Big Four ALTA AU
(sorry toothless idk how to draw you)
This takes place after Anng disappeared, during the hundred years before he comes back again.
Rapunzel
Rapunzel was raised on a small northern island by her nonbender mother. Bring a water bender when the fire nation is hunting them down led to her never risking leaving her island.
At least that was the case up until a bit from an island south of her, and a boy with white hair just like her, show up and encourage her to chase her dream while she can. She goes on an adventure to go see the northern lights in person.
First she has to save the boy with the big dragon though. One of his legs is a badly bandaged stump. She has had white hair since she was a baby, it grew unnaturally quickly and her water bending could heal things beyond the normal scope. Scars, fatigue, wrinkles, all could be undone under her bending. It's why Mother told her she especially had to hide.
She intends to go home as soon as she's seen the lights, but then a red headed girl needs help getting home and Mother would understand. Right?
Hiccup
Hiccup lives on a remote archipelago that was colonized by the Fire Nation because hunting down dragons is an honor and a way to show your prowess.
Hiccup is a non-bender on an island full of powerful earth and fire benders. Because it's so far from the mainland, there is little influence from the fire nation government.
Hiccup is a skilled blacksmith and inventor. He didn't intend to befriend a dragon, it just kind of happened. Canon events follow, but Hiccup and Toothless fall into the ocean and Stoik never had the chance to tell him he was proud of him.
Hiccup is saved by a boy with shockingly white hair about his age. When they arrive on a small island northward, inhabited by small chameleon dragons, they meet Rapunzel and she heals the wound around his missing leg. Afterwards, Toothless takes her flying through the Northern Lights as thanks.
Hiccup doesn't think he has much of a home to go back to so he's fine with wandering with these two for a while.
Merida
Merida is an Earth Kingdom princess, a skilled archer, and a strong earth bender. She has come to understand her mother better after spirit world shenanigans.
She united her kingdom with the smaller territories to resist the Fire Nation. For now, the Fire Nation is focusing on the Water Nation, but they know that won't last long.
She is separated from her family when, sure enough, the Fire Nation attacks. They have a place they planned to go in case sometime like that happened. Merida sticks around a while in case her brothers were left behind but starts to head to their meet up place after a few days. It's about a month away. Or it was before she gets caught up in more spirit world shenanigans.
She ends up far north and meets the others. She's had it up to here with spirits and wisps and fate at this point. She steps into the woods and steps out in the snow.
The three that first see her offer to help get her home. The boy with white hair seemed especially sympathetic to the frustrations of dealing with the spirit realm.
Jack
Jack woke up one day as a spirit in the human realm. For a long time, he couldn't cross over to the human world. The other spirits wouldn't talk to him and while he could see the people around him, the didn't know he was there and walked right through them. He can bend both air and water and is very confused.
Finally, he managed to enter the mortal world. The first person he met? An unconscious boy and a very angry dragon. Jack, named by the moon spirit who then ignored him for 100 years, understood what it felt like not to belong anywhere so he invited Hiccup to travel with him. He wanted to see this world again now that he could touch and hold and eat.
Then he meets Rapunzel who has never had the chance to experience this world either and had some connection to the spirits that they never explained, and he understands that too. So he invites her to tag along. They'd have adventures and try to figure out what the spirits were thinking when they made(?) them. She turns him down. Until!
They meet a very very angry and very very frightened girl who just wants to make sure her family is safe. Jack knows what it is to be frightened and angry so the first stop on their world travels will be Omashu. Now Rapunzel will come with. She insists the world is dangerous and that she doesn't want to let her first friends traverse it alone.
Pattern appreciation! Because I spent hours doing all that pretend embroidery!

One of my favorite small details about ‘Brave’ is that the, well, brave and adventurous heroine, feels fear. We see Merida scared as a little kid, we see her feel fear on her adventure when she’s older— for example when she is quite literally about to be mauled by a giant bear (understandable).
This is so important to me. The fact Merida feels fear doesn’t negate her spirit and bravery. She’s human. As it is often said, bravery isn’t the lack of fear, but the perseverance through it.

Okay, hear me out.
Maybe the reason Jack gravitates to the guardians is because they remind him of the only friends he's had before. Or vise versa.
Toothina& Rapunzel: Colorful, kind, enthusiastic, importance of memories (if you told me the moon made Rapunzel tooth fairy, who guards important memories I would believe you. She motioned to tuck her hair behind her ear at one point and she doesn't have hair. Or ears? And Rapunzel remembering that mobile as a baby was a huge moment-)
Bunny&Merida: Unexpectedly creative, fierce fighters, quick to anger, stubborn, accent.
North& Hiccup: Creative, inventors, Northern European vibes, fur, communicates with creatures others can't understand, sees good things in unexpected places.
As a fandom, I think Jack fits so well with these characters because we've seen how he interacted with similar personalities in canon.

Yes yes yes all of this
Platonic dynamics I want to see more in the (tiny) Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons fandom:
Jack being like an older brother to Hiccup and sort of seeing an older version of Jamie in him and not scoffing at how nerdy he is ("holy crap you MADE this? Man show me how it works!!")
Rapunzel post-her-movie being all gung-ho and cheery, and Merida trying to get her to stop being so naïve, only for Rapunzel to calmly list all the ways she was betrayed and abused throughout her adventures (and you'd only have to go through the canon events of the movie and show to make this work, btw, girl's been through STUFF) and tells Merida she is upbeat and kind because she chooses to believe that most people are good, because so many people stuck with her through so much and so many people came back to her after betraying her. And Merida is like "well dang ok, wanna learn to shoot a bow"
Jack being calm, responsible, and protective of the others without becoming too angsty in the process- playing harmless little pranks to bring everyone's spirits up, that sort of thing
Merida being annoyed by Jack at first, but it's because she misses her brothers, not because she categorically dislikes the pranks. She tells Jack this and he asks her to join him doing pranks. She has much more fun after this.
Rapunzel is good at many things, but not so much inventing, as we see in TTS; her trying to assist Hiccup and him being good-natured about it but entirely accidentally outclassing her
Jack very deliberately keeping his past and loneliness to himself, and the others figuring out something's off because they never catch him sleeping, he's pensive when he's not interacting with them, he's got such wide and extensive experience, and he starts admitting bits and pieces like "I'm older than I look" etc etc
Jack never openly getting angry with the kids because they're kids and he's a Guardian, so instead when one of them is upset or trying to pick a fight with him, his staff will glow brighter or it'll get cloudier or windier or snowier- his magic responds, but Jack refuses to, making his calm all the more scary.
Jack being the first to realize Rapunzel has been through Stuff and sitting down with her when the other two are asleep "what happened to you?" entirely gently and patiently because HE'S A GOOD BIG BROTHER DANGIT I WANT THIS SIDE OF HIM TO SHOW MORE-
Hiccup worrying/getting upset/doing that I Have To Stand Alone thing and Rapunzel approaching him like "you're not the only one who grew up alone, you know. It's okay to rely on us, we won't let you down"
Hiccup doing the I Have To Stand Alone thing in general cause I don't see that a lot in crossovers or at least the arts
The others finding Jack in weird places because super-balance go brr
Jack being reluctant to touch any of the kids for any reason because he doesn't want to see the way they treat him change once they realize how cold and inhuman he really is
Merida recognizing Jack immediately as the only other obviously competent fighter by the way he moves (she was raised around all manner of warriors and guards, after all) and immediately setting about allying herself with him because Heaven knows they all need as much protection as they can get
Merida helping Hiccup to have a moment like he has in the HTTYD books where he realizes he's actually a really amazing swordfighter when he actually uses his dominant hand
Hiccup and Rapunzel asking Merida and Jack what siblings are like
Jack just treating them all like his little siblings
Jack and Merida gathering ingredients together and, depending on the region, Jack teaching Merida the safe local vegetation and herbs because he's been everywhere. Also, Jack teaching the others how to cook with local ingredients
Jack knowing a lot about herbal medicine and helping and teaching the others
After much internal deliberation, Jack choosing Hiccup to hold his staff while he takes care of two-handed tasks
Jack knowing how to style hair because of Mary, and he and Merida helping Rapunzel tame her hair

Something I rarely see talked about is the fact that, at least twice in the first movie alone, Toothless helps Hiccup set boundaries or get the respect he feels Hiccup deserves.
He didn't start flying peacefully to show Astrid how nice it can be until after she apologized for being mean and threatening to tell the village. And when she did, Toothless almost immediately relaxed and arguably showed off. Like he was saying "look at this. Look at us. Look at what you'd be breaking apart and missing out on."
And, even if he didn't know the full story or reason, Toothless knew Hiccup and Stoick had a fight and Hiccup was upset. So he didn't show Stoick that Hiccup was alive until after he apologized for hurting Hiccup and starting that massive fight in the first place. In that scene, if you look at Toothless's eyes, you can tell he's waiting for something. And the second Stoick apologized, Toothless softened and opened his wings.
Even if Toothless didn't fully understand the entire situation or all the complex human stuff associated with it, he still knew that Hiccup was upset and deserved an apology. Even if neither time Hiccup asked for one and was ready to just sweep it under the rug and forget, Toothless still went the extra little mile to make it clear he wouldn't allow Hiccup to be pushed around or hurt or disrespected or anything without consequence.
Just. I love that. I love how that alone shows how damn smart the dragons, or at the very least Night Furies, can be. Toothless is Hiccup's number one advocate for anything.

i love the idea that viggo's issue is that he's always overestimating the dragon riders and that's why he loses. other antagonists always underestimate them, they don't put in all the necessary precautions, which allows the riders to slip through, always throwing parties and gloating before the dragon is in the cage. but viggo?
my man takes so many precautions, his entire island is a war base, and yet, and YET the dragon riders got in by dyeing snotlout's hair blonde, giving him gucci boots and naming him sir ulgertorpe, SIR ULGERTORPE. viggo got catfished by snotlout with blonde hair. he's overestimating them so bad that the IDEA of them "just walking in" doesn't even come to mind. he's ready for fire and death to fall from the sky but a one-legged boy pulling a fast one on him breaks his fancy little english brain.
