"Comet Fever
By one blue gleaming the sidewalk crawls with water. I listen to chatter and squeaks. Most of it’s past.
Beyond my snug embrasure except that lamp, night hides. I watch what no one watches. Sleep has taken all.
Unblinking star, I used to home only as the row of them went out. Then snuffed I as suddenly. That was awhile ago.
Suburbanite's sentinel, catching nothing night after night, not even cats: rain and wind quicken you. But I glare unchanged.
Out of a measured labor where days cycle blind I stepped to become a fiction as one leaves a car
that no longer runs by the side of the road. The pavement's sheen is twinkling. With a rush, the cataract resumes."

“Franklin Bruno…the kind of very disciplined and productive guy who writes three songs before breakfast…classic pop…”

“Lou Barlow…the music is cathartic in quite the opposite of the usual way…Sebadoh/Sentridoh’s music is so introverted that it’s more like they’re having the catharsis and you’re listening in sympathy.”

BRUNO/BARLOW cassette reviews by BOB BANNISTER

ON SITE #10 May 1991 (pages 31-32) BOB BANNISTER, Editor
Previously on Fuckin’ Record Reviews…
Bob Bannister continues to be an encyclopedic source of approachable and discerning criticism at Goodreads (and other places), where he reviews more books in a single year than the rest of us will ever hold in our hands again.
Bob was also the guitar and songwriting kingpin in FIRE IN THE KITCHEN, conjured outré psych as TONO-BUNGAY, plays guitar in P.G. SIX and ESCAPE BY OSTRICH with former members of The SCENE IS NOW and is currently working with the indomitable ROSE THOMAS BANNISTER.
Seems there are a lot bands named Fire In The Kitchen in the world. Bob’s FITK was a NYC fixture in the late 80’s and early 90’s, a great one at that, fronted by Bob and drummer Robert Dennis, who, as partially noted above, continue to play together in the 20teens in Escape By Ostrich and The Scene Is Now, as well as others.
FIRE IN THE KITCHEN review by Gerard Cosloy from page 22 of Conflict 51 (Fall 1990): “If Fire In The Kitchen came in at the tail end of new wave, they’d be as popular as, oh, say the Rumour. If they held their breath for five years, they’d be twice as big…Oh, almost forgot, Television, MX-80 Sound, Slovenly, Hate Dogs (I hope this looks nice in a press kit).”
FRANKLIN BRUNO! The man lives in Queens, NY and is still working his excellent craft in 2020 with The HUMAN HEARTS.
The band’s most recent long player seems to be Another (2012), although Bruno has certainly performed more recent compositions since then. He details his daily process here (updated as of 4/2/20!)
Bruno also operates a detailed website chronicling his work since the mid-1980s.
Clearly Franklin Bruno has committed himself to many worthy endeavors during the past 35+ years, including writing one of those 33 1/3 books for Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces!
LOU BARLOW! Well, we all know Lou’s been pretty active with the resurrected Dinosaur, jr since the mid 00s, as well as a reconstituted Sebadoh.
His stand alone website loobiecore still exists, although it’s hard to know if it’s been updated since 2004.
But who needs stand alone sites when you got a Sebadoh Instagram?
Lou also records solo records for Joyful Noise Recordings, with lotsa swell swag there too.
Lou at bandcamp.
Some more recent and excellent Shrimper Records releases (Refrigerator, Shrimper proprietor Dennis Callaci, Simon Joyner, et al) continue to be  distributed by Grapefruit.
It’s great to know these three men - Bannister, Bruno, and Barlow - are still around and making great contributions to our weird and freaked out world in 2020.

February 1995 issue of The Middle East Monthly, the calendar listings publication of Cambridge, MA rock club The Middle East.
While the previous post’s Middle East flyer showed the rock club moving into the desktop publishing age, this one has evolved into an actual publication, complete with articles, display ads from other local businesses and... a center spread featuring the extensive menu of the Middle East Restaurant attached to the club. Of course the articles are just another form of PR for each of the profiled bands, all playing that month. But, hey, you could have said the same about any number of “proper” music publications littering the media landscape in the mid-90s.
Again, in this calendar we’re treated to an embarrassment of riches in the form of gee-I-really-wish-I-went-to-those gigs. Among the offerings:
Feb 2nd: Gigolo Aunts / Throwing Muses — The order seems to imply that Gigolo Aunts were the headliner, and that can’t possibly be correct. Honestly, is this bill even correct? Throw in former Tribe front-woman Janet LaValley and a couple of minor local bands and... you have one mess of a lineup.
Feb 10th: Magic Hour / Strapping Fieldhands / Tono Bungay — aka the weird psych-drone freak gig. Am I talking about the bands or the audience? You guess.
Feb 11th: New Bomb Turks / Gaunt / Showcase Showdown / Fat Day — Not only were most of my fellow college radio DJs at this show, some of them were in the first two bands. Not really my music, but it’s the kind of thing now that I’d totally catch live.
Feb 16th: Blonde Redhead — While I did catch them live during their prime shoegaze phase, I really wish I could’ve seen ‘em when they were way noisier.
Feb 17th: Spectrum and Air Miami — Weird bill. Again, two acts I like, but for very different reasons. I did not go to this show, perhaps because I remained haunted by the memory of an absolutely terrible Air Miami performance the year before where bassist Bridget was terribly drunk.
Feb 28th: Sportsguitar / Azalia Snail / Syrup — This, on the other hand, is a very complementary bill. Strong local support there with Seana of Swirlies’ then-new band (Syrup, later Syrup USA).
Finally, thank you to Groovasaurus (Feb 17th), (Shootyz Groove (Feb 18th) and Skavoovie & the Epitones (Feb 21st) for naming their bands in such a clear and obvious stay-the-hell-away-from-me manner.

This piece puzzles me because it is hard for me not to see the anti-white propaganda pouring out of the NY Times and the Wash Post and other places, like the Atlantic magazine, as originating in some unwholesome Jewish-black alliance.  All the unhappy, angry, resentful black opinion writers on the Times and Post pages don’t arrive there by magic.  Some people really want to give them a bullhorn, and those same people obviously don’t care at all about white America.  So I think, with all respect to Mr. Derbyshire, that the depths of this phenomenon have not yet been illuminated.

Quote
And what is business in the lump? It is hiring land from landlords and spare money from capitalists, and employing the hungry to make enough money out of them day by day to pay the wages for their keep and bring in a profit as well. Astonishing fortunes can be made in this way by men and women with the necessary ability and decision who have the particular sort of pecuniary keenness and pertinacity that business requires. Even more staggering profits are made sometimes by accident, the business man hitting by chance on something new that the public happens to fancy. Millions are made by medicines which injure people's health instead of improving it (read Tono-Bungay), and hair restorers that leave the buyer as bald as before. Articles that nobody needs, and sham pleasure that give only fatigue and boredom at extravagant prices, are advertized and advertized until people are beglamored into thinking they cannot do without them.

THACKERAY, William M.
British novelist and journalist (1811-1863)
Until the success of Vanity Fair, when he was 36, Thackeray earned his living as a journalist and cartoonist (especially for Punch magazine) and as a humorous lecturer. His first intention in his novels was to write satirical biographies', letting the reader discover the follies of the world at the same time as his naive young heroes and heroines. But the characters took over, and his books now seem more genial and affectionate than barbed. He invented characters as grotesque as Dickens, caricatures of human viciousness or folly, but he wrote of them with a kind of disapproving sympathy, a fellowfeeling for their humanity, which Dickens lacks. Humbug, ambition and the seven deadly sins are Thackeray's subjects -- and so are friendship, kindness and warm-heartedness. At a time when many English novels were more like sermons, clamorous for reform, he wrote moral comedies, showing us what fools we are.
VANITY FAIR  (1847) The book interweaves the lives of two friends, gentle Amelia and calculating, brilliant Becky Sharp. Becky is an impoverished orphan determined to make her fortune; Amelia believes in love, marriage and family life. Each of them marries; Amelia's husband has an affair with Becky, and dies at Waterloo with her name on his lips; Becky's husband finds her entertaining a rich, elderly admirer and abandons her. In the end, each girl gets what she longed for, but not in the way she hoped. Amelia, after ten years pining for her dead husband, is cruelly told by Becky of his infidelity, and turns for comfort to a kind man who has worshipped her from afar, and who now offers her marriage, a home and all the comforts of obscurity. Becky's son inherits his father's money and gives her an annuity on condition that she never speaks to him again; we see her at the end of the book, queening it in Bath, an idle, rich member of the society she has always aspired to join and whose values Thackeray sums up in the title of the book.
Thackeray's other books include Pendennis (the story of a selfish young man, spoilt by his mother, who goes to London to make his fortune as a writer) and its sequel The Newcomes, Henry Esmond and its sequel The Virginians, and a number of shorter tales and stories including Barry Lyndon, The Great Hoggarty, Diamond and the spoof fairy-tale The Rose and the Ring.

Well, not only do you get the kinda heavy angle-rock...but you also get soupy lowfi electrodrone/tapeloop that makes the air inside your head quite spuzzy... and plenty of post-Ash Ra heavy psych swirl...”
