A GUIDE TO STUDYING ONLINE/ONLINE SCHOOL
Hello all! Since I’ve started university now I thought I’d make a post on how to survive online school/studying!
SYNCHRONOUS VS ASYNCHRONOUS
Synchronous - taking part in online classes live via Zoom, MS Teams etc. It basically means also that you have to be at your computer or at least on your phone every time you normally should be at campus. This also means that you can interact with the teacher, ask questions but may also have to be prepared and be able to answer questions.
Asynchronous - taking part in online classes via some kind of communication tool, for example email, or your school’s e-drive. Teachers can send powerpoints, documents or even a video of them explaining a topic. You will have to finish the assignment until a certain date and either upload it or send it to them. The advantage of this is that you can save time if you are faster than the normal duration of the course. Furthermore, you can decide for yourself when you are spending time on this subject and work at your pace.
MAKE A TIMETABLE / TO-DO LIST
Make yourself a timetable or write down in your planner when you have to be online for which course and with what kind of tool (Zoom, Teams, email). You can also add in times you’re going to do your asynchronous work. For example on Tuesday’s I have a free day from synchronous lectures so I will catch up with asynchronous work then. Alternatively, make a to-do list whether it’s for the day or for the week. Mark the tasks you have to do the soonest with a certain colour or with a symbol beside it. If it’s not clear from the assignment itself, also write down to which subject or module the assignment belongs and how to submit it (for example upload to Teams or sending it via email). Learn to prioritise your tasks. TIP: make a folder for all your subjects/assignments and organise by module/topic. Edit: So now all my lectures are asynchronous, and I have on campus seminars so what I’ve done when making my timetable is: write in all timetabled/on-campus/synchronous sessions, and then from there I can see when I’m free to slot in any asynchronous lectures - and I’ll timetable these so I don’t forget to do them. I’ll also take into account when my seminars are e.g. if I have a social psychology seminar on Tuesday, I’ll make sure I get the social psychology lecture done before that seminar, rather than doing it on Friday when I have a free day.
TAKING NOTES
It can be hard to take notes on the laptop while in synchronous teaching. You can either go online with your phone and take notes on your laptop, take notes by hand or you can also try splitting your screen (which is what I do) between your MS Teams/Zoom and MS Word so you can see/hear what is being streamed while taking your notes. Many universities also enable a rewatch function,or they record lectures so you can watch the stream multiple times. If you have the possibility (and time) to rewatch the lesson, focus during the live stream only on understanding the topic and on asking questions if necessary. Take your notes while listening to the stream for the second time. This way, you will understand the topic better because you can fully focus on it. By listening to it a second time and writing down the important things, you also have your first revision! Only do this if the rewatch option of the stream is available and you have the time.
CHOOSE YOUR WORKSPACE WISELY
You probably already have one or multiple study spaces at home that you are used too. Probably (or hopefully) they are also practical - however, what is practical for studying in private might not be practical for synchronous teaching. Make sure the lighting is right so if you need to put your camera on - your face is recognisable and the light doesn’t cast shadows that may affect the call/camera. Make sure you also have enough space for your devices, pencil case, planner, drinks, notepad etc and make sure you have your chargers and you have a sufficient wi-fi connection!
FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE SOFTWARE
Whether it’s MS Teams, Zoom, or your school’s personal portal - familiarise yourself with how it works and where everything is found. This makes uploading work easier for you and helps you stay organised.
FIND A ROUTINE
Find a routine that works for you in terms of keeping up to date with your work, maintaining your social life and keeping some free time. Whether that’s a timetable by above or just settling into a routine - find what works best for you. E.g I wake up usually about 90 minutes before my first online session, take notes and in-between sessions, make sure I’ve uploaded everything onto my workspace in Notion (let me know if you want more info on this!) and then when I have more time I’ll check emails, plan blog posts etc etc. Make sure to try get at least 8 hours sleep every night and try maintain your social life/free time!

It’s been a while, but I’m back! It’s only the third week of this quarter and I’m already stressed. I ended up dropping a class and I still feel overwhelmed because of work and club activities.
But I’m still very excited about this quarter! It’s great to finally start taking astrophysics classes and to see all my friends again. These next few weeks may be rough, but eventually I will look back on this quarter, proud of all the effort I put in.

Early mornings vs late nights
Exam season is upon us. Well, definitely upon me. If you are plagued by the creeping fear that there is just too much to know, too much to catch up with, too much to remember - know you’re not alone.
It’s easy to feel like you are the only one who doesn’t have picture perfect notes, who doesn’t have time to create the perfect cozy flat lay or go to cute cafés to reward themselves. You know better - you know we all spend our times working late or getting up extra early, that nobody is perfectly organised and has to cram a concept last minute, that everyone has a weak moment in which they feel like they won’t make it. Can’t make it. We’re all human and especially now we have to remember that the “it’s all so easy as long as you bullet journal” facade is just that. A facade.
You can do it. Do it your way. The pictures don’t matter, your studies do.

I used to think that Phylosophy was my opponent. Then I learned about Educational Psychology.
I’ve been away from Tumblr for so long, but my class schedule this semester is absurd. I can’t recall the last time I slept for 8 hours in a row. Wish me luck.

hello hello, it’s ya girl cielo here with her first advice post, hi!
last semester i found myself not being able to concentrate on anything for more than 5 min at a time so i started trying out ways that would help me get things done, these are some of the tips that i’ve collected, i hope it helps!
things to do when you need to concentrate right now:
count words: grab a book (or just a text, i normally used a dictionary) and start counting the words of the first paragraph, you don’t have to read it or understand any of what the text is trying to convey, the act of counting something specific is what will help you concentrate (i advice counting up until 100-120 words at first).
stay still and focus on your body: close your eyes and feel the way your lungs fill up with air, sense where your arms are, where your feet are resting, concentrate in your heart beat, do this until you feel your head has cleared up again.
repeat a word/frase: it can be something that’s in front of you (a glass of water, an apple?) or a mantra you have, just make sure you’re not thinking about anything else, maybe shield your head in your arms, close your eyes, and start saying your word/frase over and over until you’re not up in the clouds anymore.
+ bonus! it will also help to pick a word related to what you’re currently studying! or repeating a phrase that’s in your text~
count from a 100 backwards: pretty self explanatory, the more you do this one, the more you’ll be able to count. i advice starting at 80 or maybe 70!
alphabet: so this one requiers a template. basically what you do is say the alphabet out loud and lift up your arms at the same time accordingly. L is for Left, R is for Right, B is for Both. take it slowly at first, you’ll eventually be able to do it faster.
the thing with this one is that you should change the order of the arms when you feel like you’ve memorised it (just cover it with a piece of paper, or some sticky notes) because it won’t help you at all once you do it automatically, just make sure not to put Left below the letter L, Right below R, and Both below B because it’d be too easy~ (if this doesn’t make sense, hopefully it will after you see the template).
i recommend doing this one before you start your study session!
move a pendulum without moving your hand: grab something that’s dangly and has some weight to it (i use my keys and grab them by the keychain) and hold it at eye level, make sure it’s completly still! start moving your object without moving your hand/arm (i know this sounds impossible but it’s actually pretty easy), just start thinking about moving it back and forth, you’ll see it start moving slowly, focus on giving it more momentum. when you see it flying around as you wanted switch to thinking about moving it from side to side, then in circles. you can do whatever combination of movements you can think of~
i recommend doing this one when you absolutely can not concentrate.

things that will help you concentrate on the long run:
doing the exercises listed above regularly: surprise! if you do those on the daily you’ll start noticing improvement on your concentration in general ^^
sleeping well, eating healthily, and doing exercise: this goes without saying, you can not expect to be focused on something if you’re sleepy/hungry. doing exercise helps you get rid of anxiety and restless energy!
yoga/meditation: not much i can say about this, practicing mindfulness ultimately increases your attention span.
+ bonus! specific video about doing yoga for concentration.
[ side note: that video can be a little hard for someone who is new to yoga, but i still recommend checking out her channel because she has a whole series dedicated to beginners ✧ ]
journaling: if you really can’t concentrate it’s likely because you have something on your mind that is either bothering you or it’s an issue that’s not resolved. journaling is a sure fire way to help you figure things out.
taking breaks: don’t! overwork! yourself! if you keep studying for hours on end you’ll eventually find yourself not understanding any of what you’re working on. taking breaks will give your brain the necessary space to process what you’re learning.
working in a room with no distractions: you can’t expect to concentrate in a room where there’s a lot of buzzing around, pls do yourself a favor and find a calm space~
not allowing yourself to get distracted: the toughest of it all, force yourself to remain focused until your next break, no matter if someone is chewing loudly next to you, no matter if your friends are being needy. discipline is everything!
