hi! i would recommend a miniature or small standard poodle honestly. the main 3 breeds (lab/golden/poodle) are common for a reason--they are the most likely to succeed at service work
people overstate how hard poodle coats are to maintain. yes if you have a poodle in a conti it will take more time and effort to groom. if you have a poodle shaved down, then grooming is shaving every 3 months or so, then brushing 1x/week. they are honestly easier for me to maintain than shedding breeds where you have to brush multiple times/day when they blow coat so they don't cause issues with public access
poodles are also pretty quiet and easy to live with, and have decent health. there are health issues but most of them can be screened out (ex: vWD can only be passed down if both parents are carriers so if at least 1 parent tests clear then you're safe)
i would highly suggest speaking with a trainer who trains service dogs if you really can't manage golden/lab/poodle for breed choices, because the breeds you've been going for so far are not really well suited for service work, especially for certain disabilities (ex: herding breeds tend to be handler sensitive and will be affected by your anxiety if you have a psych disability)
Pip! I wanted to say thank u for your SD posts! I can't go w/ the common breeds like goldens/poodles/labs or mixes of these bc I have needs they don't fit (20-45 lbs, low maintenance coat, quiet, aloof with strangers, won't die of cancer at 4 etc), but u made me realize that, like, a schipperke or kooiker wouldn't work lol. I wasn't considering public accessibility! I'm still looking for a good breed. So far I've got tollers + aussie sheps. But anyway thank u! Also pls pet ur creachers for me
Tbh I would still rec a poodle. You can just get them shaved down every 3 or 4 months and yeah you do have to brush in between but you'd have to do a lot of brushing for a toller or aussie too. You're much more likely to find a poodle with the qualities you're looking for from a breeder who has placed service prospects before. I can try to find some info for u about ppl who breed nice moyen sized poods if u would like! I brought ur info to the service dog channel of dogcord and they agreed that toller or aussie will likely pose a lot more challenges for a first time handler. JUST MY IMO

Unpopular opinion, but people should be required to take a basic species-specific husbandry course before they should be allowed to keep an animal.

I pick up a puppy and things don't seem so bad anymore. They are all learning to walk and annoy each other. Eyes are open and they all have such personalities.
And ofc, puppy breath ❤
