Reasons I Recommend the “Legend” Trilogy by Marie Lu
1) Two Protagonists - a boy and a girl, thus eliminating that obnoxious question that has become common in our culture: “Is this a boy book or a girl book?” Yes. Yes is the answer.
2) LGBTQ Representation - it’s not prominent, but it’s there, and it’s a very important relationship
3) Family Relationships are all positive - there are a couple supporting characters who had some bad things happen as far as how their parents treated them, but the three main families we see are quite positive. Parents love their kids, kids love their parents, sibling relationships are even more important and are positive.
4) Thorough Worldbuilding - one segment that explains the world feels a bit forced, but the explanation is there, and it makes some sense
5) Involves World Politics - even the UN is mentioned like it kept going, and two other countries and their politics figure heavily into the plot. We also get an explanation of what has happened in the rest of the world (I’m borrowing this reason from someone else - it’s not my idea, but I agree with it)
6) Celebrates Different Kinds of Intelligence - yes, the two main characters are both equally smart, but they have clearly different types of intelligence and the supporting characters represent different types as well
7) Complicated Choices for the Characters - This is a political series, and the main characters do a lot of choosing about what’s got to take precedence, as well as being teenagers and young and the choices that come with youth.
8) Boys and Girls are complicated and there are no clear gender role divisions, but it feels familiar at the same time
9) Romance is important to the story, but the story realizes that romance is complicated, messy, and doesn’t get to trump other decisions - it’s romance, but the way it plays out feels realistic and makes sense
I’m sure there are more reasons, but these are my initial ones. I’m also sure the series is flawed - I could make a post about that, too because I do have some bones to pick about it - but it’s also really, really good and my kid loves it as much as I do, which is really, honestly, enough for me.
