Winter Pomanders

Pomanders are an early form of aromatherapy. They came into fashion in Europe in the 1200s, and were originally a silver or gold perforated ball filled with very expensive aromatic ingredients. At first only the most elite wore pomanders and considered them religious keepsakes, but gradually they became part of the standard outfit of a well-dressed woman.

During the renaissance, the term pomander was more widely applied to a mixture of resins and spices that was blended and molded into an apple shape. In the Victorian era, oranges punctured with whole cloves became the new pomanders. The earlier ingredients, including ambergris, civet, and musk, were simply too expensive, and oranges were considered sufficiently exotic in the 1800s to be used as a pomander.

The orange is punctured with cloves (which keep the fruit from molding), and the smells mingle and waft through the home. We recommend adding a few drops of essentials oils on the orange to add to the festival smell. Clove, black pepper, andcinnamon essential oils are perfect winter scents, and a touch of ylang ylang adds a beautiful exotic floral.
