Rooster used to be a boxer but somehow he ends up being Hangman’s bodyguard without even realizing who he really is (at first at least).

He’s friends with Phoenix who is working on a mafia case together with Maverick, a private investigator who became obsessed with the Seresin after Iceman (Chief of the police) was murdered.

Phoenix finally decides to go undercover but that quickly turns into an awkward situation after she finds out about Rooster working for Hangman (and possibly falls helplessly in love with Coyote).

I’m not sure about Halo’s (and the other Daggers’) role in this so feel free to suggest something.

I’m just yearning for a Mafia AU in which the characters are really actually bad people.

Hello everyone! We are currently in the midst of planning the Top Gun Big Bang ‘25 - and are hoping to gauge interest from people in the fandom! This fest will revolve around two ships: Icemav and Hangster. All works need to include one of these ships as the main pair, background and side relationships are welcome.

A Big Bang is a fest where an author writes a fic with a minimum word count of 20k, which is edited by a beta and then finally an artist draws a companion piece to go along with the fic. At this stage, we are wanting to see who would be interested in participating, and depending on interest, we would look at sign ups opening in February!

Jake "Hangman" Seresin headcanon

Okay, okay, imagine:

Jake's first word is jet. Not Momma, not Daddy. JET!

By the time he's two, he can name every US navy fighter jet/plane by looking at pictures and the only toys he has are realistic looking but very fragile models of jets and planes that are probably not appropriate for a toddler. Jake still has them at 32. He was very careful.

When he's seven, he can recite basic data about the navy jets: max. speed, G-force, weight, wingspan, etc.

He's in middle school when he's able to calculate speed, acceleration, pressure, centrifugal force, etc. He might be dyslexic but when it comes to numbers, he's a BEAST.

He's a damn nerd when it comes to physics and fighter jets, knows more about it than all of his peers at the academy, perhaps even Bradley.

And people think he just wants to be the best to impress the higher-ups, and partially, it's true. But rarely anyone sees that fighter jets and everything around that topic genuinely interests Jake to a point that could be considered unhealthy.

To my fellow non-native English speakers:

Do y'all also struggle with sentence structures and choice of words when trying to write in English?

Because I do.

But it's not necessarily because I'm bad at English but rather because I'm often not sure if my style is appropriate. I especially struggled right after watching shows like Bridgerton and Peaky Blinders because the English spoken there is so different from modern American English and I oftentimes can't tell whether my choice of words fits my story and my style.

Does anyone else know this problem, or am I the only one? Help.

I recently learned what “tapping out” is.

For those who don’t know (I’m not an expert by any means though): after graduating, the graduates have to wait standing at attention until a family member touches them. I’m pretty sure it’s more of a thing in the Air Force because I haven’t found anything on the internet indicating that it’s also done in the Navy.

But imagine if it was!!! Imagine our baby pilots having to wait after graduating from the academy for their loved ones to come and tap them out.

I’m pretty sure that Bradley didn’t go to the academy but the rest of them?

Just imagine Jake standing there knowing no one’s going to be there for him (family either dead or estranged) and then Javy comes up to him after being tapped out by his family and hugs him. Imagine that this is the moment they went from casual bunk mates to best friends.

This is an unusual post because this blog is, like, 95 % fandom related but I just felt the need to share this. In 2017 I first drew a more or less detailed version of this and two days ago decided that I should do it again, just to visualize the progress I’ve made over the past few years. I’m kind of proud and I honestly gotta say that I cried a little bit when I finished this.

So, I’ve been thinking.

One of my favourite tropes in books, movies or shows is the obsessed artist. A mixture of genius and insanity. So, I’m trying to think of ways in which Bradley and Jake might fit into that category.

For Bradley, it’s pretty straightforward in my opinion. He’s obsessed with proving Maverick wrong, obsessed with flying as best as he can and (but this is kind of a headcanon) obsessed with Jake. He can’t get over how Jake always seems to be the superior pilot, someone who is seemingly better at everything where he himself is lacking. He tries to compensate by telling himself that Jake is a bad team player and arrogant (true, but I think he might still be the better pilot). From the second time watching TGM and rewatching TG1986 it was clear that there are parallels between Mav and Hangman whereas Rooster seems more like Ice. At least when it comes to the way they fly. This might also be a reason for why Bradley and Jake seem to not get along at all. Now, this is purely a headcanon based on what I read in Hangster fanfics: Bradley being obsessed with Jake as a sexual object. While a lot of those stories are advertised as romance stories the way Bradley thinks about Jake and about what he likes about him seems very superficial and oftentimes solely focused on Jake’s body.

In conclusion: Bradley is obsessed with proving Mav wrong and with Jake, either as his rival and/or the object of Bradley’s sexual phantasies.

Now, when it comes to Jake being obsessive there’s a lot more room to play: we don’t really know much about Hangman aside from his tendencies to leave people behind and only care about himself. And of course his callsign. While the movie suggest that his callsign refers to him leaving his teammates hanging or his air-to-air kill (hangman = executioner) I think it’s secretly because of his dyslexia (solely headcanon). Therefore, it must have been a great struggle for him to get through school, the academy, flight school and Top Gun. The fact that he most likely excelled is probably because he, too, is obsessed with flying and being the best.

However, this still leaves his character kind of flat.

One of my favourite shows is Queens Gambit, a series about a young female chess genius in the fifties and sixties who is truly obsessed with the game to the point where she fails to take proper care of herself. (If you’ve watched it you know what I mean, if not… I really wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s on Netflix.)

Something I’ve read in numerous fanfics is how Jake never joins the others whenever Bradley is at the piano playing and singing. And this might either be due to his jealousy towards him because Bradley seems so much more popular and likeable. But today I remembered something my music teacher in high school said. He once told us about this one man with whom he sang in the church choir and how worked up the guy got when people sang off-key. That was because he had absolute hearing and couldn’t handle people singing in a different pitch even if they didn’t sound off-key to anyone else. So, Jake never joins the others because Bradley frequently sings in a different pitch compared to what the original sounds like. This leads to my other not-navy/flying related obsession. Music. It’s either the piano or the violin.

In my head, he inherited this trait from his mother, a great pianist or violinist, started to play at a very young age and became great at it himself. In this case, Jake kind of grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, a seemingly perfect childhood. However, behind the scenes he has a neglectful mother and an uncaring father who doesn’t bother supporting his wife through her depression and other mental illnesses. The only thing binding Jake to his mother is their common obsession with music. A vivid memory of Jake with his mother is how he’d watch her take numerous pills, downing them with either wine or bourbon before sitting down next to her on the piano stool. As an adult he refuses to take any opioids or anxiety medication and has a love-hate relationship with music because it always brings him back to those moments.

When Bradley and Jake eventually move in together, Bradley finds about Jake’s musical talent. He learns new songs playing by ear because he can’t read sheet music and sometimes struggles to find the right note.

„This song is written in C minor, Bradley. Try with G and then E flat.“

I love this headcanon because it gives Jake so much depth not related to flying and has great angst!potential.

And I'm so jealous of the way you manage to draw hands, and also your lineart!!! Absolutely stunning! May I ask which program you use for your work? And also: do you have any good pointers on how to draw hands and fingers? A Pinterest post or a tutorial on YouTube (and, of course, practice, but I'm not getting anywhere...)

Now, hands… hands are literally my worst enemy so I’m glad you think they look good because boy do I struggle :’)

I’m not at my computer right now, so I’ll do my best to explain.

The best thing that I do is find really good references (Pinterest is good, but I find taking pictures of your own hands is better because you can get the exact position) and trace the shapes until you have a better understanding of how to draw them. Kind of like this:

I think if you just focus on getting the basic shapes down at first and then worry about the details later! (I tend to get hung up on the details before the fundamentals because I have zero patience sometimes :’))

I would also recommend looking at some of the artists that inspire you, or do art that you really like, and see how they draw them! Don’t copy (obviously!), but do look at the way they stylise them.

I love looking at la_bordeliere’s art on twitter (they are a NSFW🔞 account so watch out for that!) and seeing how they stylise their hands makes their character’s more expressive is very inspiring to me!

I hope this helped in some way! I’m not great at explaining lol
