Locally adapted, decentralised innovation is reshaping what environmental monitoring in Africa

Projects like AirQo in Uganda and Clarity Nodes in Nairobi are deploying low-cost particulate matter sensors to create real-time urban air quality maps.  

These portable devices, calibrated against reference stations, are not housed in government ministries—they’re installed in schools, markets, and transit corridors. 

This hyperlocal, community-focused deployment marks a decisive shift toward monitoring as a distributed public good. 

In the water space, compact mobile testing kits—some linked to smartphones—are enabling NGOs and universities to test for E. coli, nitrates, and fluoride in boreholes and streams.  These kits don’t require lab infrastructure or formal training, making them ideal for community-led sampling in rural areas. 

Remote sensing is also playing a vital role. Satellite data from programs like Sentinel and MODIS is being used to track vegetation loss, algal blooms, and surface water dynamics.  

In Lake Victoria, a hybrid approach pairs satellite analysis with on-the-ground sensors—offering a model for blended, multilayered monitoring frameworks that don’t depend on centralised equipment alone. 

Perhaps the most transformative development is the rise of citizen science networks.  

In Ghana, Nigeria, and Uganda, residents are using hand-held air monitors to document conditions in their own neighbourhoods.  

These datasets are often shared via open-access platforms, where they inform city planning and regulatory debates. They also demonstrate a growing confidence in decentralised data ownership and interpretation. 

Universities across the continent are enabling much of this innovation. Institutions like the University of Cape Town and Makerere University are not only building and testing sensors but also training local technicians and hosting data platforms. Their work has become a central node in an emerging, distributed monitoring ecosystem.

Are solar power systems prone to cyberattacks?

The report, written by risk management organisation DNV.

Europe’s move away from an energy system dependent on a few high-impact targets to a more decentralised system offers clear energy security benefits, the report states. Ukraine has learnt this in a particularly brutal way, following repeated cyberattacks on its power grid by Russia.

But to realise these benefits, cybersecurity laws, which focus on old, centralised infrastructure, need to be updated, the experts say. New legislation must address the specific security needs of distributed energy sources, like smaller rooftop solar installations.

Though on a much smaller scale than the strikes on other parts of the energy sector, the solar sector has faced attacks and interference, too.

In 2023, a group of Romanian solar customers modified mandatory inverter settings - which convert DC electricity generated by panels into the AC electricity used by homes - to disable the voltage-active power function. 

This function is required by the grid operators to reduce active power at high grid voltage, in order to keep the power system running efficiently and safely. 

Modifying this grid support function enabled the customers to make more money by not limiting their solar systems during high-voltage events, potentially jeopardising grid integrity as a result.

In a more pernicious incident, pro-Russian hacktivist group Just Evil stole credentials for 22 client sites in Lithuania and posted them on the Dark Web last year. This opened up access to the management portal of these solar sites, although access was not used to carry out further attacks on that occasion. 

Analysing risk, the report found that these large utility-scale solar installations are more secure, since they are often managed by experienced utilities and covered by the EU’s Network and Information Security (NIS2) Directive.

Small-scale solar systems, meanwhile, which are often rooftop installations on people’s homes or businesses, lack strict cyber rules. They are connected to the clouds of manufacturers, installers, or service providers. 

And while the impact of compromising a single installation is low, when grouped together for power system efficiency, they become virtual power plants of significant scale.

Crowdsourcing in Times of Crisis: Strengths, Challenges, and Ethical Considerations

The increasing reliance on crowdsourcing during disasters highlights its transformative potential in crisis response, as demonstrated by Riccardi’s (2016) analysis of its role in disaster risk reduction. Crowdsourcing leverages collective intelligence and real-time data from affected populations, enabling faster and more adaptable responses than traditional top-down approaches (Riccardi 2016). During events such as earthquakes, floods, or humanitarian crises, platforms like Ushahidi and Zooniverse have proven instrumental in mapping affected areas, coordinating rescue efforts, and distributing aid (Meier 2015). However, while crowdsourcing enhances situational awareness and community resilience, it also presents challenges related to data accuracy, privacy, and digital inequality that must be addressed to maximise its effectiveness.

One of the key strengths of crowdsourcing in crisis situations is its ability to provide real-time, hyperlocal information that official channels may lack. Riccardi (2016) emphasises how crowdsourced data from social media, SMS, and dedicated platforms can fill critical gaps in early warning systems and damage assessment. For instance, during the 2010 Haiti earthquake, volunteers worldwide analysed satellite imagery and social media reports to create crisis maps, significantly improving aid delivery (Zook et al. 2010). Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, grassroots initiatives like mutual aid networks used crowdsourcing to identify vulnerable individuals and distribute resources (Biddinger et al. 2021). These examples demonstrate how decentralised information gathering can enhance the speed and precision of disaster response, particularly when traditional infrastructure is compromised.

Despite these advantages, crowdsourcing in crises is not without limitations. Data verification remains a persistent challenge, as unvetted user-generated content can spread misinformation or overwhelm responders with redundant reports (Starbird & Palen 2011). Ethical concerns also arise regarding privacy and the potential exploitation of vulnerable contributors, particularly in low-resource settings where participants may lack digital literacy or face surveillance risks (Crawford & Finn 2015). Furthermore, crowdsourcing initiatives often exclude marginalised groups with limited internet access, reinforcing existing inequalities in disaster response (Houston et al. 2015). Riccardi’s (2016) framework underscores the need for governance mechanisms that ensure data reliability while protecting contributor rights a balance that remains difficult to achieve in high-pressure scenarios.

The effectiveness of crowdsourcing ultimately depends on how well it integrates with formal response systems. Studies show that the most successful initiatives involve partnerships between grassroots volunteers and established organisations, combining community insights with institutional resources (Liu 2014). For example, the Standby Task Force collaborates with the United Nations to filter and validate crowdsourced data before it reaches decision-makers (Meier 2015). Such hybrid models address key concerns raised by Riccardi (2016), including scalability and accountability, while preserving the agility of bottom-up participation. Future developments in artificial intelligence could further enhance these efforts by automating data processing, though human oversight remains crucial to contextualise information and mitigate bias (Poblet et al. 2018).

As climate change and global instability increase the frequency of disasters, crowdsourcing will likely play an even greater role in crisis management. Riccardi’s (2016) work highlights both its transformative potential and the need for ethical guidelines to govern its use. Strengthening digital infrastructure in vulnerable regions, improving verification protocols, and fostering equitable partnerships between communities and institutions can help realise crowdsourcing’s full benefits while minimising its risks.

Week 12 – Crisis in the Crowd: How Social Media Mobilises Communities in Disaster Response

During the last week of MDA20009: Digital Communities, we learned about one of the most promising arrivals of digital technology and human solidarity: crowdsourcing during crises. One of the ways through which this lecture helped reframe social media was not only as a means of connection or performance, but as a network of life-saving during times of emergency and trauma.

The concept of crowdsourcing, which Merriam-Webster describes as “the practice of soliciting ideas, content, or other contributions (as an online community)” is not new. Indeed, rewards to address social issues—what we today term as distributed problem solving—were introduced as early as the 18 th century. However, the possibilities of such networks have been radically increased and speeded up by digital media, particularly by such sites as Twitter, Facebook, and Ushahidi.

Among the most interesting cases presented was the Ushahidi, which is a site that lets people send live updates through SMS, Twitter and other social media to build crisis maps in real time. In the case of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, this system assisted emergency responders in determining where assistance was required most- demonstrating the life or death usefulness of confirmed, crowd sourced information (Ford, 2012).

The lecture also determined how the content created by citizens, pictures, tweets, and videos have taken center-stage in the way the masses interpret and respond to crises. Due to the described above, social networking sites have become places where individuals derive meaning out of traumatic situations, express their feelings and emotions and keep the authorities in check as observed by Horbury and Hughes (2010). This change of traditional broadcast to participatory crisis communication was particularly evident in relation to the example of 2011 Queensland floods, in which the @QPSMedia Twitter account was transformed into an important, responsive source of official information.

But there exist difficulties. Real time verification of information may be challenging. Emergency organisations are frequently hierarchical and sluggish organisations, and they cannot keep up with the decentralised, horizontal flow of social media data (Anderson, 2012). These are important questions: Is social media able to be fully incorporated into formal emergency management? And what when false news is distributed as fast as genuine news?

Finally, the current week showed that digital communities may turn into resilient, adaptive publics in a crisis, self-organising, emotionally invested and highly collaborative. Personally, it is quite an intense reminder of what digital citizenship is actually about: it is not only sharing and posting but also playing a significant role in the welfare of other people.

EKS Dashboard: Kubernetes cluster Access over AWS Regions

Kubernetes cluster visibility may be centralised across AWS regions and accounts using EKS Dashboard.

EKS Dashboard is a new AWS feature. A centralised display allows cluster administrators and cloud architects monitor their Kubernetes clusters organisationally. Its major goal is to give clients a single view of clusters across AWS Regions and accounts. This single view helps track cluster inventories, compliance, operational activity planning, and version updates.

The EKS Dashboard helps companies scale Kubernetes deployments. Multiple clusters are often run for data sovereignty, business continuity, or better availability. This distributed technique makes visibility and control difficult, especially in decentralised systems with several regions and accounts. Clients have traditionally used external products for centralised cluster visibility. Third-party solutions' identification and access setup, licensing costs, and ongoing maintenance added complexity.

The EKS Dashboard simplifies this procedure with native AWS Console dashboard features. It offers data about clusters, regulated node groups, and EKS add-ons. Dashboard insights include cluster health indicators, predicted extended support EKS control plane charges, support status, account, version, and cluster distribution by region. Automatic filtering lets users explore certain data points. This feature makes clusters easier to find and focus on.

A brief tour of the EKS Dashboard shows tabular, graphical, and map representations of Kubernetes clusters. Advanced search and filtering are offered. There are several widgets for cluster visualisation. You can visualise managed node groups by AMI versions, launch templates, and instance type distribution. You can also map your clusters worldwide. Data from the dashboard can be exported for study or custom reports.

Setting up EKS Dashboard

According to reports, EKS Dashboard setup is easy. AWS Organisation management and administrator accounts grant clients access to the EKS interface Dashboard. Turning on trusted access on the organization's Amazon EKS settings page is the only setup requirement. Dashboard settings allow trusted access. The management account can view the Dashboard with trusted access. The official AWS Documentation provides setup and configuration details.

Importantly, the EKS Dashboard is not limited to Amazon EKS clusters. It can also provide visibility into linked Kubernetes clusters on-site or on other cloud providers. Even while hybrid or multi-cloud clusters may have inferior data quality than native Amazon EKS clusters, this functionality provides uniform visibility for enterprises.

Availability

The EKS Dashboard is currently available in the US East (N. Virginia). Use it to integrate data from all commercial AWS Regions. No additional fees apply to the EKS Dashboard.

This new functionality emphasises AWS's commitment to simplifying Kubernetes operations. To let clients focus on app development and growth, infrastructure management is removed.

Finally, the native AWS EKS Dashboard provides a unified view of Kubernetes clusters across accounts and regions. It provides basic visibility for linked non-EKS clusters, comprehensive visualisations, extensive insights, and quick setup at no additional cost.

Title Deeds On The Blockchain

In South Africa and across the continent, there are issues with the integrity of property registries. In townships and rural areas, it is alarmingly common for people not to hold the title deeds for the properties they purportedly own.

Usually, this is because, at some point along the ownership chain, someone neglected to register and formally transfer the property upon sale. Often, the process is simply too expensive or inconvenient. Sometimes this can also result in scams, where properties are sold multiple times by someone who isn’t the owner, because it's difficult to verify that ownership. Using blockchain, anyone could verify ownership, as long as they have an internet connection.

This widespread problem not only undermines property rights but also threatens the security and socio-economic stability of communities when disputes arise.

A company based in Nigeria is already addressing this problem using blockchain technology. Digital assets corresponding to plots of land are being plotted onto publicly available satellite maps, which contain information about the price of the land, its current owner, and its ownership history.

Nigerian estate agents are using the system to facilitate land sales and issue ownership certificates. These certificates are credible due to the reliability of the underlying technology. Importantly, no one has to pay to visit a deeds office to access the information — it’s all public, distributed, and decentralised.

As a result, thousands of people have been able to protect themselves from a common scam in Nigeria (and reportedly in South Africa as well) involving a "seller" selling land they never owned. The unfortunate "buyer" only discovers months (or years) later that the transaction was fraudulent when the real owner arrives, by which time the scammer has vanished.

Going FOSS: An Intro to Open-Source software for studyblr (and also some privacy related bits)

Intro & attempt at TLDR

Hey everyone! Today I’d like to tell y’all something about Open Source Software, and also Why this should matter to you! This’ll probably be the first post of a series I intend to do, because I believe the Studyblr community, even the non-nerd folks, could really benefit from switching some things out in their digital environment. Since this is a long post, I attempted to summarise it below, please do read on if you have the spoons tho!

TLDR?

FOSS stands for “Free and Open Source Software” the “free” part doesn’t necessarily mean it’s free as in free pizza, but mostly means free as in freedom.

There’s a humongous amount of variants on this concept, but the core of FOSS specifically is the four freedoms:

1. To run the program however you want and for whatever you want

2. To study how the program works and to change it in whatever way you want

3. To be able to share it with whomever you feel like

4. To be able to share your modified version with whomever you want

There’s a whole host of software licenses built around these concepts, you can check those out at the Open Source Initiative website, or at Choose A License. Both have a good summary of what they all stand for.

Open Source software is used for a lot of products, nearly every single webserver is an Apache Linux server, Google chrome is built on top of their open source chromium (google is still the devil, but y’know, it’s an example), and even deep deep down, Apple computers run on top of a Linux Kernel. Many more can be listed, but I won’t do that otherwise this isn’t a TLDR anymore.

Now, Why is this important for you? The Open Source Initiative summed it up real nicely already, but heres a short paraphrase:

Control & Security. If software is open source then you can check if it really works the way it does, and to make sure it’s not spying on you. Even if you don’t have the skills for it, someone else who does will be able to check. Also if you don’t like how something works in a program, then you’ll be able to change it or find someone else’s changed version that you like more.

Training. People who want to learn programming can use the code to see what makes programs tick, as well as use it as a guide for their own projects.

Stability. Because everything’s out in the open, that means someone else can take up maintaining a project or make a successor of it, in case the original developers suddenly quit working on it. This is especially important when it’s software that’s absolutely critical for certain tasks.

Community. It’s not just one program. It’s a lot of people working together to make, test, use, and promote a project they really love. Lots of projects end up with a dedicated fanbase that helps support the developers in continuing to work on the software.

I’d like to add one more tho: Privacy, which ties in a lot with the security part. Nowadays with protests going on and everything being online due to the pandemic, folks have been and will be confronted much more with the impact of privacy, and lack thereof. Open Source software means that if any company or group tries to spy on you, then you and anyone who feels like checking, will be able to know and take action on it. Terminology: Let’s get that out of the way first

Open Source: The source code that a program is made up of is freely accessible, anyone can look at it and check whether it works well enough or to make sure it doesn’t spy on you.

FOSS: Free and Open Source Software. This doesn’t mean that you don’t need to pay for it, it’s free as in freedom and free speech, not free pizza.

There are four freedoms associated with FOSS:

The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).

The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3).

By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

FLOSS: Free and Libre Open Source Software. This time it is “free” as in free pizza. The “libre” is french for “free” as in freedom.

GRATIS: Sometimes people use this word to mean “free” as in free pizza. Usually alongside “FOSS”

Licenses : A license is something that tells others what they can or cannot do with your code. Licenses also apply to art and literature, those are copyright licenses. There are many different software licenses and I’m not going to be able to list them all.

The biggest players however are:

GNU General Public License (also known as GPL)

MIT License

Mozilla Public License 2.0

There’s even more and you can find a list of them Here on the Open Source Initiative site There’s so many licenses that there’s even a Choose A License site, where you can pick a license depending on what you want it to achieve

Who and/or what even uses open source software?

You don’t need to be some nerd to benefit from Open Source software, in fact, you’re using open source software right now! The biggest example is the whole entire internet. Websites are stored on servers, and nearly every single webserver is a Linux server. The second biggest browser Firefox is open source, and even google chrome is built on top of “chromium” an open source base. If you dont use an iPhone, then you’re probably on an Android phone. Guess what? Android is part of the Android Open Source Project, which is then built upon a GNU/Linux base. All Open Source. Chromebooks? Built on top of a Linux kernel (like a non-patented engine you could put into any motor vehicle you’d like). Heck, even Apple computers are, at their core, built on top of a Linux kernel.

Neat apps you may wanna check out!

I’ve made a little list of apps that might be especially useful for studyblr folks, but depending on how well this post does I’ll probably make some more posts for specific apps.

TiddlyWiki, has a bajillion different ways to organise your thoughts, and also a lot of variant builds out there. Check out their table of contents if you feel lost! There’s versions available for most big browsers, as well as windows, linux, mac, android, and iOS.

AnyType, is an app that looks and almost exactly like notion, but is much more decentralised. They’re currently still in development but if you want to support them, sign up for early access and give them some feedback so they know what works and doesn’t! They’re still in closed alpha, but are intending to give beta access to about 100 folks at a time throughout 2021, so please sign up if this looks interesting to you!

Trilium Notes, is slightly more like a “notebook”, however you can arrange your notes in nearly infinitely deep folders. You can use things like Relation Maps & Link Maps to visualise your notes and how they go together. There’s even more they do and I just cant list it all, so go check out their stuff for a more comprehensive overview! Works on windows, linux, and (unsupported) mac

LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE are two office suites that function just as well as micro$oft office, often Even Better in my experience. I’ve used LibreOffice for years now and honestly? never going back. OnlyOffice is technically free (as in pizza), but it’s a slight hassle to get everything set up, cause you need to set it up on a server. They have a paid and hosted version available with educational discounts, but honestly i’d go with LibreOffice.

OnePile, is an app I haven’t used myself since it only runs on Apple stuff. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about it so that’s why it’s in here. It looks like it works similar to most general “note taking notebook” apps. Looks really pretty too honestly.

EtherPad, is similar to ONLYOFFICE, however this one’s a lot more focused on specifically text documents. Works with real-time collaboration which is really neat.

Anything that FramaSoft has going on. They’re a non-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting digital freedom. A lot of open source cloud related things are not really useful to people who don’t have the time and/or money to set up a whole-ass server. That’s where FramaSoft comes in, they do it for you. Just about everything they offer (here’s a full overview) are free (as in free pizza). They also have a separate site to help you get started!

It’s not free to run it all on their side, so if you find yourself interested in using their services please try to support them any way you monetarily can! (they even have a “minetest” server (not minecraft, deeeefinitely not minecraft))

Joplin!! Which is also what I used to write this post so I wouldn’t have to use The Tumble’s post writing thing. It’s good for taking notes, has a bunch of neat plug-ins, and can also sync with a variety of cloud services!

Nextcloud For if you want to go just that little bit further on the open source and the privacy. Nextcloud has honestly way too many features for me to list, but the important parts are that it’s a nigh perfect replacement for office365, and probably even GSuite. The one caveat is that you either gotta host it yourself, or get someone else to host it for you. Framasoft (mentioned above), has a nextcloud instance. It works on just about every single platform, and can integrate with an absurd amount of services. Here’s a list of providers that work with nextcloud, and what different apps they have installed on their server.

I personally use Disroot, because they’re a local (as in, my country) non-profit that offer about 2gb of free storage, and then for about 15 cents per GB per month you can get more storage if you want. They also have an email service which is hella neat. Their one main rule is Do Not Use For Business Purposes, because they’re here to help the individual folks, not companies.
