God I fuxking hate the prince he should have just died tbh
How the boys found out Hong Deok-su is actually a woman named Hong Jae-on:
Cheon Jun-hwa: by accident and keeps it a secret. Later admits that he knew for a long time (apologizes that he didn't say anything earlier) and offers to help her. No questions asked why she hides the fact she's a woman. He just wants to protect her.
Ko So-ra: she tells him and asks for help. He does, and assumes she must have her reasons to hide. Keeps it a secret as well, but guesses that Jun-hwa knew eventually.
Prince Mu-yeong/Lee Eun-ho:"How could you...??" Asks her why and then instead of waiting for the answer, he immediately makes her responsible for his own feelings. Then basically tells her she should've stayed hidden. He then proceeds to keep it hidden that he is a Prince even though she asked him who he really is. Demands the other half of the golden key that he has zero rights to have. Goes for sympathy in order to get the key and they agree to work together. And in the span of 24hrs he kisses her.

She had daddy issues running deep... girlie took the crown of dumbest female lead in kdrama this year
No, but seriously, I CANNOT comprehend what must've gone through this idiot woman's mind...
When her mom was killed and she was grieving, the fucking Prince threw her mothers clothes into the fire(specifically the ones Jae-on was holding onto tightly like a lifeline). Forces her to come back after a short mourning phase.
Meanwhile Jun-hwa visited the place to bring medicine and food without pestering Jae-on and when she comes back he cooked her the moms signature dish to cheer her up and give her strength. Even asks why she didn't rest for longer. Because he fucking understands that losing someone so suddenly is not easy to handle.
Like.... Jun-hwa cares so much about her and her well-being and she chooses someone who has done nothing but make her life harder and the moment he faces an inconvenience he makes it her fault. Like, girl, you do not have the daddy issues required to pick a bastard prince who'll ruin your life.
I know I'm repeating myself but it bothers me so much. She deserves someone who DOESN'T shame her, use her or manipulate her. She deserves someone who loves, supports and cares for her 😭

I would kill for you to tell us when was the moment she stopped being creeped out by him and when she first started liking him because from what I remember it came out of nowhere and very suddenly
Even now, while watching the show cohesively without waiting for the next episode for a week, I cannot find a single ounce of chemistry between Jae-on and Eun-ho 😭 they try with all those seemingly cute moments, but completely ignore how creepy he was the whole time. It makes zero sense for Jae-on to fall for Eun-ho. Not even in the sense of "love makes no sense"....she should be repulsed by him and his actions.
It's so unbelievably forced 😭 never have I ever watched a canon ship more forced into existence. The way it started was also really weird. All of a sudden there are feelings other than hatred? Like, someone snapped their fingers and they both were on the same page for no fucking reason at all. It's not like there was a spark to begin with.

Jae-On was uncomfortable af and has always been around him. She always thought that he was an entitled prick and its crazy that all of a sudden she changed her mind
Wait a damn minute....
When Jae-on falls into the river, at first, she thought Jun-hwa saved her and was EXTREMELY HAPPY and grateful for that.
Until she realizes it was Lee Eun-ho who saved her and then panic settled in.
Writer, just wtf were you thinking by ruining a perfectly good ship and force another onto us.
People probably wanna argue that she's more at ease with Jun-hwa (who was friendly and kind to her the whole time), than Eun-ho due to her getting flustered, but my peepz....she hates his guts. She is appalled that she's indebted to that prick she can't stand.
Being indebted to Jun-hwa? Awesome, she was ready to massage his shoulders and was hanging all over him, which was cute and hilarious cause Jun-hwa didn't know how to deal with her being a woman 🤣
But Eun-ho? Nah, she prolly rather would've died in that river than being saved by him. She is totally freaking out (and rightfully so, that asshole kissed her underwater for absolutely no reason. You can't give someone air the way he did, it was so unnecessary)
And also, it rubs me the wrong way how entitled he acts. She didn't ask for him to save her. He's just using that fact because he wants the golden key she has.

Everything pissing me off with the writing in random order
The importance of the quator completely disappearing the moment the prince finds out Jae-On is a girl
The prince only making a move learning Jae-On is a woman
The prince throwing (THROWING) himself at Jae-On once he found out
Go Su Ra character just being thrown away and being put in scenes only to resonate Jun Hwa. Character mistreatment going crazy
The prince having no interest into being the crown prince and randomly wanting the position for it to be a lie ? Thought you finally got some backbone but apparently not
The defense minister daughter character disappearing completely and randomly
Jun Hwa learning the truth about the events of 12 years ago during the last 10 min of episode 15
Jun Hwa turning bad shit crazy (that was very hot but random of the character)
Jae-On completely turning herself on Jun-Hwa after finding out he was the son of Cheon. Like girl ? He was a kid when your dad was killed and isn't responsible, also he helped and protected you so much for you to turn your back first moment ? Be so fcking for real
Jae-On forgiving the prince for lying, manipulating her in like 5 business hours ? Lazy writing
Jae-On double standards on Jun-Hwa and boring ass prince
Jae-On always focused on her romance and all of a sudden she is smooching and having so much interest in romance? Be for real
Boring Prince never calling Jae-On, Jae-On, always calling her Hong Deok Su.
The importance of the friendship between Jae-On and Su-Ra randomly disappearing once she had the romance with the prince
The whole casino plot line dissappearing
Never knowing what happened to Jae-On mother
Forcing down our throat the romance plotline between the prince and Jae-On
The second hand man of the prince also disappearing
The scheming family of the Defense Minister also disappearing
The whole "sharing the golden key because I love you and they represent us needing to be together" STFU that pissed me off
Seol Mae Hwa and Jae-On relationship was not given enough respect
Congratulations to check in hanyang for taking the crown of terrible writing after strong woman 2 !

Im currently watching the finale (getting mad just from seeing the prince) and you LITTERALY took the words out of my mouth
Like ? The prince would have gained much more of my respect if he 1) tried to make a move on her without knowing she was actually a girl 2) did not jump on her as soon as he found out her gender 3)Had not been a weirdo as soon as he started to realise his feelings for her
I think there is so much lazy/bad/poorly written things (but I think I'll make a full post on it)
The prince is a bother and by your post I understand he does not die which truly sadden me. I will continue to hope till the end for his death. Respectfully ig
Hear me out
After the last eps of check in hanyang multiple stuff are clear to me
Eun-ho (the prince) and Jae-on (Deok-su) have no chemistry
Trying to make in the futur (or maniuplating us ?) into thinking Jun-hwa is gonna be a vilain like its my girl and not youurs would be lazy writing
In my very humble opinion it would be better if Jae-on and Jun-hwa ended up together and it would be feel as lazy writing ?
Why ?
Their names litteraly complete each other
They have undeniable chemistry
Jun-hwa always protected Jae-on without pushing his feelings onto her and ostracizing her
It would make much more sense for Jae-on character, like you are telling me this girl that grew up pretending to be a man could easily fit into a crown-princess role ? And be happy ? Be so for real
He started falling for her when she was pretending to be a man
When he found out she was a girl he did not litteraly jump on her to kiss her two days after ?
Jun-hwa always respected Jae-on boundaries
Seol Mae Hwa aka Jae-on mother figure entrusted her to Jun-hwa not the prince
As kdrama watcher I know how to recognize them pusing the prince and jae-on agenda, like he appeared first, he saved her when drowning blah blah.. but it feels like such lazy writing...
I think it's time to grow out of those lazy writings plots

Choose your fighter
The boring Prince who wants Jae-On to stop and give up on her revenge. Also always calling her Hong Deok Su ? You know that's not her name do better
Or
Jun-Hwa who is ready to let the world burn for her, wants to help and tells her to uses him as she needs for her revenge.

That would be so much more interesting that Jae-On and Jun-Hwa were to end together. Getting revenge together ? Amazing
Just imagine the two of them and the headmaster chilling at the hotel after killing Master Cheon ? Just sipping tea and being happy ?
And the boring ass prince can just stay in his palace or whatever 🙄
I still enjoy Check in Hanyang but not because of the FL/ML (awkward) romance (they are so flat, honestly) but because Jun-hwa went batshit crazy, red-flagging all over the place, and the only one who seems to have some kind of control over him is Jae-on.
Exactly my kind of ship. Let the crown prince do royal stuff and enjoy your life with that feral boyfriend of yours, Jun-hwa. With a little blodd splatter as a treat.
It would be so much more interesting to see Jun-haw and Jae-on find some shaky, common ground, kill that evil mastermind and maybe have some romance while they're at it. Their chemistry is delicious.

they truly are putting the ship down on throats like ?
They have no chemistry, no tension... both actors are amzing but chracters wise it doesn't work much and it would not feel very logical as well writing wise
Why do they force this ship so muuu-huuu-huuu-huuuuchhhh 😭😭
I don't like the prince. Jae-on should either be by herself and happy or with Jun-hwa because duh. Hell, atp I'd rather see her with So-ra.

I agree 100%, both actors are amazing but they just have no chemistry, no tension... i want yearning, i want hapiness no an upgraded fish kiss
Once again with feeling: Jae-on and Eun-ho have zero chemistry 😊 their kiss looked extremely uncomfortable and awkward.

we were ROBBED
Just me at the newest Check in Hanyang episode:
Tumblr media
You mean to tell me that if Cheon Mak-dong hadn't fucked over Hong Min-sik, Jun-hwa and Jae-on (Deok-su) would've grown up knowing each other??? YOU TELLING ME THEY COULD'VE POSSIBLY BEEN ENGAGED AND GET MARRIED??? (I know it's a reach, but let's be honest, that's how things usually go)
Gotta lie don't for a bit to process this...

I actually agree 1000%
What makes family by choice so amazing is the way mental health, and trauma is so openly discussed, its not just something you use as a plot line.
The characters have a pain within them and it is with them always, but sometimes it comes out. And they talk about it, they verbalize it.
The pain is in them, but they can heal. They can talk. There will be better days
Tumblr media
i want to talk about how tenderly and tactfully the subject of trauma has been handled in family by choice. full credit to the original c-drama for the story — but the remake is my first introduction to the show and its premise.
families can be a person's first experience of a wound: that single unanswerable ache from which each of your hurts flow and fountain forward. it's rare for k-dramas to acknowledge this: to acknowledge that the individual to whom you are born may not belong to you. may not give you the grace you require to grow. may not take your small, hot hand; hungry for solace — and instead simply cast it aside. your family can be your first sharp disappointment — your first clear shock at the sheer ugliness of the world. to some, love is freely given — to others it is nothing more than a bone flung from a scant table. you hug the hunger like it's your own bed-pillow — it becomes your only home. the only house you ever live in.
through sanha & haejun's characters; one can see how the talons of trauma can mark you forever. both actors deserve accolades for the raw desperation and confusion in their eyes at the weight they're being asked to carry — especially inyoup. there's a muted, exhausted malaise in his eyes — the gaze of an adult caged within a teenager's body. by contrast, haejun appears younger than his years — a helpless, childlike hurt and betrayal borne by his eyes. both boys carry boulders unfit for such delicate shoulders — because there is a special kind of cruelty in asking a child to bear a burden that was never theirs to begin with. in lining their shoes with the gravel of grief since they were old enough to walk.
what does it to do to a child (in haejun's case) to be told that love is not intrinsic — and that it has to be earned? that it has to be paid back? what does it do to a child (in sanha's case) to be told that you are not enough as your own self — that you will never be forgiven for a flaw that was never yours to start with? what does it mean to taste a parent's neglect on your own tongue — to have it tint every part of your speech for the rest of time?
what does it mean to be a father to such children — as juwon's appa so fiercely upholds? to treat their scars as sacred. to harbor their hurts in his own hands. family by choice is as much about trauma as it is about healing — about the people knitted to you through their knowledge of your wounds; their patience with your past; their trust that your tears are temporary. about the neighbors, friends, and forged bonds that may not be of blood, yet sustain you nonetheless; surround your spirit with warmth. the people who choose you knowing the charred heartbreak in your chest — who love and accept you knowing the latticework of your loneliness: the people who press it all away with a single touch or smile – they are your true faith. they are your true family. they are the only ones who matter.
sanha, haejun, and juwon all have their crosses to bear — but they also have each other. there is always light to temper the dark. there is always sanha's eyes; and the way they soften when he looks at juwon: the jewel-toned reverence with which he reflects on every single thing she does for him. wherever there is trauma there is also and always a tryst with hope — a heart holding on to the idea that there will be more. there will be peace. there will be resolution. there will be sunlight at the end of the black silence.
family by choice reminds me of this quote by poet and novelist ocean vuong: "we were born from beauty. let no one mistake us for the fruit of violence—but that violence, having passed through the fruit, failed to spoil it."
