The first look.
youtube
The first look at my game! We're starting another project now but I'm definitely going to develop this in the future. Admittedly, it is not very long and doesn't look like I've put too much work into it but that's because it took so long to just get the tile map.

TILEMAP COMPLETED
Tumblr media
This is my completed tile map. It includes a dragon statue that I will expand on once I figure out cutscenes. For now you just walk past it.

GAME OVER SCREENS
Tumblr media
Dead By Daylight - Technically you could class this as a you win screen as well however this is just an example. I couldn't find one for survivor but that would normally say "sacrificed" "escaped" or "died" (I think, can't remember).
Tumblr media
Minecraft - Pretty simple, fits the game perfectly.
Tumblr media
Five Nights At Freddy's 2 (I think) - Again, mostly simple. It fits with the game as the face of it is right there in the picture.

FONT IDEAS FOR WIN/LOSE SCREEN AND PROBABLY HEALTH BAR
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want a pixel font as my game is a pixel art game and I feel it would be out of place otherwise.

In the idle animation video, the animations are shown to be truly unique to the character and what their personality is. It truly shows how much of an importance animating based on the character is. In the evolution of jump animations about Sonic video, it shows how little effort gets put in over time. It mostly seemed to get worse and worse, with a few exceptions obviously. In the Crash Bandicoot death animation comparison video, it shows how in remakes you can really develop the original ideas. Having different death animations for different situations that are unique to the character AND still using those ideas in the remake really gives a feeling of nostalgia, as if you were playing the original game.

TILE MAPS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are three tile maps. Donkey Kong, Mega Man and Super Mario. Super Mario reuses certain assets like the bush to create the clouds. This saves a lot of time because you can just copy and paste and re color.

Other examples of health systems
Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion. This game uses a health bar that is made up of star icons. This fits the games fantasy theme. You start with three and can collect more as you go. If you get hit you lose one start and go back to the last checkpoint, if you lose all stars you restart the level.
Devil May Cry 5. (Absolutely love this game series if you couldn't tell by my pfp) DMC5 has a mostly simple health bar system unless you are playing as V. V has 3 other health bars to look at and make sure are at high enough level as the only way V can fight is with his demon creatures, if they go into stalemate than he can either summon Nightmare or wait for them to come back on their own (I think that's how it works, never had them die so I don't know). Other than that you have the vitality bar that you have to watch carefully, especially in battles with Urizen or Vergil (the same person but eh).
Crash Bandicoot. In Crash, there is no such thing as a health bar. You take one hit, you will die and restart.

Health Systems
Health Bar - Owlboy. Owlboy uses a very basic health bar system that shows at the top left of your screen.
Hearts/Icons - Hollow Knight. The health system in Hollow Knight is much more interesting. It is five skulls instead of hearts/a normal health bar. This fits much more with the theme of the game.
Single Hit - Kirby. Kirby has no real distinct way to show health. It seems to change from game to game.

COLLECTABLES
Collectables are what a protagonist in a game collects throughout it. In my game a good example of this would be the dragon scales or notebook pages. In other games, like Donkey Kong, Resident Evil 4, DOOM (2016), Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Fallout 3. In Donkey Kong Country 3, you can collect DK Coins throughout the level. This fits Donkey Kong because they're DK Coins and are named after the characters in the game themselves. In Resident Evil 4, you "collect" Blue Medallions. In my opinion these don't exactly fit the game as it is mostly supposed to be a dark survival horror but I can't complain about it. In DOOM (2016), you collect action figures of the Doom Slayer himself. Like DK Coins in Donkey Kong, this fits the theme perfectly as it is the exact character you play as. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has a Gold Bolt collectable. This fits the theme as a ratchet is a tool used to allow for turning in one direction only, for example used on spanners/wrenches, which can be used to tighten bolts. In Fallout 3 you collect bobble heads of I believe Vault Boy however I am unsure. This fits because it is one of the main attributes of the game, seeing this boy around everywhere, sometimes even on the face of the Fallout games themselves.

A few videos and an article about animation and how it works (I'll actually watch/read these when I get home today, I have difficulty concentrating on videos and it would be better if I took my time about it.)

Tile maps
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Added my tile map into the game! I still need to add a few assets like some sort of damaging thing that isn't the void (I'll add the full tile map as an image once I have completed my other assets).

Mega Man Walkcycles
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The difference in Mega Man walkcycles is the Mega Man 1 walkcycle is much less complex and only contains three frames whereas the Mega Man 8 walkcycle is much more complex and contains many more frames and would take way longer to animate and has more detail. Personally, I prefer the Mega Man 1 walkcycle as it is more nostalgic.
