Thee list to end all lists hits the streets tomorrow Saturday 1/1/22  - provided one of the FFFBs don’t end up with a positive C-19 rapid test, which is highly likely btw given their penchant for socializing irresponsibly. ✰ BEST REASONS TO WRITE FUCKIN’ RECORD REVIEWS IN 2020 ✰    

We know. 2020 has been some hella disaster of a year. But FRR looks at it like this: there’s always hope on the other side of the post-apocalyptic haze, because…we make it so! To that end, we’re thankful our brains are hardwired to value the combustible sonic arts in all their multifarious forms because such experiences provide the lift, moment to moment, minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day, month to month to get us through. FRR can only hope you enjoy the same spark. 

If it hasn’t been a good year for democratic civilization (although the fallout of that remains to be seen, of course, as such failings tend to inspire worthwhile progressive activism), it certainly has been an outlandishly superb 365 days  for sound-as-art…and FRR ain’t shy about sharing these *Best Reasons To Write Fuckin’ Record Reviews In 2020*! The list this year is looonnggg. The usual reader complaints and indignation aside, please hear us out. We’re information junkies and three factors contributed to the outrageous length of this year’s ‘Best Reasons’ list.

First, as noted above *it’s been an astoundingly great year for sounds* (pay attention!). Second, the pandemic fallout was such that it allowed far more listening time than during previous years - working from home, little to no socializing, and, to fill up the psychological and physical space, we leaned heavily into the field recordings, sound art, electronic and techno adjacent domains for maximum fulfillment. 

Third, well, this might seem kinda random, but let’s talk about…bandcamp emails. There’re too damn many! Having said that, we actually did sign up for those emails, i.e., we chose to follow the artists and labels who send them and consequently, just about every one of the 5000+ emails we received in 2020 included info about artists and labels we actually wanna hear from. It’s our kinda bubble. The information accruing from such an agreement certainly piles up, maybe unopened, but given such particulars, it shouldn’t go unnoticed that it’s almost impossible to throw a dart at any 25 electronic mail notices and have 24 of them contain info - that is, links to worthwhile music - we wanna know about. That may be the downside to FRR’s obsessive information junkie nerd orientation - there’s way too much information - but that’s how we discovered and became immersed in such great labels - and the interconnections between the artists on these labels - like Flaming Pines (UK), Bloxham Tapes (UK), Dinzu Artefacts (US), SUPERPANG (Italy), Linear Obsessional (UK), Scum Yr Earth (France), Le Syndicat Des Scorpions (France), Fort Evil Fruit (Ireland), Maple Death (UK), Stroom.TV (Belgium), B.F.E. (Spain), Commando Vanessa (Italy)…    

Furthermore, according to FRR’s counting, Feeding Tube Records bestowed upon us 81 physical releases this year!  If you’re wondering, why does FRR dig *that* Feeding Tube release and not *this* one, it’s possibly because we didn’t hear it. Same goes for No Rent Records (36 releases in the year that was 2020), SUPERPANG (39), Longform Editions (24), Clean Feed (29, slow year for them actually), NoBusiness Records (Lithuanian free jazz label, 26), Fundacja Słuchaj (Polish jazz label, 28), Intakt Records (Irène Schweizer’s long running and unbeatable Swiss avant jazz label (19), Room40 (Australian sound art label with 68 releases this year!!), Astral Spirits (27)… you get the idea.  Every one of these labels (and so many more) releases music from worthwhile artists FRR really digs, so the belief one can keep up, so to speak, is folly. But for an information junkie/music geek, the possibility that there’s another impossibly great reason to write a fuckin’ record review right around the corner is…totally intoxicating. 

So those are some reasons why this year’s list is stupidly long. But here’s another and it’s possibly the most important: every damn entry on this list sparked a tiny explosion in the FRR circuitry whereby, usually within the first minute, FRR was emotionally moved. There’s a magic to these recordings that affects us beyond comprehension, as with the best art: a combination of our own hardwiring + the music’s ability to inspire, engage, and create forward excitement...y’know, kinda like being in love. That’s what the Best Reasons To Write Fuckin’ Record Reviews In 2020 (and every year) represents 😍

“Oh yeah, the 1987 reader’ poll…The results are hardly surprising in that the majority of ‘faves’ pretty much paralleled my band coverage…I haven’t ruled out doing one for 1989, so who knows, maybe you’ll see it again in just a couple of months. Except for the ‘worst’ sections…the most I could get out of it was that a lot of people hated Hüsker Dü and Laibach, but jeez, I already knew that. That’s right, if you’re paying attention, The Pope’s 1987 readers’ poll (in Issue 3) was reported two years later, in 1989 (Issue 4)! That’s the kinda patience we had back in them pre-world wide web days. Was it a virtue? Does it matter? If FRR doesn’t get 50 likes within the hour of posting this, we’re gonna melt! Times, they have indeed changed.

What hasn’t changed is the quality rankings of 1987’s best sub-underground rock bands. I mean, they were sub-underground then, now of course, we all know them as our beloved faves who (nearly) all crossed over into corporate superstar status in the 90s, thereby legitimizing our cultural affiliations, right?! 🤷🏽‍♂️ Damn, that was 25-30 years and many tears ago!! The dream of the 90s is alive at FRR.

FRR is fairly certain we submitted our poll rankings and mailed ‘em off to wherever Mr. Adams was attending college at the time (Notre Dame? Northwestern? I forget). By the time of Issue 4, Tim was living in Chicago.

This was the last issue of The Pope (yes?), as Tim went on to fame as the proprietor of Ajax Records, an excellent Chicago based label and sometime record store that existed from 1987 until 1999.  As we wrote previously at FRR, “In addition to editing The Pope, Tim Adams was the proprietor of Ajax Records, an excellent Chicago based label and sometime record store that existed from 1987 until 1999. He also operated the Ajax Records Catalog, a reliable and totally worthwhile catalog of mostly independent heads. This 1998 story by [Butt Rag’s] Peter Margasak tells part of the tale.”

Bob Bannister continues to be an encyclopedic source of approachable and discerning criticism at Goodreads (and other places), where he reviews more books in a single year than the rest of us will ever hold in our hands again. 
Bob was also the guitar and songwriting kingpin in FIRE IN THE KITCHEN, conjured outré psych as TONO-BUNGAY, plays guitar in P.G. SIX and ESCAPE BY OSTRICH with former members of The SCENE IS NOW and is currently working with the indomitable ROSE THOMAS BANNISTER.

Seems there are a lot bands named Fire In The Kitchen in the world. Bob’s FITK was a NYC fixture in the late 80’s and early 90’s, a great one at that, fronted by Bob and drummer Robert Dennis, who, as partially noted above, continue to play together in the 20teens in Escape By Ostrich and The Scene Is Now, as well as others.

FIRE IN THE KITCHEN review by Gerard Cosloy from page 22 of Conflict 51 (Fall 1990): “If Fire In The Kitchen came in at the tail end of new wave, they’d be as popular as, oh, say the Rumour. If they held their breath for five years, they’d be twice as big…Oh, almost forgot, Television, MX-80 Sound, Slovenly, Hate Dogs (I hope this looks nice in a press kit).” 

FRANKLIN BRUNO! The man lives in Queens, NY and is still working his excellent craft in 2020 with The HUMAN HEARTS. 

The band’s most recent long player seems to be Another (2012), although Bruno has certainly performed more recent compositions since then. He details his daily process here (updated as of 4/2/20!)

Bruno also operates a detailed website chronicling his work since the mid-1980s.

Clearly Franklin Bruno has committed himself to many worthy endeavors during the past 35+ years, including writing one of those 33 1/3 books for Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces!

LOU BARLOW! Well, we all know Lou’s been pretty active with the resurrected Dinosaur, jr since the mid 00s, as well as a reconstituted Sebadoh. 

His stand alone website loobiecore still exists, although it’s hard to know if it’s been updated since 2004. 

But who needs stand alone sites when you got a Sebadoh Instagram?

Some more recent and excellent Shrimper Records releases (Refrigerator, Shrimper proprietor Dennis Callaci, Simon Joyner, et al) continue to be  distributed by Grapefruit.   

It’s great to know these three men - Bannister, Bruno, and Barlow - are still around and making great contributions to our weird and freaked out world in 2020.

Like it sez on The Wiki (original lynx intact), “The Chesterfield Kings were a rock band from Rochester, New York, who began as a retro-1960s garage band, and who have heavily mined 1960s music, including some borrowing from the 1960s recordings of The Rolling Stones. Core members were former Distorted Level singer, underground music journalist and avid record collector Greg Prevost (founder of the band), and Andy Babiuk (16 years old at the time of joining the band); others have come and gone. The band, named after a defunct brand of unfiltered cigarette, was instrumental in sparking the 1980s garage band revival...”  

Future Chesterfield King GREG PREVOST, lifted from his website: “Me, 1965 with my cousin Debbie and sister Deana. This was taken during one of the great 'family trips' my father took us on-we'd go with my uncle and cousins. I think this was either Washington DC or Montreal ... My cousin Denny would always bring his 'G.E. Wildcat' portable record player and we'd crank the Stones (which is why I have my Stones album in the shot above), Yardbirds and Kinks when our parents went down to the hotel lounge for the evening...” 

We know what you may be thinking...In 2020 The Chesterfield Kings might not exactly register with you younginz who exalt second, third,  fourth, or fifth gen 6Tz punk scuzz like The Gories or The Oblivions or The Nots or Miranda & The Beat or Teengenerate or whowhatwhichever. But you’d be wrong...

Back in the very early 8Tz, US bands with members who lived through the original sixties experience as well as having punched it out during the ‘76 - ‘78 punk era - bands like the Chesterfield Kings, Lyres, Pandoras, Miracle Workers, Plan 9, et al - really infused the initial MTV nu-romantic synth era with a genuine alternate guttural boom boom that rubbed up nicely against the post-hardcore heavy weird of Touch & Go and SST bands, the freak scenesters on Homestead, and Aussie Birthday Party/Scientist miners.  Keep in mind that the first Chesterfield Kings record Here Are The Chesterfield Kings was issued in 1983, the year that Tim Warren issued the very first Back From the Grave comp. So...seeing a band destroy “The Hustler” live around that time was a revelatory experience.

Of course, there was a quick proliferation of bands aping every aspect of sixties paisley topography between 1982 and 1985 (hello “Raspberry Beret”), so separating the wheat from the chaff was best left to the experts (as hinted at in Jimmy Johnson’s review above) and currently repped by...Fuckin’ Record Reviews!  

Chesterfield Kings’ main agitator Greg Prevost still oversees a totally fabulous website chronicling his history from elementary school through his zines, punk legends DISTORTED LEVELS and MEAN RED SPIDERS, on to the Chesterfield Kings and beyond. Great to see these stand-alone site still in existence, though we wonder how long these things will last. Soak it up while you can.

 Greg ‘Stackhouse’ Prevost has issued two solo records since - Mississippi Murderer in 2012 and Universal Vagrant  in 2016...both are available on bandcamp and Spotify

The Chesterfield Kings’ ANDY BABIUK has most recently played with The EMPTY HEARTS alongside guys with names like Elliot Eason (The Cars), Clem Burke (Blondie) and Wally Palmar (The Romantics). Their 2020 seven inch also includes drumming by Ringo Starr.  We all get by with a little help from our friends...Take that COVID-19!!

As is taught in elementary schools across the United States these days, GALAXIE 500 broke up in 1991 around the same time as the Soviet Union. In the 30 years since Jimmy Johnson wrote this fuckin’ record review, a few things have happened: 

DEAN WAREHAM formed LUNA in 1991, who wrapped up activities in 2005, but then reformed around 2015.  The band will be touring the USA and Canada in 2020!

Dean also consolidated forces with ex-Luna bandmate Britta Phillips for DEAN & BRITTA. One of the things they do is write soundtracks for well regarded movies like The Squid and the Whale.  Dean can be found in 2019 at deanwareham.com.

GALAXIE 500 drummer DAMON KRUKOWSKI and bassist NAOMI YANG  joined with FRR heroes WAYNE ROGERS and KATE BIGGAR to form MAGIC HOUR (1993-1996), but have made excellent dream pie recordings as DAMON & NAOMI since 1992.  They also operate Exact Change Press, which “...publishes books of experimental literature with an emphasis on Surrealism, Dada, Pataphysics, and other nineteenth and twentieth century avant-garde art movements.”

Today can be found in 2019 at the Galaxie 500 bandcamp page, among other places.

Here’s what exists at ZineWiki: “Your Flesh is a zine founded by Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü), Ron Clark, and Peter Davis in 1981. Davis acquired the rights to it for $100. The first issue was limited to 50 copies, photocopied and stapled. By 1987, the magazine boasted full color covers. For a while, it was published in Seattle by Fantagraphics Books. Early issues of Your Flesh were devoted to the hardcore-punkcommunity, with articles on bands like Die Kreuzen, Discharge, MDC, DOA, and, of course, Hüsker Dü. In the late-1980’s and early 1990’s, Your Fleshcharted the growth of what came to be known as “grunge.” Over time, the zine expanded its coverage beyond music to focus on other aspects of “fringe culture,” including underground comics and literature (which it termed “outlaw art”). Later issues were perfect bound, averaging 120 pages in length.”

CHRONOPHAGE Prolog For Tomorrow (Cleta Patra 🇺🇸 2019)

Fungus Brains inspired stumble-trumpet welcomes us on the first track (“Racing”) and, immersed as it is in percipient drummer boy snare rolling and hooked out twin tone song excellence, it just gets better from there. Wish Human Switchboard would’ve forked in this direction! Some’ll throw the messthetics tag, but that doesn’t suggest Chronophage’re masquerading as the Digital Dinosaurs or something, as such ain’t the case: the ‘messthetics’ feelz speak to the inspiring originality exhibited on all fronts, and for that we should all be thankful. This is an instant classic.

From The Bottom Of The Earth To The Top Of The Wazir (Altered States Tapes 12” comp 🇦🇺 2018)

As anyone can read in our list of BEST REASONS TO WRITE FUCKIN’ RECORD REVIEWS IN 2018, we finally came ‘round and got all 😍 with Australia’s Altered States Tapes. This comp is a cross section of the delirious garbage can tronix on offer over the years. Most cuts glow as if inhabited by the primitive electron thump of Orchestra Of Skin And Bone, as much they wrap themselves in the topography of Detroit click clack handclaps...OIL and TREVOR and Lucy Cliché (aka LOOSE-Y CRUNCHÉ aka Lucy Phelan from Naked On The Vague) are comp faves, but all deliver a satisfyingly corrosive rhumba with their own personal devils.
