Adjustable Fit Jacket: Design Notes
The original goal for this application was to understand how we could customize the fit of a typical tailored item. We focused on how to bond in a hidden component that would take a technical blazer from fitted to relaxed. The idea is that when you are commuting- whether it be by foot or bike- that you can unzip the bonded invisible zipper for more bi-swing movement.
We chose to make the vent out of mesh to increase breathability and bonded the new SRI Gold Reflective Graphic to keep the user visible.
If you haven’t yet, check out the first application video here.

👋👋👋
Our Digital Maker’s Manual begins today! Over the next two months, we’ll be letting you in on our Design Team’s R&D process for our newest release, the Individualization Collection, sharing inspiration and step-by-step guides for adding high-impact bonding applications to your apparel.
For those of you familiar with our application kits, this is similar—with the added bonus of step-by-step video content. All eight of the applications ladder up to one central theme: individualization.
Last summer, we spent a month diving into consumer research to identify a megatrend. This is it.
In a world that has access to such a saturated market of goods, individualization is the new status symbol. Consumers today are constantly looking for ways to differentiate themselves from the next person. Customization solves this desire for distinction and provides a more personalized experience. The creation and possession of highly individualized products, experiences, and features give consumers the sense that they are one of a kind, not one of many.
Follow along with #Bemis Makers Manual for weekly video how-tos, shots from our moodboard, and more. Enjoy!

Next up: our second application video. Watch to learn how to create molded support using bonding.
Using Sewfree® adhesive and High Recovery Adhesive®, we constructed a molded cup with aesthetic flair. This application delivers on both visual technology and customized fit. The solid maroon areas create more stability and support while the yellow areas can mold to the shape of the wearer, creating 360º support to encase breast movement.
Follow along this week for looks from the moodboard that inspired this.

Apparel, intimates, consumer electronics. No matter what you’re designing, there are ways to use adhesives to add structural support to designs. Our lingerie designers, in particular, loved this example, which made the inspiration moodboard for our Molded Support application.

Question to think about while designing: how do materials themselves create shape and offer support? Photos like this inspired our Molded Support application, which you can explore here.

Bemis opens Design Lab at Maxport Advanced R&D Facility in Hanoi

We’ve got news! This past November, we officially opened a Bemis Design Lab in Maxport Limited Vietnam’s Advanced R&D facility in Hanoi. Team members from our US and HK offices celebrated the occasion, which also marked more than two decades of collaboration between Bemis and Maxport.

This new design lab represents the next chapter in our partnership and continues our work to replace sewing with bonding. It will sync the efforts of Bemis’ and Maxport’s brightest R&D minds, providing a shared space to partner with the world’s great brands to inspire, innovate, and develop new Sewfree® product and manufacturing opportunities. By collaborating, we also increase the capacity to integrate more Sewfree in to product lines for new customers, while elevating the level of service for the brands that already trust us with the development of their lines, season after season. We think it’s a win-win-win.
For more on the opening, check out this coverage.

Wonder what articles are circulating our Design Lab? Take a look at this one from StyleZeitgeist’s Eugene Rabkin, who asks if the future of fashion will be driven by men? He, in part, credits streetwear for mens’ takeover, writing, “The largest development here is the acceptance of streetwear into the mainstream of designer fashion.”
For the full take, click here. And for our take on men’s, mark your calendar for January 2019. 😏

Earlier this month we were in New York City with our partners at DYNE to watch them debut their SS19 collection. The venue, Industria Studios, also happened to be home to the CFDA’s 2018 Fashion Future Graduate Showcase, which highlights the work of the top 50 design graduates from across the country. Included in that group was Jennifer Wang.
Months ago, Jennifer reached out to us about product samples for her senior Fashion Design thesis at California College of the Arts. Little did we know then that her work would be among the best in the US. Take a look at some more of her line, Antidote’s stunning, minimalist designs:

When we asked Jennifer about her reasons for including Sewfree®, she said: “Having bonded seams and details in my thesis collection was something I really sought after to achieve an ultra-minimal surface look and pared-down construction approach. The Sewfree tapes worked especially beautifully to create a seamless, paper-like finish in the outerwear, allowed me to bond zippers directly to the fabric for a clean taped-on look, and made the spandex knit pieces appear like a second skin on the body.” Fresh out of school, she already sounds like a pro to us.
For more of her work and the creative process that went into Antidote, check out Jennifer’s IG here. And to explore other designers at the CFDA showcase, visit the CFDA website here.

It’s been a year since we re-launched Sewfree® to the intimates market worldwide at Interfilière in Shanghai. Our first bonded collection, Lingerie to Live in featured best-in-class bonded processes and products designed to deliver impeccable fit, breathability, and all-day comfort to today’s millennial consumer. This year, we were back — well, kind of — to show what else Sewfree can do.
Although our team didn’t attend the show, Bemis was still well represented. We partnered with two authorities in the intimates market: Concepts Paris and Sanko to create another collection of never-done-before intimates. From bodysuits and basics to cropped pants and enviable intimates, each piece beautifully combines trend and technique.
The collection was shown exclusively at Sanko’s booth, where we didn’t just debut bras and underwear, but a range of lingerie and lounge garments. As Jos Berry, founder and owner of Concepts Paris, and one of our style icons, said, “The lingerie market in its totality is too mono-product focused (bras) and starts to be sluggish. Comfort is key but it needs exciting developments in the core knitted underwear markets.” Using her team’s trend expertise to inform the pieces and styles in the collection, we tapped Sanko’s technical know-how as a cotton knitter and spinner to elevate the collection from a fabrics and textile perspective.
What resulted was a collection that delivers heavenly hand feel, beautiful drape, and uncompromising comfort —one that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible from a construction and conceptual standpoint. We’re proud to present it in tandem with these two powerhouse partners, who helped us prove that collaboration really is a beautiful thing.
Stay tuned for further Bemis collaborations with Sanko and Concepts Paris at Interfiliére Shanghai and NYC.

By now you know we love obsessing over detail like zippers. Before we get to the fun stuff, a design reminder: bonded zipper pulls are naturally more low-profile. They lay flat on the garment, so they’re less irritating than standard pulls, especially when zipped all the way up. These zipper pulls, in particular, make use of Reflective Films and provide another place to add branding, customization, and visibility.
Another upside: our wide range of adhesives makes this idea easily adoptable for outerwear, casualwear, and other applications.

Our next bonded concept is simple, yet practical. It provides an efficient, easy solution for seamlessly and discretely setting in a standard zipper. The hero of this sleek application: Aesthetic Functional Film. Use it to reinforce the slit opening while maintaining a low profile to hide and protect the zipper teeth.

Next application up: a bonded toggle.
Toggles on parkas and pockets owe their fame to the duffel coat, which was popularized by the British Royal Navy in the late 19th century. History has it that the toggle fastenings were chosen because they were easier to fasten and unfasten with gloves on than buttons.
Our Sewfree® update is a modern twist. By backing and reinforcing the body fabric to create a catch for the toggle, bonding allows for a functional alternative to the conventional trim. Plus, it lays flatter and requires fewer materials.
The functional aesthetic film reinforcements provide a clean finish over bar tacks anchoring the toggle cord.

When we talk about using Sewfree® to amp aesthetic, this is what we mean. This application method creates a multi-faceted finish to an otherwise simple product.
Creating cutouts with a textured release paper allows endless possibilities for aesthetic interest and creates a functional solution for covering the dull reverse side of a material.
