so I've just read the Hunger Games trilogy for the first time in my life. It completely went past me when it was popular, I hadn't seen the films and had known virtually nothing about the story until I started reading the books a few weeks ago.

From the first chapters, I was completely hooked. I finished reading book three last night around midnight, on a bus, under a flickering light. Very dramatic, yes, but I actually couldn't put the book down until the story was over.

I loved it. I loved it enough to look past some YA cliches and plot-driving conveniences. I loved it so much that I had to think a while about the previous sentence because I couldn't remember what issues I had with thd book. No, I want to discuss a lot of things, of course, but this post isn't about that.

So what is it about?

So, I got to the end of book three (should I call them by the names or is "book 1-2-3" acceptable?), and the whole last third of the Mockingjay was... off?? The last chapter shattered me. It felt unfair. It felt wrong. I can't properly verbalise what I was expecting and what exactly was wrong. Maybe it's just the unwillingness to let go of a story that you genuinely liked.

My question to the community, if there is one still, is what's the general consensus?

Is the ending liked?

Is it considered good?

I can't make up my mind. I liked how realistic was the last part of the book, how painfully real it was in the way that revolutions aren't a happy time and PTSD is unavoidable for someone in Katniss'es circumstances. But, but!..

the thing about cracking open a long-established popular ship tag on ao3 is that it allows you to be extraordinarily picky, and i think it must be the closest thing i will ever experience to being filthy rich. i scroll along at super speed like no today i am only interested in fics with this precise range of words and one of these three tags. only authors i’ve heard of, please. hmm, i suppose i could consider an unknown quantity given its apparent popularity with the people, but… no, no, this summary doesn’t do it for me. no particular reason, it’s just… eh, i don’t need to explain myself. bring me 50 more like this for me to choose from and we’ll see.
