped inside the place it was empty.
Of fucking course it was.
Frustrated tears left your orbs at every step you gave, Kylo doesn’t love you anymore, you knew that. It wasn’t a phase, and as more you ignored it, the more you would get hurt.
After a hot shower and washing your hair trying to help you in some way, you walked to your shared room.
You sat on the edge of the bed and you looked at the photo it had of you and Kylo when Luke called you to Christmas, the night you met Leia and Han. Kylo had a lovely family, even if he didn’t believe so.
You let a frustrated sigh and touched your heart, this was bad. Deciding to break your heart, even more, you grabbed his notebook to see the photos.
The albums saved of each year you two spent together.
But when you opened you saw his e-mails and messages open. You didn’t want to intrude but well… you did.
A woman’s name was in the recent ones, she had sent heart emojis to his number, so these messages were also on his phone.
Widening your eyes you opened and read the messages trying to find a context, maybe her dog died and Kylo sent his condolences.... "Please God let it be her dog being dead."
You scrolled up and saw the messages:
'The dinner yesterday was amazing.'
Reading over and over you tried to find a reason, maybe she was a partner of Luke and Kylo made some agreement. But yesterday was the day you stood awake till 2 AM waiting for him, didn't matter if you were dead tired, and when he got home he ignored your worried state saying he worked til late with Hux.
Reading and reading you saw how easy Kylo was answering. He was having an affair.
It hadn’t anything that implied sex but if he was having dinner with that woman and lied to you. It was pretty damn obvious.
On his e-mails, the big part was with sketches of the works and new deals.
But another woman was thanking him for helping her with a new job, thanking him for giving her a job.
But he don't hire people, Hux does that and Kylo never took part saying he hated all the bureaucracy that followed.
The door opened and you heard keys being thrown at the plate near the door.
When Kylo entered the bedroom he just looked at you, no “good night” nor “hello”.
Looking at him taking his suit off you wondered about the messages. “Who is Emily?”
Stopping his steps he shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know.”
Scoffing you bit your lower lip. If it was nothing he would at least tell you who she was. “Then why you had dinner with her yesterday?”
Realizing it was his computer on your lap and not yours his face grow angry. “So you meddle in my stuff now?”
"Don’t throw the guilt on me. Who the fuck is Emily, Kylo?”
“She is an associate, you don’t need to bitch about it.” Widening your eyes at his words you got on your feet leaving the notebook open above the bed. It took a lot of control to not smash it at the window!
“Bitch about it? Fuck you!”
He grabbed his notebook and closed the tap throwing in the nightstand. “Since when you mess with my stuff?” He yelled making you flinch.
“You know what? Sorry if I missed my fucking boyfriend and wanted to see some photos because all we have now is this: memories! SORRY IF YOU GOT MAD THAT I DISCOVERED HOUR AFFAIR WITH THAT WHORE!”
"DON'T CALL HER THAT!”
Your heart was hammering and you felt like you would have a heart attack, you scoffed and rubbed your eyes trying to clean the tears. You walked a few steps away from him, your hands were literally trembling with nerves. “So you are seeing someone else?”
“You act like I can’t have a fucking friend, but hang out all the time with Finn you do.”
“Finn is Rey’s boyfriend! Matter fact why I would a cheat on you? Or what? Will you say that I and Rey have an affair too? Or maybe the baker downstairs? Or your uncle? How about Han himself?”
Kylo rolled his eyes and scratched his hair tiredly. “That is why we don’t talk anymore! You are impossible to deal with!” Seeing how his expression was annoyed and not sad you knew you had to leave.
“I can’t do this.” Walking to the expansive closet you started to grab your clothes.
"SO WHAT, YOU WILL LEAVE?" He yelled and followed you, Kylo saw the bag on your hand and how you were throwing your clothes inside of it. “Stop it.” You didn’t and searched your other personal belongings. “I SAID STOP IT!”
He ordered but you didn’t obey you only closed the bag and walked out of his reach.
Kylo pulled the bag strap strongly and it made you lose your balance and fell to the floor. The impact hurt your butt but your tears weren’t because of it.
Kylo looked at the scene and bit his lower lip, it wasn’t supposed to be like that, extending his hand to your reach you quickly slapped it away.
You got on your feet and grabbed your phone, wallet not looking back at him before you left the place.
When you closed the door you slid down and sat on the floor placing your hand over your mouth trying to muffle your sobs. The next thing you heard was Kylo’s screams and things being thrown away breaking on the walls.
But what saddened you the most was that he didn't even tried to reach you.
Emily was an associate, and Kylo wasn’t having an affair, he had kissed her a few times but didn't have sex. He never touched her in that way when you found the messages in his notebook and you two fought because of it.
But after the day he yelled at you in the club he went to her house, when she opened the door Kylo didn’t lost time before attacking her. She gladly threw herself at him and allowed Kylo to take all of his frustrations on her.
He left quickly after and head home regretting what he did.
On the day after when he didn’t show up at work and stood at home waiting for you, he had time to think about everything, regret and remorse were eating him alive. Ren wasn’t good at describing what he felt, but he wanted to at least speak with you. But when you appeared and ignored him and only grabbed your things to go to work he got mad, he lost a day of work, a day that had a important meeting and you just walked away.
Later that day he sat down and wrote all that he felt on a message, he apologized, told you he loved you with the same intensity as he always did etc, etc, et cetera.
And as a fool in love, the words hit you and you forgave him, so you tried again… but then one week later that you two were trying to fix things he saw the Emily girl in the groceries, Kylo was in the yogurt aisle and you on the other side grabbing some other items when she called him. “I missed you last week, waking up and you weren’t there. I mean how wild you were I at least expected for some breakfast, or morning sex to be what? The fourth round?” She shamelessly flirted and Kylo's eyes searched for you, when he found you were leaving the cart in the middle of the market storming out of the place.
Of course they had sex, you were stupid to believe him.
Kylo apologized but just the idea of him touching someone else wounded you deeply. It was the very last drop, you had to break up the toxic relationship before it broke you.
But when you started to leave and he didn’t allow, you saw him with other eyes. He was fuming, mad at himself and how "easily" you would leave him.
Kylo placed both hands near your head against the wall cornering you between his arms. He apologized repeatedly and went to kiss you but you dodged, you didn’t want to kiss the lips of a traitor, and when you dodged his eyes went black and all he saw was red.
He yelled and punched the wall near your head, it was so so near that you felt the air it made. You were scared of him, scared and that wasn’t something a relationship should have.
When you finally left, Kylo knew you wouldn’t be back.
Blinking the small tears that formed you heard Phasma calling you. Setting a smile and enjoying the presence of your friends and Poe -calling him boyfriend was still weird- you had a great night and was happy you were doing your best to move on.
Even if it was the hardest thing you ever had to do.
                              …

‘Sui Mei Ren’, one of the four roses I obtained in my search for plants hybridized outside of the U.S. or Europe. The others are Naga Belle (India), Yametsu-Hime (Japan) and Lorraine Lee (Australia), but ‘Sui Mei Ren’ is the most interesting by far. It is one of several roses collected from the  Huai’an Rose Garden in Huai’an, Jiangsu Province, China by Dr. Yoshihiro Ueda of Japan.
Per staff at the garden, the rose dates back to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE). This has caused controversy amongst Western rosarians, some of whom feel it’s too modern looking for that, but certainly it doesn’t fit neatly into any of their existing classes. Age itself isn’t a problem; you can still grow ‘Alba Semi-Plena’ and its double-flowered sport ‘Alba Maxima’ after all, and the former is reported to be the white rose used by the House of York in the 15th century CE, symbolically immortalized by the Wars of the Roses. Rosa x damascena, the Damask rose, has been cultivated continuously since ancient times around the Black Sea and Mediterranean. If you have ever had naturally flavored or scented rose water, candy or oils, it was probably derived from Damask roses. (The name Damask itself derives from Damascus, where Western Europeans first encountered it during the Crusades. The current conflict in Syria has had a profound impact on the cultivation of this ancient crop.) Humans have been growing roses as long as we’ve known them, whether pure species, wild hybrids, or carefully bred fluffy show ponies that must be coddled every day of their existence. We love them.
Regarding this plant specifically, I suspect the problem tends to be the irritating lack of direct communication between Western enthusiasts and Asian growers and gardeners. (This is rather neatly illustrated by the number of begonias purchased at local markets and proudly introduced to Western markets with the designation “unknown”.) Which is a pity; there’s obviously a huge gap in our knowledge of Chinese roses, whether or not this one is as old as alleged, and we’re not making the human connections necessary to fill it.
Anyway, my review: The earliest buds balled in the wet weather. A break in the rain allowed this bloom to open perfectly flat, showing an intriguing mix of pink and cream petals. Foliage is attractive and has had no serious disease issues yet. Very good spider platform too, apparently. Can’t wait for more.

So yesterday I went to play at the old habitat* and tried out DW5 Empires again. (* personal code word to refer to Res' family house)
Now behold the DW5 version of my Chinese OCs! ...Not all of them, though, and since I haven't unlocked all the outfits, some (or all) of them don't look as originally intended. Good thing I didn't save them, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Li Zhen here looks really cute despite her hair not looking the same, but hey, at least she's still got her signature twin buns. The "Innocent" voice type actually sounds either very cutesy-shy or childish, but it fits her more than the more fiery "Spirited" type, so I just went along with that. Another mistake I made here is that the flowers on her head were supposed to be red.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lin Shen, my Mo Dao Zu Shi OC. I got really confused about her weapon since in the story she's in, she mainly uses magic and wields a book (spell tome?) that she writes on and recites her magic from. So I just went with Zhang Liao's pole blade, and maybe she'll get this weapon too in her own story. Her voice type is "Relaxed", it sounds pretty deep although its icon has Zhenji's silhouette (who has a sultry voice instead of deep).
Speaking of Lin Shen, I also made her in DW5XL for Xtreme Mode (because who would be her mentor in Destiny Mode?). I made sure she never recruited anyone as ally due to her canon nature as a lone wolf. That had a bad effect of her being easily offed because there's nobody to protect her. Seems I need to show some mercy to her...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, Yi Bao. I don't remember if there's any armour-ish outfit for female edits; she looks a bit weird in this one, as opposed to her full-armoured appearance in SoulCalibur. Here she looks more like a wanderer than soldier. I also had problems with whose sword moveset she should use, and decided on Sun Quan's although it looks very unfitting to her; she should've had Zhou Yu's moveset instead, it has a better stance. Like Lin Shen, her voice type is "Relaxed".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zhang Xia (aka Yi Bao's maid). It's not the correct outfit and hairstyle for her, but at least she has the correct weapon : Diaochan's dual mace. I'll remake her when I unlock the other outfit because honestly, she doesn't look good in this one. I went with "Spirited" for her voice type since despite her scaredy-cat nature, her original voice indicates a lot of enthusiasm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last one is Yi Jiu, my Ravages of Time OC. Like I said before, I haven't unlocked the other outfits yet, so here she looks extremely different from what I intend her to be. I have no qualms about her hairstyle, but her face looks not as feminine; it looks pretty sinister while she actually sports a rather innocent, but whimsical look on her face. I went with Jiang Wei's trident spear for her weapon because so far, I don't have any spear-wielding girl, right? (Aoyama Shun doesn't count) And like Zhang Xia, her voice type is "Spirited"; it's just pitch perfect as she is a cheerful person.
I want to make the other OCs, but their weapons aren't listed here. Even Li Ren has to use a sword instead because Zhou Yu isn't using a staff before DW6. So here's a list of my other DW characters and their possible weapon movesets (or weapon changes for most) :
Zhen Pan - spear (Zhao Yun/Jiang Wei); alternatively, pike (Lü Meng) or pole blade (Guan Yu/Zhang Liao). Ma Chao and Lü Bu's movesets are too fiery for his quiet nature.
Zhen Yin/Manyue - feather fan (Zhuge Liang/Sima Yi), originally fan sword. Both are very fitting for her, considering she is the tactician of her own family. Her pranks could also count as strategy practice from another perspective... what a jerk-ass truth.
Mai Xi - scythe (Yueying), originally sickle. Simply because there's no sickle moveset and she is Li Zhen's actual successor as the plant hunter.
Mai Yong - fork and shield (Xingcai), originally dual shields. There is nobody in DW history who wields a pair of large shields, so Xingcai's weapon here is the closest Mai Yong can have.
Mai Xun - sword (Gan Ning), originally a single hooksword. The only hooksword moveset is Yue Jin's in DW8, and it's dual wield. Gan Ning's sword is the closest for Mai Xun's speedy moveset.
That's all for now. My other Chinese OCs have impossible weapons (Zhao Xiang tops this as her weapon is her smile of all possible things), so I can't include them here (yet).

20 Popular Feng Shui items for good luck to display at home
20 Popular Feng Shui items for good luck to display at home
Below are the 20 of the most popular feng shui items to display for good luck in wealth, career, relationship, and health. What are the meanings behind the objects and how to display them at home?
Before placing any good luck feng shui items, it is a good idea to do a house cleaning and decluttering. Clear out anything that is outdated or no longer fits your current life.
After that, we can look at our room setups and the layout of the furniture. Behind all the complicated and sometimes confusing theories, there are basic rules you can apply for each space. Here are some common feng shui rules by rooms from our previous posts.
Bedroom feng shui
Living room feng shui
Kitchen feng shui
Restroom feng shui
Office feng shui
Entrance feng shui
Watch the video for the 20 popular feng shui lucky items
20 good luck feng shui items to attract good luck and prosperity
Peony
The peony flowers used to belong to the Chinese royal family only, and not everyone can have access to these beautiful flowers. So the peony is associated with high social status, good fortune, and beauty. It is very common to see a Chinese ink painting of the peony flowers in a living room or family room. The flowers tend to be very large and colorful. They can bring festive energy and prosperity.
2. The Koi fish
The Koi is a very popular feng shui lucky symbol. The Koi fish can jump high sometimes, and that can be associated with leveling up and advance your career or social status. No matter what your current situation or background is, you have the chance to jump to the next level.
One typical theme is the “9 Koi fishes” painting. It is very auspicious because “9” is the most “Yang” number. The Koi painting is also very popular to be displayed in a living room or an office.
3. Paintings of water and mountain
This is another popular feng shui good luck item usually displayed in the living room or office. First, the landscape painting can create a beautiful view. It is a symbol of bright future. The water is a symbol of wealth in Chinese feng shui, so it is very auspicious to display waterfall or flowing water to attract wealth luck.
Be careful about the flowing direction of the water when hanging the painting on a wall. Avoid having the water flowing out of the door or window. It is better to position the painting so the water flow into the house.
4. Lucky bamboo
Lucky bamboo is very similar to the bamboo outdoors. It is one of the “4 gentlemen” plants in Chinese culture. That includes plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. They are usually depicted together in Chinese ink paintings, symbolizing people of high virtues and moral standards.
Bamboo is usually related to scholars and literary arts. In feng shui, the lucky bamboo is often used to enhance intelligence and exam luck.
5. Jade plant
Plants with thick and broad leaves are considered good luck in Chinese feng shui. That includes most succulents. The needle-leaf plant such as cactus are more for countering negative energy. Jade plant or other lush, green plants can bring in nature’s energy and clean the air quality.
The jade plant is often called Money Plant. You can display this plant in the living room, office, or other public areas to enhance money luck.
6. Fish tank
Since water is a symbol of wealth in feng shui, a fish tank with swimming fishes in the right location can bring wealth luck.
Fish tanks can slow down the energy so the Qi can stay longer. So, they are usually set in the money corner or lucky areas to activate money luck.
It is important to keep the fish tank clean and well-maintained for the best energy.
7. Water fountain
A water fountain is similar to the fish tank. The flowing water can activate wealth luck. It also creates soothing sound, and brings in vibration from Nature.
A water fountain is easier to maintain than a fish tank. You can also combine different elements such as crystals, candles, or coins. It can be part of your spiritual altar for mediation.
8. Coins and the 5-emperor coins
The 5 or 6 emperor’s coins are popular for raising the Qi of the earth or space. These are from the 5 or 6 most prosperous dynasties in Chinese history. So, they represent good energy and general prosperity. When you need an extra boost of energy, those coins are usually recommended.
Even though the real antique coins are powerful, most coins we can find are reproductions. It is hard to find authentic coins nowadays, and it is ok to use the mass-produced coins for symbolic meanings. You can also use the real coins you use every day. They also have the power of enhancing the wealth luck.
9. Money frog or money toad
The money toad or the 3-legged money frog is believed to bring you money and good fortune. You can display the money frog in the living room or near entrance, with his head facing outdoor (door or window). So the money frog can go out and accumulate wealth for you.
The money frog is usually displayed in a money corner or with other money enhancers for attracting wealth luck.
10. Pi Xiu (Pi Yao)
Pi Xiu is an auspicious feng shui animal that can bring protection from negative energy or spirit. It can also bring wealth luck.
Pi Xiu is also effective in reducing the negative effect of the Tai Sui (the yearly god). For example, 2021 is the year of the Ox, the Ox animal sign can display a Pi Xiu in the Tai Sui direction (Northeast) or carry an image or key chain of Pi Xiu during this year.
11. Qi Lin (Chi Lin)
Oi Lin (or Chi Lin) is another popular feng shui animal that can bring protection and general good luck. It is associated with career success, fame, and helpful people (Gui Ren).
If you like to attract helpful people (or mentor) and keep away from negative friends, Qi Lin is the right symbol to display in an office. For general prosperity and protection, you can display Qi Lin in a living room or other public areas of the house.

Both dragon turtle and dragon house are in the dragon family. The dragon turtle is half turtle and half dragon, and turtle is related to health and long life. So the dragon turtle also has the meaning of long life and good health.
The dragon horse is half horse and half dragon. Like the Qi Lin above, the dragon horse is associated with helpful people and career success.

Conversation
The Nutcracker: A RWBY Ballet AU.
Ruby: A prodigy dancer with no formal ballet training, slightly dorky and clumsy, but a LOT of grace and talent when she really tries. Hopes to live up to the reputation of her mother, has big shoes to fill. Lands the roll of the Dewdrop Fairy, dances the Waltz of the Flowers. Tries to impress those skeptical of her, especially Weiss, whom she thinks is very pretty.
Weiss: Raised from birth in the art of ballet, and it shows. Her family puts a lot of pressure on her to land starring role of Clara in the Nutcracker, instead receives the part of the Snow Queen in the Waltz of the Snowflakes. Is very judgmental of Ruby for gaining a solo dance role despite her childish demeanor, but still finds her somehow appealing.
Blake: Artful and graceful ballerina, not incredibly talkative. Makes friends with Ruby, Weiss, and Yang though. No one is really sure where or even if she's been formally trained. Plays a snowflake alongside Weiss. Professes a deep adoration for Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS. Might enjoy tea in more ways than one.
Yang: Ruby's older sister, a highly energetic, flirtatious, and not entirely subtle dancer who can still show talent and poise on stage. Slightly temperamental when provoked. Dances in the Chinese Tea dance. Has eyes for a certain secretive snowflake.
Jaune: Comes from a long line of male ballet dancers, most of whom have been the titular Nutcracker Prince. Not a very good dancer, but gosh if he doesn't try. Totally lied about his past performing experience to get the role of the Nutcracker, but the theatre director saw potential and let him stay. Is trained after hours by Pyrrha. Ends up doing great.
Pyrrha: World renowned ballerina, very lonely in person. Much like canon Pyrrha, it's a lonely life at the top of the world. She of course gets the part of Clara, and does phenomenally at it. Falls for her co-star Jaune, who confides in her about his lack of talent and asks her to help him learn how to dance so he won't ruin the show. She does, and shares her own tale of how isolating it is to be seen as an untouchable icon of beauty and grace, with no one really wanting to be her friend for who she is underneath the costumes. No one except him. They of course get together, because you spend enough time ballet dancing with someone, you start to catch feelings. Not even Jaune is that stupid. Also makes friends with Nora and Ren.
Nora: An energetic little lady, and a surprisingly skillful ballerina. Plays the Sugar Plum Fairy, because it makes her Queen of the land, and does the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy VERY well. Is head over heels for her 'cavalier' Ren.
Lie Ren: Plays the Sugar Plum Fairy's Cavalier with considerable skill. Has known Nora all their lives, and has danced with her enough times to know he loves her. A quiet guy in general, but he gets along with his 'queen', and is friends with Jaune and Pyrrha.
Theatre Director Ozpin: Once a well known dancer, known for playing the Nutcracker in his day, which despite his appearance really wasn't so long ago. Now runs the Beacon Theatre Production Company out of the Vale Opera House. A bit eccentric and mysterious.
Assistant Director Goodwitch: Former Clara to Ozpin's Nutcracker, she has stuck by him for most of their lives and now helps him run the Beacon. Much more strict and orderly than her boss, but also kind and maternal at times. Might have formerly been in Wicked.
Summer Rose: Was a celebrated ballerina famous for playing the Sugar Plum Fairy. Sadly deceased.
Taiyang Xiao Long: Also a former performer, met Summer during her time as the SP Fairy. He was Mother Ginger.
Raven Branwen: Another former performer, she was a Chinese tea dancer back in the day. Then she became disillusioned with performing and left. Actually had Yang with Tai, was his first wife. Left Yang in his care when she went off on her own.
Qrow Branwen: Back when he wasn't a full-blown alcoholic, played Herr Drosselmeyer. To this day, no one know how he managed to look so much like an owl without makeup. Helped raise Ruby and Yang, and assists running the theatre co. as a favor to Ozpin.

BOOK REVIEW: ESCAPOLOGY BY REN WAROM
Escapology by Ren Warom (Titan Books, 2016)
If I reveal that the characters in Escapology, Ren Warom’s first novel, have names such as Amiga, Shock, Twist and Deuce then some of you will immediately deduce a great deal more about the book. You’ll intuit that this is an everyday story of hacker folk. You may guess that these down-at-heel types live in a world of improbably lurid crime bosses. Or that the events take place amidst a mulched-together mish-mash of far Eastern cultures. You’ll almost certainly be able to predict that the plot revolves around an improbable heist and semi-mystical technology.
Escapology crams all the familiar cyberpunk set-dressing between its covers with a completeness that feels almost like compulsion. From an unlikely virtual reality realm in which hacking requires solving Crystal Maze style puzzles to neon-splashed, rain-sluiced streets filled with ramen bars – all the unmistakable elements are formed with cookie cutter neatness and tidily stacked. Whether this is taken as an opportunity to revel in nostalgia or as a tedious rehashing of a worn-out future will, I suppose, depend upon the reader. I found the whole thing a slightly dispiriting experience. It’s not that Escapology doesn’t have nice moments – there’s a car chase escape in the final quarter that is a well-handled action sequence and some of the dialogue was sharp enough to make me laugh out loud. However, the whole thing is so firmly fixed on familiar rails that I frequently struggled to find any motivation to return to the book.
Escapology is too long. There’s a subplot about giant paddle-wheel-driven moving islands whose purpose I still haven’t fathomed. Other events drag on at extraordinary length and forward momentum is thrown away as viewpoint characters pause to muse on history and sociology or indulge in amateur psychological analysis of their own motivations. There is a leaner, more enjoyable, 300 page novel struggling to free itself from the 450 pages presented here and an editor should have found it.
Cyberpunk has always had a problematic relationship with “The East” – smothering it with love even as it alienates us from the object of its desire. Even at its best the subgenre has tended to use Eastern cultural references as lazy exoticism. During cyberpunk’s first-flowering the appropriation of Eastern cultural elements at least served a purpose – unsettling Western readers’ comfortable assumptions about what the future should look like. Even then, though, it was often a problematic technique. Four decades on, this seam has been worked to exhaustion and the descent into over familiarity and cliché has undermined any usefulness in the tropes.
It’s never clear to me what purpose the Korean, Chinese and Japanese cultural paraphernalia serves in Escapology or why this range of cultures are mushed together except, perhaps, that it provides the characters something interesting to eat (it feels as though there’s a lot of food in the novel.) Some of the characters are identified as Asian but everyone speaks and thinks in the same sardonic, Californian-inflected internal monologue that is another trope of soft-boiled cyberpunk. In mannerism, voice and thought the main characters are, too often, indistinguishable and all cultural diversity feels skin deep.
Ironically, had Warom set her story amongst the chippies and curry houses of the Midlands (where her biography says she lives) instead of an imagined Occident then Escapology’s cyber-noir stylings might have felt stranger, fresher and more interesting.
One curious element of Escapology is the treatment of the central character Shock’s (a hacker, obviously) transgender status. Warom is clearly sympathetic but the denouement – in which Shock is forced to accept a part of him (an avatar in the form of an octopus) that is apparently innately and resolutely feminine despite his painful rejection of that identity – is uncomfortable. I believe Warom is trying to give the character a sense of peace after a (literally, in places) tortuous character arc – but the best one can say about it is that it feels confusing.
Some readers will revel in Escapology – glad to back in this kind of place with these kinds of people. I can see that appeal. But this familiarity also edges the book too close to pastiche and is its greatest weakness. There were moments when I did enjoy the book. And there were moments which I genuinely enjoyed. But I’ve been down these neon-lit streets and surfed these virtual landscapes too often. I won’t be returning for the sequel, Virology, which is already on sale.
A slightly shorter version of this review originally appeared in The BSFA Review (No. 10, Spring 2020).
