Caffe Mondo 意珍

Best for value if you get to this Italian restaurant on a clear day. We won't be bothered to go up the Canton Tower and pay extra if we find this much tastier place on the opposite side of the river.

We come in after the usual lunch hour and easily found a window side seat on the 72nd floor. They have weekend buffet option but we choose their Italian instead - after all it is a casual Italian restaurant (with Asian dishes on the menu for the lazy bunch).

Complimentary mini loaf of bread from their "highest stone oven in the world" - interesting way of advertising. Others have ordered pizzas but we opt for the pasta.

This green spinach tagliolini comes in a large round bowl. The potion is quite filling, soaking in a creamy Parmensan cheese sauce. Parma Ham adds to another level of saltiness. Nice tri-colour combo there!

Equally filling is the Tiramisu dessert coming from a martini glass. This completes our quest for quality Italian food in GZ!

Don't forget to look up from their lobby and be impressed by the modern skyscraper architecture!

Metro 麦德龙

This is not exactly your Costo Wholesale but a close enough Chinese cousin. Metro is what the locals go for a huge supermarket to bulk purchase - although the choice and range of products is still limited comparatively.

A typical aisle. Again not much variety but you can manage a dozen bottles of 2L coke if you are a sugar fan...

Frozen room for meat chops, with coats to cover yourself up shall you come in with a tank top. Hanging on the other side of the room is half a pig...

Dairy products with more imported selection, and imported food prices (typical). You can also find frozen food and fresh produce next to this. Most are the Chinese ones but try your luck with the occasional pizza and lamb chops.

This fresh herbs section is not too bad! A good range of everything and still not out of date!

On to the bulk pack 20kg rice maneuvered by machines... 

The other side of the complex also sells electronics, appliances and sporting equipments. No membership required but they registered your details at the entrance. Parking lot is shared with B&Q (UK DIY warehouse) and the rest of the industrial park. If you are tired of your typical groceries shopping then come have a look!

IPPUDO 一風堂

Coming straight from Fukuoka, Japan, this is Ippudo's 2nd restaurant in Mainland China. Their presence in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, and all the way to Sydney and New York, has proven to be a worldwide chain success. Reports of 1.5-hour queuing is needed for a seating in East Village, New York. I guess we get lucky with just 10 minutes wait at 8pm Saturday - Mall fo the World here at the Zhujiang New Town underground mall space is still a trending food spot to be explored by the local population.

It is full house yet the communal seating gives more space to the busy vibe. Staff are exceptionally trained - Japanese greeting (from the every staff member) upon entry and a waitress takes our order without a fuss. The atmosphere is lively even in the late dining hours. Peek into the open kitchen and you can see the chefs are equally serious inside towards the end of a long day.

There are not a lot of choices on the menu - their signature dishes are the "white bowl" Hakata Classic, and "red bowl" Akamaru Classic, with typical cooked sides and optional additions into the ramen. Same reason there is little wait for the noodles to be served on our table.

We tried a red bowl, which is of a heavy miso taste and spiced garlic flavour. Kyushu-style extras such as chunks of pork bellies and half a soft boiled egg are equally attractive. Ramen is of a thinner kind, easy to bite, but quantity slightly lacking on a hungry night. Additional roll of ramen can be ordered to soak up the broth for a more filling meal. Or of course side dishes are also tempting. We are glad that more mid-range Japanese-managed restaurants are entering the GZ market, and with a fresh following already. Rumoured to have more branches in Grandview Mall in Tianhe, hopefully their professional attitude will be an industry standard in the near future.

Lantern Club 灯笼

Or you can call this place as "Deng Long", the pinyin for Lantern, which we expect to be more popular name for the local Chinese.

This very new lounge (soft opening last month) is targeted for Chinese but would leave a good impression for the expats also. It might have been a East-meet-West fusion experiment. Huge space to begin with, funky union jack table tops and Buddha statues in plastic to fill up the ground level, which includes a couple of custom-made toy-shaped snooker tables and other games (eg, darts, dice, etc).

We came in on a group booking and their private room will not disappoint  - equipped with typically, KTV, standard snooker table, and Kinect game!

What's more it's the roof they are offering on the 13th floor - a very high rooftop overlooking the city. It's not just the usual sky garden with huge Stella Artois sponsored signage - with a SWIMMING POOL at the side like a human fish tank next to the sofas.

Because it is so new, we haven't had the chance to hear any live or EDM but they certainly are well-equipped for that. Just see what the Chinese come up with given such cool hardwares.

Special Report: Redtory 红砖厂

A pleasant Sunday walk around another art district, at a former canned food factory with brick warehouses. This district may look similar than the infamous 798 Art District in Beijing, and in fact they belong to the same management.

Redtory can be easily accessed from the Metro but the entrance is tricky to find. Directly behind the metro exit is a dirt road that leads to it. Use the old chimney as a landmark and spot two piles of bricks with signage. Hopefully that will point you to the right direction of the entrance (which is also a narrow lane). Follow the crowd of young art /photography enthusiasts if in doubt. (See travel info at the bottom)

For comfort food in an easy afternoon, this district is in no shortage of private, non-branded cafes and food places, with the exception of Uncle Restaurant (Hong Kong-style food). Many have adapted the warehouse setting and converted their exterior and interior with such themed design, such as the Iron Curtain Gallery and Red Ants Restaurant. The most attractive one has to be the Train Station restaurant, although the Chinese food it serves do not quite match this romantic atmosphere.

This area is closely related to GAFA (Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts), one of the top art universities of China, and therefore local students and practitioners from China or overseas come regularly for exhibitions, shows, and talks. 360 Design Bookshop is among one of this establishments. Exhibitions at the time we visited include Chinese Modern Art show, and at another building, an architecture award invitation show from Finland.

Every Sunday you can found their Art & Craft market, a bazaar of somewhat 30 booths selling all sorts of handcrafted toys, clothing, jewelries, souvenirs, etc. DIY craft workshops such as ceramics and leather accessories can be seen filled with both children and adults when classes are held.

This area is definitely one of the most relaxing place to be for an entertaining weekend in Guangzhou. Bring your bike, date, camera, poodles here and see for yourself!!

Hooleys 活利仕西餐厅

Whenever you see an Irish Pub in a foreign country, it is a quality guaranteed.   Hooley's is one of the very first restaurants opening on now what is known as Xingsheng Lu Food Street. Before at their previous location on Tianhe Bei Lu, Hooley's was already an established pub for expats and regular visitors. Food we tried: House Burger with toasted soft bun on top, very filling especially with a think, juicy patty. Potato wedges were a bit excessive for those who does not have a huge appetite.

We wonder how this sandwich (Turkish grilled chicken?) came opened with the top and bottom separated. Still, full-on tartar sauce is well-suited for the occasion.

Now on every busy Saturday, the second floor would be fully packed with those coming in for the rock live music played by the enthusiastic cover band.

On the less crowded 3rd floor, you can go people-watching sitting next to the balcony, with a clear view of the stage and fans from the above. Or perhaps try a game of pool with a new friend you make? Of course as a typical pub you get the live broadcast of sports games and good Guinness to go with!

Boomerang Bakery 博磨人咖啡店

Bread time! Seriously everyone living in Guangzhou long enough would have a craving for quality bread. Those that comes in pre-sealed plastic bags in Family Mart or Maxims provide no satisfaction. We are lucky to have Boomerang to be around our ZJNT neighbourhood.

We sat down in a hurry for about 20 minutes, yet there had been quite a few people coming in for coffee takeaways. So we stared at their counter - and noticed their fridge of imported meat stuff and on the shelf, sauces, jams and the like. From their website we found out Boomerang does deliveries, beer wholesale and other event catering services, so given not many customer sitting down, this little place is busy (Aussie managers were kept on the phone for a long time).

A supersweet mini cupcake from the Daily Special menu comes with the coffee we ordered, adding a spongy cheese+bacon roll to fill us up. This other shelf is very distracting with all these candy colored cakes, tarts, muffins, lamingtons  - all at very competitive prices!

All breads fresh or on discount where baked on the premises. Look at these trays - and again in a variety of rolls, pizzas, croissants, pullaparts, ciabattas... Give us hope and happiness for the day!

The decor remains minimal with white, cold flooring, which is a big contrast comparing to the cute cupcakes in store. If they would have improved the indoor lighting into a tungsten, warmer tone instead of the current fluorescent blues, everything will be even more appetizing. (**Even for our photos we have to tune them for aesthetics purposes...)

Vespa

Fresh off from their soft opening. This is a new lounge in Liede, a highly modernized residential area gradually transforming the GZ night time landscape.

Blinging signage there, but where is that scooter hmm?

All the table tops in the lounge area are lighting up your drinks. Their color changes from time to time, simultaneously with the all other tables, which is a cool indoor light show by itself! Wish they do more with the projection screen though.

Loudspeakers hanging mid way from the tall ceiling are doing a fantastic job, with a DJ delivering chill beats from the booth on the 2nd floor. Although we are not sure about that chop-off disco ball shape... looks funny...

There are dining tables in the other side of the room to serve food on a later date.

The bill can be tricky. We got some surprises when we saw it, so check what you are ordering.

This place is advertised in an exclusive tone ("invitation only"), so consider yourself a special guest if you managed to get in.

The Coffee Club 卡啡客

Another search for a Saturday brunch place! This time we ventured in Liede.

There are plenty of new food & drink places opening on Xingsheng Lu, so expect some degree of construction going on (luckily they are finishing).

The Coffee Club is a big chain from Australia & New Zealand, and this is one of their 4 locations in Guangzhou. 

There are plenty of seats for if you prefer al fresco or even the 2nd floor, and it is quite a popular of choice breakfast as well (as comparing to the neighbouring shops still setting up at 11am). It is a cafe-bar-restaurant and opening till late.

For the green-conscious customers, they offer UTZ certified coffee! Drinking a cup here makes you a better person saving the world, so why not!

This is a semi-self-serviced cafe meaning you order at the counter, get a number, and the food will be delivered to you. One of the waiters helped closing the movable glass doors as it was getting cold. They do live up to their slogan - "Good Food. Great Service. Excellent Coffee."

This is 3 cheese omelette, coming with 2 slices of toast and tomato you see here. Indeed it is very filling for a good brunch. The omelette covered half of the plate so it is large sized. Just a bit dry and wish they came with ketchup.

The Brew (Taojin)

En route to another destination for the night, we dropped by the new Brew on Jianshe 6 Ma Lu (Taojin). The Brew is a successful sports bar brand in Guangzhou, with their first location in Panyu and then a 2nd in Zhujiang New Town.

This Brew is popular among expats and locals alike, as there is reliable satellite broadcast for live sports events (football/hockey/soccer/F1 to name a few). Their walls display a variety of memorabilia with a focus on Canadian ones for the nostalgic expats.

We only get our drinks here, but they do have a full menu for quality burgers, Buffalo wings, nachos in North-American style, and a wide selection of drafts and imported bottles including a good Moosehead. Whether you enjoy relaxing Canadian folk music on the background or live bands playing with a very attractive female lead singer, it is certainly a delightful pub experience in this busy restaurant neighborhood.

Olé Supermarket 精品超市

In response to this discussion about finding cheese, biteGZ went check out the cheese fridge at Olé, Taikoo Hui.

On this shelf we spotted Dutch Maasdam, Frico Gouda (and with cumin), Emmi Foudue Swisse, French Président Emmental Cœur de Meule, Roussel Bleu d'Auvergne, Dodoni Feta, Goat cheese, and plus various Cheddar and Mozzarella... Always make us wonder why people cannot find cheese here?

Olé is a premium supermarket specialized in imported foods, and managed under the Vanguard chain. Their resting area offers free wifi and a lot of staff from the rest of Taikoo Hui came for food also!

Special Report: Food Carnival on Party Pier

There are a few Food Fests around GZ in the last weeks of this month (others being in Tianhe Sport Centre and Panyu). Party Pier, as one of our favourite night time hangout, is hosting their own. However, this wasn't   an event with good publicity. We only saw this "International Beer & Food Carnival" announcement on their Chinese-based social media Weibo, and little was known to the expat community. So what are the Chinese getting here? Here we go!

What attracted our attention was their FREE & UNLIMITED supply of draft beer advertising... Okay it was Zhujiang beer... But as long as there is something free to wash down the food, we wouldn't mind! And it's coming from the beer factory behind so at least it's fresh.

Party Pier transformed their open yard next to their monthly Full Moon Party Stage into booths of food/drink importers, restaurants/BBQ takeaway. Given the cool weather (under 10oC) with chilling wind, the atmosphere just wasn't there even at prime dinner time 8pm. Hardly anyone sat down.

This first section was all too Chinese - perhaps it's the tacky banner design, or the local staff in service, so even we sampled our German Käsekrainer cheese sausage and Vietnamese shrimp cha gio spring rolls with nuoc nam dipping, they felt average. In fact there were more Chinese food with half of the booths serving different street foods from TAIWAN. Where are the "international" ones?

The second area, originally an exhibition hall with a glass ceiling, became the European food hall. As disappointing it is as the outside, the minimalist display of imported wine/ canned foods /snacks/ olive oil with staff hiding behind their desk simply did not sell. Nevertheless, this shaded dining area attracted a hungry crowd to consume what they just freshly bought from the other areas, where they can sit with their jacket on.

The last section was again in open-air, where each establishment on Party Pier have their own booth. Wave, for example, was serving kebab. Chinese band there created some background music. Yet whether it was jazz or Cantopop, hardly anyone was in the mood of sitting down for long in the cold. We completed our visit with a warming desert -  double-layer milk pudding with puff pastry (酥皮雙皮奶) - from Shinhing Restaurant (Hong Kong). Again not getting any options from other parts of the world...

We got back to the metro station via their shuttle bus running every 10 minutes. This was the best arrangement of this event (if not counting the free beers), and the rest was quite a failure. If this is an evening event for cooked food running daily from 4-9pm in late Dec, at least set up a heated area for people to eat. Promotions, presentation of restaurants and overall design had to be up to international standard. Accompanying entertainment should be well-planned. We have been to more enjoyable food fests in other parts of GZ where everyone ate more in greater variety. Party Pier, being the upmost popular nightlife district in GZ, didn't manage to organize a good party, made us rather unimpressed.

All the breakfast ingredients sits nicely together. The colours brighten up my day! But not enough to be filling... I guess it's good for those in diet :)

Great place for romantic coffee dates and night time gelato! Look at that fridge hmm... Helpful staff will certainly recommend the best combo for ya!

Edge Restaurant & Bar

Came in for their jazz event advertised elsewhere. I was expecting a gloomy corner with some indie music, but... whoa!

The dining area is big with a raised floor on the end, where you can see the semi-open kitchen.

Some expat foodie friend recommended their mussels (afaik they do direct import) - so I ordered this seafood pasta. Fresh juicy mussels and fat prawns there. Full and satisfied!! I might take that lamb chop next round!! Menu is international and from an Aussie chef.

An international mix of band members came in and started playing at about 10pm. Pleasant place to chill-out with a cocktail, or their interesting selection of wines and beers!

Lab 研酒室

Another cool little spot on Xinsheng Lu of Liede.

We came in at their opening night to check out the cool interior design. Warehouse grey walls varnished with odd-shaped metallic hanging lamps. Other industrial elements can also be found in every corner.

A quick check upstairs in their private room with a long tasting table. Just to make sure we didn't miss any of the cyber style.

The name of Lab suggested this place is serious about their drinks, and indeed their cocktail list is extensive. Ask one of the friendly waiters in lab coats and they would recommend their seasonal special to you!

Here I'm having a refreshing glass of sweetness with ice sphere and cucumber in it. Behind the bar is mixologist Dong, who came 3rd at the Barcadi Legacy Cocktail Competition in South China, so I expect quality here.

If bored, get shots in all shapes of test tubes!

Wednesday is their salsa / ladies night so it can be a busy place in the week too.

Catwalk跳舞俱乐部

For the late night people, biteGZ dropped by a nightclub this time - into Catwalk! When we got in it was about 30 minutes passed midnight, and we walked in without a queue. Although some complained about table bookings etc., we didn't get ourselves into trouble.

It is one of the biggest club in town, with over 2,000 sqm floor space (and KTV room on the other floors of this 4-storey building) and a very high ceiling. Venue (as shown in pics) is extravagantly decorated with giant chandeliers, with walls covered in LED screens, and movable rail lights.

From the look of it, it is impressive.

Imagine yourself in a basketball game court - you can find elevated sofa seatings at the stairs on both sides. In the far end there is a wide DJ booth and ceiling-high videos playing. The black framing and shape reminds me of a European cathedral. Then you have the elevated corridor right in the centre - hence the name Catwalk.

As of many other Chinese clubs, the floor is cramped with tables and people, and there is only this tiny strip called the dance floor... I guess they are quite used to be stuck in a overcrowded place and do not mind. Do take a look at where the emergency exits are when you are not that drunk!

From time to time they have performance by foreign troops, and supposedly, international DJ by invitation on certain dates too. An entertaining atmosphere it is, however deafening the music can be if you stand closer to the far end. You can order from the iPad drinks menu from the counter (as if you haven't booked a table it's all self-serviced) - but it's not easy to hold onto your drinks with elbows all around you!

Paulaner Bräuhaus 宝隆纳

One of the best selling German beer brand and restaurant chain finally located themselves in Guangzhou. Do you know they are already established in 13 different Chinese cities?

The central beer hall is very spacious and quite popular on a summer weekend. Munich-style maypole standing in the middle puts you in a festive feeling. Live band can be seen at the far (left) corner playing jazzy western music or sometimes Chinese. Behind them, or in fact surrounding the brewhouse are the pipes and equipments for bringing in fresh beers on site!
