Some differences to contrast practises / techniques Mahayana Buddhist Samatha, Vipassana & Kundalini Yoga
Samatha - Calm Abiding, Mindfulness of Breath
    - work with what is there, what arises, what is (in present moment)
    - origination: buddhism (sakya, kagu), influences: zen
    - acknowlege, do not seek to influence (as in leave only footprints
visiting a protected nature reserve)
    - some people practise for years and little happens
    - posture is neutral and loose (half/full lotus), higher chakra
subtle mudras (locks) engaged hands, tongue
    - emaphasis on
acknowlegement and letting go (non grasping) - thoughts, sounds, memory,
emotion, physical sensations that arise
breath, natural rythmic deep breathing, no breath retention
encourages clarity, stillness, sharpness - control of mind,
clear focus, improves memory
mahayana (greater vehicle), dedication of merit, setting of
intention
Vipassana - Insight, Observation
    - directed enquiry into nature of what arises (in present moment)
    - practised in tandem with commitment to moral (not causing harm)
behaviour
    - how does it feel, what is its nature, what conditions / causation?
    - introspect mind body complex in systematic manner
    - non-commerical
Kundalini - active, channeled awakening
specific techniques breath (prana), posture (asana), chanting
(mantra), locks (mudra)
body (physical & subtle) focus, chakra energy centre based
channel sexual energies, orgasmic impluse from moolahdra perennium /
(swadisthana) seat of self
breath timing and retention (kumbhaka) on inhalation (antara) & post
exhale (bahya)
promotes trancendence of individual genderised self, to realise divine
universal cosmic forces in nature
aim to blissful union of feminine (shakti) and male (shiva) energies
experience of architypal respository of memory, sensation, sound
possibility to activate siddhis including experience of
clairvoyance, telepathy, multiple self, universe
    - tendancy for excess energy to be generated that must be channeled
    - can fix imbalances - appetite, motivation, fear / anxiety, intro/extrovertedness
- prerequisites, preliminaries, qualification requirements, application, suitability, risks?
