Laurens/Hamilton interactions in the show

I had the privilege of seeing Hamilton on Broadway last week and because I am Lams trash, here are all the observations I made about Laurens and Hamilton’s interactions. I’m going to post other observations from the show as well. Keep in mind that some of this is my own interpretations, which may or may not be slightly biased… (comes with the shipping)

But I can say this, and this is just fact; pretty much every number they’re in together, they are touching in one way or another. If they’re within two feet of each other, you can bet they’re gonna shake hands/grab shoulders/hug etc.

My Shot - When Hamilton first meets Laurens, Lafayette and Mulligan, it’s really like a high school scene. He’s trying to get on the popular kids’ squad and convince them that he’s cool and has important ideas. When he starts with “Imma get a scholarship to Kings College” Laurens looks seriously impressed from the start, more so than the others.   By the time Hamilton and Laurens sings the first refrain of “My shot” together, he’s already won him over. When the hamilsquad makes their introductions, Lafayette and Mulligan are standing by their table, while Laurens stands with Hamilton in the center, puts his hand on Ham’s shoulder and addresses his “You and I, do or die” towards him.  

The part where Alex goes “Oh, am I talking to loud, sometimes I get over excited”, is absolutely amazing!! You really get the feeling that he’s so eager to be a part of these guys’ group that he gets caught up in his own efforts to impress them. Then he suddenly catches himself and gets quite self conscious, like, shit what if I came on too strong, what if I messed up! Which is something I think a lot of people can identify with. And then Laurens (damn I love him) gets up on the table, looks down at Hamilton and goes “Let’s get this guy in front of a crowd”. And it honestly feels like it’s more about reassuring Alex that he’s already a part of their group and that there’s no need to ever apologize or worry about disappointing them. 

The Story of Tonight - This entire number is veerry lams. At the end, they walk out smiling with their arms around each other (think Enjolras and Grantaire in the 25:th) Satisfied - At the end of Helpless/beginning of Satisfied, Eliza and Ham are kissing, a pretty long, intense kiss. And THEN, Laurens literally jumps in between them with his “Alright, alriiiight” Like, stop making out in front of me you heartless bastard! The Story of Tonight - All I can say is lams is pretty much glued together at the hip throughout this song. Also, the foursome’s dynamic is really awesome. 

Stay Alive - Ugh, by this point they might as well hold hands and wear matching t-shirts that says I’m with stupid.

Ten Duel Commandments - Ok, this is an objective fact: from the moment when Laurens fires his gun, until Hamilton is called away to meet Washington, they are standing together with their hands and arms clasped, a few inches apart. That’s half a minute in the recording and probably longer in the actual show.

This number is fantastic btw, Laurens is so pumped up for the duel and after he shoots, Hamilton has to hold him back and then they hug when they realize they’ve won. When Ham goes to meet Washington inside, he lets go of Laurens and they exchange this look like shiit, you’re in trouble now, good luck, come back in one piece! Tomorrow There’ll Be More of Us/Laurens’ Death - Fuck, I cried! So, Ham is working when Eliza comes in with the letter from Laurens’ father. Then Laurens, dressed all in white, comes in and stands to the right with a spotlight on him, in the front of the stage. He sings The Story of Tonight, (and it’s heartbreakingly beautiful) while Eliza reads the letter to Ham. Laurens looks so happy and hopeful and idealistic and Anthony Ramos has the fucking nerve to smile when singing “Tomorrow there’ll be more of us” as Eliza reads “His dream of freedom for these men dies with him” And just as Alexander finds out that Laurens is dead, they both turn around and look at each other. Ham stares at him, looking completely devastated  and just… helpless.
