Volunteer project in the Favelas. Rio de Janeiro, Brasil I have a slight fascination with the favelas here in Brasil. I know to some this is crazy, and to other who know my whacky ways, i guess its pretty standard. The pre warning email to be wary of being robbed while travelling to the favela, not to worry when you hear the occasional daily gun shot, and that each day at least one person in the favela is shot or killed. And yet almost none of this is ever spoken of. However after being there, its not so bad. You dont get involved or in the way and you have any problems. The only risk here is being in the wrong place at the wrong time, which you can apply to any situation. They’re made out to be this dangerous, violent drug trafficking place. This goes on, but it also happens in every other part of the world. Its just in this case theres more of it in a confined area and with more access to guns the less safe of course. Today i learnt a little history of the favela. The name comes from a tree that grows on the hill, called the favela tree. Pretty cool, not all about the ghetto. Also that the main problem here is that the police and the traffickers are at war with each other, which seems to be one of the main dangerous parts of this. No two groups of people at war with each other in the same place involving guns and drugs goes down well. Corruption with police and governments mean trouble with all in these areas. Today was an intro into the first week of the volunteer project with Community in action. We will be working with kids from the favelas who go to school for 4 hours and then we keep activities going to keep them out of trouble. They also are involved in women empowerment, building gardens etc, murals, and creating a safe space for kids and people in the community.
