an underrated motif in Animorphs is the quiet marveling in connection with our very ancient ancestors, and at the connections throughout humanity. and it so often and seamlessly connects us as a part of nature, as humans are animals too.

they say good sci-fi should make you contemplate humanity and Animorphs legitimately does that so well in a dozen ways.

the thing about animorphs that i keep thinking about is that it genuinely did the "this character has been dead since the beginning" better than i have ever seen before, with tom

because !! god !! correct me if i'm wrong here, but i don't think jake talked to tom- actual tom- a single time through the entire series. we saw him, briefly, in the first book, when the gang tried to free prisoners from the yeerk pool and failed, but they were all hiding their identities, so they didn't actually talk to anyone!

and from that point on, jake only ever saw controller tom, over and over and over again. and then he died!! and he was still a controller when he died!!

when i started to suspect that tom was going to die by the end, i assumed that jake would get a Moment with his actual brother- meaningful eye contact, or a quiet apology, or. something. but there was none of that. tom died, and jake was on another ship.

we don't know exactly when tom was infested, but it was at some point before the series started, which means that, by the time Rachel killed him, tom had been dead for at least three years.

there was nothing jake could do. his brother had already been dead for years.
