tarot & tropes: day nine
thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! can't stop, won't stop with the bourbon plot!!! before you read today's catch up on day one, day six & day seven. as always, feel free to pop into my ask box with your headcanons or metas, or reblog to support!
- - - - -
the trope: grumpy / sunshine the spread: go away / come closer the pull: six of cups / ace of pentacles
- - - - -
“I thought orgasms were supposed to make you happy,” they tease, pinching your side where they know you’re sensitive.
You bat their hand away and wish you could turn your body off.
“Maybe you didn’t do it right,” you lie. They’d played you like a freshly-tuned string instrument, making gorgeous melodies from their first chair seat.
They roll their eyes—a painfully familiar gesture you didn’t realize you missed until now—and start to move away, putting space between them and your signature snark.
You catch their wrist in a loose, but secure grip.
“Where do you think you’re going?”

day nine of the #TarotTropes themed spread series: grumpy/sunshine . you know it, you love it: sometimes the shiny happy one finds the dark twisty one. this might be an opposites attract situation, or could live alongside other tropes instead, but grumpy / sunshine can be such a fun dynamic to play with. . as always, feel free to use this spread to explore your original characters and favorite ships, your d&d characters, or to play around with the prompts in whatever way suits your fancy. if you'd like me to share your work, tag me and use the hashtag #TarotTropes!

tarot & tropes: day eight
thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! today, we're back with micah x tai! this excerpt maaay give away a bit of plot, but oh well, we've earned it! feel free to pop into my ask box with questions or flailings, or reblog to support!
- - - - -
the trope: idiots in love the spread: of course we're not together / wait a minute the pull: seven of swords / eight of cups
- - - - -
As hard as Micah’s trying to follow, Tai’s not making any sense.
They’d set out to win, and they’d done it. Followed the plan to the letter. Played their parts with aplomb. But their commitment always had an end date. It wasn’t personal, they’d simply reached the break-up part of their public narrative.
For months, Micah’s had the perfect post drafted in her notes app. It gives equal parts consciously uncoupling and remaining close. Then, Tai could go back to her cool, Highland Park life, and Micah would go back to just being her little sister’s best friend.
Right?
Unless…

tarot & tropes: day seven
thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! the bourbon plot simply must continue, so before you read today's catch up on day one & day six. as always, feel free to pop into my ask box with your headcanons or metas, or reblog to support!
- - - - -
the trope: forbidden love the spread: we couldn't possibly / i'll never tell the pull: The Hierophant / The Moon
- - - - -
The bed becomes a sanctuary of plentiful, prodigal praise. Divine rules and cosmic surrender. Hands blur as boundaries do, overheated and under negotiated. Lips take communion, every taste as blood-red as holy wine, every gasp as transcendent as the promise of rebirth.
There is no turning back.
Key obtained, door shoved open. Secrets revealed in the ghostly glow of midnight.
Please, breaks the silence. By who, it hardly matters, not when the need is so great, the mountain’s peak within reach.
All of the grapes in the world couldn’t produce the feeling of being full of barrel-aged corn and compulsion.

tarot & tropes: day six
thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! we're halfway through, so for today's trope, i returned to my day one: hurt/comfort pairing - but from the other pov! feel free to pop into my ask box with your headcanons or metas, or reblog to support!
- - - - -
the trope: slow burn the spread: a subtle hint / a major move the pull: The Wheel / The Devil
- - - - -
This has been building for a while.
You know it.
They know it.
Nothing about this meeting tonight was clandestine. Unlike a game of roulette, you made strategic moves to get here. You plotted and manifested their presence. Reeled them in with bait made of bourbon and bad decisions.
You’re hungry for them in a way that feels dangerous. Always have been, which is why you’ve kept your distance. Why you’ve never crossed the line. Why you disappeared, all those years ago…
“C’mere,” you command. Soft, but firm.
They walk through the shadow of the valley of death, towards you.

Tarot & Tropes Day 5
Tarot & Tropes Day 5: Second Chance, prompt and tarot spread from @3am-tarot
I lost you: The High Priestess
You found me: King of Wands
She was the last person I thought I’d see here, four thousand miles away from home, but here she was, turning heads as her heels clicked against the polished exhibition floor. As always, she was impeccably dressed in her fitted sheath dress and blazer, her auburn hair cascading in waves down her shoulders–longer than when I’d last seen her.
Any semblance of aloof artist cool that I was clinging to was immediately gone. “Emilia, I…” I spluttered in disbelief. My head swam; my hands felt too big and unnecessary and loud.
“Rowan–” Hearing my name on her lips again felt like lost, forbidden music– “You can hide all you want and say it’s for art or inspiration or whatever flimsy high-minded excuses you tell yourself. But…” Her sea-green gaze softened, her voice dipping low. “But I refuse to go through this life without you.”
And then she was kissing me, and nothing else mattered anymore.

thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! i don't know who these honeys are, but they sure do want each other. feel free to continue this story with your own pulls, pop into my ask box with your headcanons or metas, or just reblog to support!
- - - - -
the trope: second chance the spread: i lost you / you found me the pull: five of pentacles / three of wands
- - - - -
“I had no idea how popular the song ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ by Bill Withers was until I lost you.”
“Come on.”
“It’s true. Every elevator, grocery store, radio station, and long telephone hold has taunted me, dripping ice cold backwash into my proverbial beggar’s bowl.”
“You have such a way with words.”
“Tell me you think about me.”
“I think about you. Of course I think about you.”
“Tell me you still love me.”
“I still love you.”
“Tell me when you think about the future, I’m there next to you.”
“You’re not just next to me. You found me.”

Tarot & Tropes Day 4
Tarot & Tropes Day 4: Enemies to Lovers, prompt and tarot spread from @3am-tarot
I wish you were dead: The Emperor
I won’t let them hurt you: Six of Cups
Dr. Devon Ackermann was still sitting at his desk in the tiny wing of the History building that was dedicated to the Gender Studies department. The light from his open window–or lack thereof–indicated that it was deep into twilight, the breeze carrying in the slightest notion of chilly September nights to come. He sighed, shutting his laptop, pushing aside a pile of “he/they” pronoun pins and a half-full coffee mug, long cold. All of the incoming majors had been assigned advisors, the few courses running this semester were set up in classrooms, the emails in his inbox reduced to zero three hours ago.
And still, Dev slumped in his office chair, trying to get a handle on their emotions. It was a great triumph and testament to their own work recruiting that the department was able to hire another full-time professor. The search had gone well, but at the last minute, their number one candidate withdrew–an older trans woman and ethics researcher–and the committee was quick to appoint Dr. Templeton Wright, some young upstart fresh out of his PhD and some teaching abroad. Sure, Dev had five more years of experience under their belt, and had the output of almost double that, but it felt like their ideas and service to the department were being tossed away for something new and shiny.
On top of all of that, Dr. Wright was…appallingly handsome. His caramel skin and shock of jet-black hair reminded Dev in all the worst ways of the man who had shattered his heart in graduate school. The esteemed Dr. Ackermann had no use for reminiscing; he only looked forward, working towards progress and rights and independence and not at all thinking about shared secret smiles or affectionate caresses or deep, desperate kisses, and especially not about the way that his heart had skipped a beat when Dr. Wright introduced himself this morning, moving into the office next door.
What kind of name was “Templeton,” anyway? Some curse of a moniker bestowed upon a child along with the pressure to achieve more than his parents had.
Dev was startled out of his brooding by the ringtone on his phone. It was an unknown number, but something urged him to pick up. “Dr. Ackermann speaking,” he intoned.
“Hi. It’s…Templeton…Dr. Wright..it’s Tea. I’m sorry it’s late, but I’m having a bit of a…I need your help.” Their new colleague’s tenor voice wavered. He sounded afraid.
Dev was out the door before he could even respond.
Y’all, my deck is SO into this challenge. I dropped the Five of Swords while I was shuffling, and I was like, yeah, I know, it’s Enemies to Lovers today. Also, this is obviously fantasy, because full-time professor appointments exist, lol. Keep the fun coming, Meg, and thank you–double thank you because I used Finding the Fool for inspiration today!

tarot & tropes: day four
thank you to @3am-tarot for hosting! it's day three of three of meeting my interconnected pairings of characters & today's--carly x christina--are the newest to join the party! in fact, this is the first thing i've written for them :) feel free to pop into my ask box with questions or flailings, or reblog to support!
- - - - -
the trope: enemies to lovers the spread: i wish you were dead / i won't let them hurt you the pull: nine of pentacles / The Chariot
- - - - -
Carly shoves through the throng of background actors to order a gin and tonic.
She’s breaking so many of her rules: Never fraternize with the cast. Never go out the night before an early call. Never drink at work.
A loud laugh snags her attention. Ugh, of course it’s her. Christina always crosses camps, always shows up to set in last night’s eyeliner, and is always drinking a fucking Miller High Life.
But then a tall, tattooed extra puts hands on her, and she’s not laughing anymore, and by the time Christina creates space between them, Carly’s inexplicably filling it.

Tarot & Tropes Day 3
Tarot & Tropes Day 3: prompt and tarot spread from @3am-tarot: Friends to Lovers
I know you so well: The Hierophant
There’s so much I didn’t know: The Hermit
You always brushed off compliments, said you just weren’t an interesting person, but I called bullshit on that from the start. It’s not that I knew better, or knew you better–maybe it’s my tendency to see the light in everyone, or my innate sense of sonder that drives my wanderings in this world. There was no way that someone so full of thoughtfulness and kindness didn’t enclose something beautiful within.
So I danced the delicate rituals of spring and soul and longing, and you unfolded for me, one exquisite petal at a time.
