hot take: jere’s character was never “trashed” and him proposing wasn’t unrealistic. the whole second book is jere being annoyed and frustrated that belly keeps falling into conrad. every single POV from book 2 is basically him saying “i dont get why belly loves him more than me, i deserve her more”.
no, jere didnt cheat. but lets not act like jere was just sweet to belly all the time before they got into a relationship. jere does have a vindictive streak (both shown in the show and book). jere proposing after belly was ready to really end it was his last ditch effort to keep conrad from “winning”.

What people fail to understand (or they do but choose to ignore for the sake of their narrative) is that Jenny didn’t make Conrad “a good one” and Jeremiah “the bad one” suddenly on S3 — they just unfold into what they’ve always been!
From the get go the narrative tells you Conrad isn’t the person he is during Season 1 and 2, that his personality has changed to this somber and emotionally stoic person due to the circumstances that only he knew were unfolding in their lives and then gradually turned into a severe depression, later grief. But Season 3 Conrad is exactly the guy Conrad is. The one Belly feel in love with, the one Laurel speaks highly about, the mature one Steven always knew. Season 3 Conrad comes from him doing the work needed to heal himself and it’s the normal version of himself given everything.
Jeremiah was always the irresponsible brother, he’s always been the one that takes things less seriously. This is a fact. And this wouldn’t be a problem since he’s young – the main problem with him is that he allows his insecurities over Conrad be a definitive factor on his behavior, especially about Belly. The cracks on how him feeling less favorable than Conrad had made its appearance little by little — It’s always there in his relationship with Belly, how careless he was once he finally “got the girl” (over Conrad) only to realize he never truly did. For over 2 years, Jeremiah doesn’t do the healing that he needed to do over his parents, Susannah or Conrad. Jeremiah’s actions are motivated by insecurity and is the biggest reason for his downfall. And it’s a consequence of him not seeking the help he needed and just pilling everything on Belly or hoping that him “getting the girl” was enough to validate him as a person over his brother.
Conrad did the work and acknowledged his wrongdoings, he never made himself a victim. He accepted that he ruined things with Belly. Jeremiah does not. He blamed everyone else except for himself for how things went down.

in case my bonrad shippers need some hope today, never forget the scene in the last episode of season 2 which is so very clearly setting up the downfall of jellyfish. susannah writing the letters that are meant for their wedding day, the letters go crashing everywhere, would perfectly explain how jere, who in the books ends the wedding because he accidentally got the letter meant for conrad. and the letter was about belly. i just know jenny will not let me down!!!

IM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE SAYING THAT JEREMIAH IS “EASY” AND WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT A LOVE THAT’S “COMPLICATED”!! like tell me you didn’t read the books without telling me you didn’t read the books. the whole third book is belly struggling to be with jeremiah because they are fundamentally different people (lacie barone situation aside). its shown when conrad knows to get her sour patch kids and jere gets her swedish fish. jere and belly together are not easy either, jere gets so frustrated over such little things. and that’s the whole point. and that’s why it’s years before conrad and belly actually end up together after jere and belly dont get married. why they are friends who just send each other mail for years. yes its “toxic” now because they are TEENAGERS!!! like jesus christ yall its also not that deep and frankly i dont think its romanticizing anything. its dramatized yeah, but like its three teenagers dealing with love and grief like please get a grip
