Simply, APIs are a set of functions and procedures that allow for the creation of applications. They help access the data and features of other applications, services or operating systems. They are an interface between different software platforms, allowing two unrelated applications to talk to each other. We will discuss more examples as we go ahead.

We go to a restaurant and ask for the menu card. The waiter gives the menu card, which shows a list of dishes, we can order. Next, we order some dishes from the menu to the waiter. The waiter takes our order and communicates to the restaurant’s kitchen. The kitchen does it work and prepares the dishes for us. The waiter serves us those dishes. We don’t exactly know what went in the kitchen, nor are we interested. The waiter here is an interface between us and the restaurant’s kitchen.

In our example, waiter’s work is quite like that of an API.
