Winter. Proper Cold.
“That icicle is the size of a baby’s finger.” – Guy ‘Verine Guy was talking about an icicle that had grown on my moustache. I had been out running husky tours all morning and the warmth of my breath escaping my mouth had turned to ice on my moustache and beard in the -25C air. It wasn’t a pretty sight, but was a good indication of the environment that I am working in this winter. That morning had…

A Cold Day During A Warm Winter.
Today was another cold day amongst some rather warm December weather. I know it is my first winter in Lapland, but apart from a handful of days the temperature hasn’t dropped below -10C very often. It didn’t get much above -20C today, and I definitely felt it. I started the day by getting up just before 7am so that I could get dressed in warm clothes to feed the horses. My thermometer told me it…

The Farm. An Easy Day.
This morning my alarm woke me up at 6:50am. I stayed in my sleeping bag liner in my sleeping bag while shuffling to the end of my bed. I then stood up in my sleeping bag and reached around the back of the heater to turn the gas on, then lit the ignition light and waited for the gas to start burning on it’s own. Once it was going, I made my way back onto my bed and tried to snuggle into a warm…

Return to the Farm.
So I just spent half an hour writing a post about my arrival and the past two weeks, complete with photos and captions, when I somehow managed to erase it all before it had saved. This now makes it hard to find motivation to write much about returning to the farm. However, the main purpose of this blog was meant to be showing Mum and Dad some photos of my living arrangements. So there will be a…

Helsinki. November.
This morning I was up at a reasonable time, and I decided that I would take a trip to Tallinn, Estonia. I had some vegemite on toast for breakfast, got a few things organised, had a quick chat to my host then headed out. I caught the metro into town, then walked to the ferry terminal. I arrived at 11:30, just in time to watch the massive ferry that I was supposed to catch cast off. I had missed…

Call of the Wild. Jack London.
I recently read Call of the Wild by Jack London for the second time. I bought it again to leave behind in the hope that my friends could read it and think of me. I gave it to my friend Josh, who asked me what I liked about the book. I didn’t really know how to answer, because I hadn’t really thought much about it, I just knew I had enjoyed reading it. After a little thought I told him that I…

Camping. Mt Warning.
Recently we had a long weekend in Australia, which meant that my friends with Monday to Friday jobs had enough time to enjoy a couple days of camping. A trip to Mt Warning was planned, camping in Murwillumbah for a couple of nights with the purpose of climbing the mountain for the sunrise. During winter it is believed to be the first point on the Australian coast to see the sun, which has led to…

Wales. Brecon Beacons.

A couple of days ago I did a walk in Brecon Beacons National Park with Irma and Jay. The park is in southern Wales, and as I had only spent a few hours driving through Wales before I was keen to explore a new country. The day started a bit later than we had planned, and we only left Bournemouth at 10:30. We drove for a couple of hours until we needed a toilet and drinks break, followed in another…
