Pickman chuckles softly at her response, but immediately goes quiet as she lines up her shot, not wanting to break her concentration. His eyes go back out to the target, watching. Just moments later, he drops dead in a single shot, just as he had expected. He turns to look at Victoria again, smiling, about to compliment her shot when she speaks.
He pauses, thinking, the nods. “Good point. Come on.” He straightens up, dusting the dirt off his suit. “I assume they heard the shot so depending on what kind of person they are, they’ll have either ran or came to investigate. The latter is easiest, but the former gives us a fun chase.” He looks around, listening, trying to find out what the other person had done.
Victoria straightened as well, casually slinging her rifle back so it rested easily on her form. She’d be lying if she said her heart wasn’t beating a little faster, blood warming in her veins. The idea of a chase, well, that made it all the better.
“Either way I think we should move. If they’re running we’ll have an easier time catching them, and if they’re coming to investigate, well, I’d rather not be an easy target.”
Snipers didn’t tend to do well once they were found, after all.

lepuscor:
“Well…” He inhaled the tension that caked the air, it filled up his lungs, it almost overflowed in his windpipe so it felt too bothersome to breathe; but he couldn’t admit to that, he felt, because he tried too, much too hard to keep up this steel exterior of a man that barely broke down even at the slightest inconvenience. No, he had a reputation to hold… It was an awkward question, one he didn’t know exactly how to answer, it was impossible to know how the EXACT income could come out when the possibilities & paths were endless; maybe he was the forgiving type, maybe he held grudges locked tight in an iron fist. He didn’t want to give Vicky the wrong idea & wind up hurting her even more than she already was… It was a difficult question, everything was difficult. “If it were me, yes, I’d forgive them—because I’m a fool. A fool in love. They could tear out my entire arm & I’d still love them… maybe that’s foolish, maybe you’d just leave, maybe you’d kill them, maybe you’d pity me. But I, personally, can never hate the most important person in my life because without them it feels impossible to breathe. How much do you love this guy, Vicky?”
He was right. The answer was foolish, and she couldn’t stop the knee jerk reaction that it was weak. It was weak to care, weak to give second chances. And Victoria, she was never weak.
She laughed, a whisper of a sound, careless in its sorrow.
“I don’t know.” She felt like she should have wept with that admission, made a dramatic declaration, but such theatrics were for people who didn’t look in the mirror and know exactly how broken they were. And Victoria, she knew every crack in her ivory facade.
“I don’t know if I ever loved him, if I can love...anyone. How can I know when I don’t think it’s something I’ve ever really felt? Because here’s the thing,” she held up a finger, lazily moving her empty glass with abandon, “it’s not that I don’t want to find someone to be happy with. I’m a sucker for romance, I used to dream about dancing, star gazing, and finally feeling like I was enough for someone, but I think I’m too fucked up. Every love I’ve known has been twisted with hatred in some way or another, and I’m afraid. Loving someone means letting them get close, it means letting them see who you are, who you really are, and nothing is scarier to me.”

Doctor Who — The Vampires of Venice {Sentence Starters}
“Yeah, that’s not helping.“
“No! Take your hands off me!“
“Remember us. Dream of us.“
“We think we just saw a vampire.“
“Be brave, my girl. Make me proud.“
“You can promise me that, can you?“
“Go crazy. Hit it with a stick. Anything.”
“You mourn, but you live. I know. I did it.“
“I tell you to do something, and you do it.”
“No, you’re not coming in. Just stop there.“
“It’s fine. Drop me back where you found me.“
“I told you, you can’t go back and change time.“
“I’ll make you a deal. An answer for an answer.“
“You should be in a museum. Or in a mausoleum.“
“It would have been you. It should have been you.“
“I’ve been scared. More scared than I thought was…”
“That’s good news? What is wrong with you people?“
“The longer we wait, the greater the risk of discovery.“
“It can’t keep happening like this. This is how they go.“
“Stay. With us. Please. Just for a bit. I want you to stay.“
“Can your conscience carry the weight of another death?”
“Explain yourself. Why have you brought me this imbecile?“
“Right. Okay, I’ll go first. If anything happens to me, go back.”
“And the girl who pushed me away, her face, like an animal…”
“I mean, I’ve been around a bit, but really that’s… that's e u g h.”
“Funny how you can say something in your head and it sounds fine.”
“I haven’t told you for seven hours that I love you, which is a scandal.”
“No worries. You were just doing your job. Sorry, what exactly is your job?“
“Listen, we’re going to get you out of here, but I need you to tell me what’s going on.“
“Oh, the life out there, it dazzles. I mean, it blinds you to the things that are important.“
“You have no idea how dangerous you make people to themselves when you’re around.“
“You know what’s dangerous about you? It’s not that you make people take risks, it’s that you make them want to impress you.”

“So I’ve seen first hand,” Pickman responds easily, taking his eyes off the target - a lone raider, who had wandered out too far from his gang - to look at his companion. “But please, go on, I wouldn’t mind another demonstration of your skills.” He was in a good mood, as he tended to be during his and Victoria’s outings like this. He had grown so accustomed to being alone that he had forgotten how much he enjoyed other’s company. “As I said, it’ll be a difficult shot, with the bits of hanging cloths and scrap obscuring him when he moves, but I have no doubt you’ll make it look easy.”
Victoria flashed a smile at him that was just as confident as it was dangerous. “Keep saying sweet things like that and I might just blush.”
The almost playful atmosphere around her melted away when she turned her attention to the scope on her rifle. It had been a while since she’d hunted someone like this, but the familiarity of it had returned to her all too easily. She watched her target move, his image disappearing between old fabric and forgotten bits of junk, and the world seemed to melt away. She watched him stop and raise a hand to his mouth to call out, and Victoria released her breath.
The man dropped from her sight, blood spilling from the gaping wound in the side of his neck. She frowned, almost pouting. It wasn’t quite what she had been aiming for, but she supposed the end result was ultimately the same.
She pulled back from her scope, brushing the stray hairs from her braid back out of her face. A sigh escaped her, a content sound.
“You know,” she mused, “if he was looking for someone it's only right that we pick up where he left off. It would be a shame if his friend was left to wander alone in the wastes, don’t you think?”

Apologies
“I need to apologize” “I’m sorry, okay?” “I’m not going to apologize” “I think you owe me an apology” “Please, just accept my apology” “You don’t need to apologize for telling the truth” “What am I supposed to be apologizing for?” “You have to let me apologize” “I’m so sorry” “Never apologize for that” “Please forgive me” “Why won’t you let me apologize?” “Saying that you’re sorry doesn’t fix anything” “You think you can just apologize and then everything will be fine?” “I’ve already apologized” “You don’t need to apologize” “You don’t even know what it is that you’re supposed to be apologizing for” “I feel terrible” “How many times to I have to apologize?” “I owe you an apology” “I’m begging your forgiveness” “‘Sorry’ isn’t good enough” “Don’t ruin your apology with an excuse” “I’m not apologizing” “Is it too late to say that I’m sorry?” “What good’s an apology?” “I’m sorry that I hurt you” “An apology would be a good start” “I accept your apology” “What are you apologizing for?” “I don’t need another apology” “Will you accept my apology?”

vinnysouther:
For her sake, Vince huffed a laugh. “C’mon, Fisk. You’ve taught me more about using my feminine wiles than I’ll ever get to use. Don’t sell yourself short, babe.” Once he had turned to fetch the liquor, the forced smile on his face shifted into a worried frown.
Vince returned with the neck of a vodka bottle in one hand and a pair of plastic glasses pinched in the other. Wordlessly he seated himself next to Victoria and poured each of them two finger’s worth of vodka. “Sorry about the glassware. All my nice glasses got cigarette ashes in ‘em–my, uh. Ma came by recently.” He handed Victoria her cup and took a sip from his own, stifling the cringe that came with the taste of straight vodka.
A beat passed, and Vince found he couldn’t stay off the subject. “Will you at least tell me what he looked like?”
The mention of his mother made Victoria blink. The fact that he did, in fact, have parents had never crossed her mind. The fact that they would bother to come visit left her with a sensation she opted not to dig too much into.
Taking the cup, Victoria lowered her beer and took a moment to take a swig. A long swig.
She didn’t bother hiding her reaction to the burn, eyes closing tightly in a wince but for a beat.
She sighed, setting the beer down so she could pass a hand through her hair, Her eyes shut. “It was dark but he was tall. Short hair, like a buzz that had grown too long. Gaunt features. His hands were...nervous, maybe, like he hadn’t done this before or he was too excited for it. His eyes, they were jut like-” her brows furrowed, creasing her forehead as she redirected her thoughts with the help of another swallow of vodka, “they were green.”

SENTENCE STARTERS | RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER
❝ No amount of money is going to get us through these mountains… ❞ ❝ You’re almost there! Wait until you see this view! ❞ ❝ Even if we don’t find anything up here, you should still be proud! ❞ ❝ Shit, you’re gonna give me a heart attack! Are you ok? ❞ ❝ Do you really think we’ll find this lost city? ❞ ❝ If I was going to hide a lost city, this might just be the godforsaken place I’d do it. ❞ ❝ We’re close to something big…I can feel it! ❞ ❝ Let’s take this slow and steady, just stay with me! ❞ ❝ Holy shit! I don’t think I can make that jump… ❞ ❝ I can’t hold you! The rope is slipping! ❞ ❝ I saw…something…Something that I can’t explain. ❞ ❝ Don’t go down this road…You know where it leads. ❞ ❝ We’re heading into a war zone now…You’d better be sure about this. ❞ ❝ You’re wasting your time. There’s nothing out here. ❞ ❝ They’re already here! We’ve got to get inside! ❞ ❝ How stunning…We made it! ❞ ❝ You’re a smart woman/man…I suspect you already know who I am. ❞ ❝ What the hell is going on here!? You’re starting to scare me… ❞ ❝ I’ve lost too many friends! I don’t want to lose you too! ❞ ❝ If this treasure is real, we’ve got to find it first! ❞ ❝ I wish this pain wasn’t so familiar… ❞ ❝ Refusing to use the door again, I see… ❞ ❝ Well, I’ve decided that I should be your assistant! ❞ ❝ There’s nobody I’d rather have by my side than you. ❞ ❝ Too cramped to fight…We need to draw that thing out. ❞ ❝ I killed those people to survive. I suspect you did too. ❞ ❝ If I see you again, I’ll put an arrow in your throat. ❞ ❝ Let’s hope the old proverb about the “enemy of my enemy” still holds true. ❞ ❝ You were to be my eyes…I expected you to see. ❞ ❝ You must know what is at stake with this operation. ❞ ❝ It doesn’t have to be this way. We seek the same thing. ❞ ❝ You want a purpose in your life? I can provide that. ❞ ❝ You and I, we can still be on the same side of history. Think about it. ❞ ❝ Sorry, but I’m not feeling particularly trusting right now… ❞ ❝ Careful! We don’t want to attract attention. ❞ ❝ I cannot wait to leave this frozen hell! ❞ ❝ Life has not been kind to either of us, but I swore I’d always protect you. ❞ ❝ I promise you, all of this will be worth it in the end. ❞ ❝ So, what makes you risk so much just to come here? ❞ ❝ We seem to be making a habit of saving each other. ❞ ❝ You’re certainly resilient, I’ll give you that. ❞ ❝ I can see you mean well, but good intentions won’t keep you alive out here. ❞ ❝ Lay down your weapons or you will be shot! ❞ ❝ I’ve come so far…I’ve endured so much… ❞ ❝ I’ll beat you until you stop breathing, and then the next guy will tell me what I want to know. ❞ ❝ I’m glad to have you as an ally…For now. ❞ ❝ I fear this battle is far from over… ❞ ❝ You spilled blood for us…I want to help. ❞ ❝ Your people have been through so much, yet you continue to fight… ❞ ❝ Kill an unarmed woman/man? Cold even for you… ❞ ❝ Reconsider my offer! Before it’s too late! ❞ ❝ I can’t leave you out here alone! ❞ ❝ I almost lost you once…I’m not going to lose you again! ❞ ❝ I’ll make them see that you were right all along. I promise. ❞ ❝ Are you aware of what we’re going to face? ❞ ❝ Your loyalty is strong…I admire you. ❞ ❝ Even my patience has limits…Tell me what you know. Now! ❞ ❝ I am so sorry for getting you into this mess… ❞ ❝ If there’s nothing more you can do, get to someplace safe. ❞ ❝ We survive together, or we die alone. Now let’s go! ❞ ❝ The enemy’s too fast! We’ll never hit him! ❞ ❝ You have no weapons, no allies, and no hope! ❞ ❝ This place will become your tomb! ❞ ❝ You’re stronger than your father ever was! ❞ ❝ Your father begged for his life, and when that didn’t work, he begged for yours! ❞ ❝ In all my years, I’ve met few as extraordinary as you. ❞ ❝ I’m sorry…All I wanted was to make a difference… ❞

vinnysouther:
Victoria’s hand on his arm brought Vince out of his anger–gradually at first, then with the loose promise of revenge later the boil settled into a simmer. He tucked his tongue into his bottom lip. It was tempting not to let it go, to insist that Victoria pointed him right to her attacker and let him unleash hell, but the tenderness in her touch and the rawness of her voice stopped Vince in his tracks.
Vince brought his hand up to cover Victoria’s and exhaled. Later, he reminded himself, later, later. He only barely managed to resist fantasizing about what he would do to the guy later.
“Fine. But only because you told me to.” He rubbed at his jaw–the clenching was hard enough that it actually ached a bit. “I’ll get the bottle opener. Got liquor, too, you know.”
“Liquor is always appreciated, and I think we could both use some right about now.”
She let her hand linger under his for a moment before finally pulling away. Adjusting the beer on her eye, she managed a weak but thankful smile. Already she could feel the fear starting to slowly simmer away, being replaced with shame.
She stepped back from him, moving to make herself comfortable on Vince’s couch.
“Remind me, when we have more of a chance, that I still need to show you how to make a sour mix for whisky. If you learn anything from me, that should be it.”

vinnysouther:
Vince’s jaw clenched. His mind raced with the possibilities of how that encounter might have ended if Victoria hadn’t been armed–if she hadn’t been able to fight back at all. What was the guy trying to get? What would he have taken, had he had the chance?
Vince’s gaze darted from Victoria’s bruise, to her eyes, to the gun on his coffee table, and back to her black eye again. “What alley?” he asked shortly. “Where?”
She saw the look in his eyes, his gaze flicking to the gun, the way his jaw clenched. Her hand reached out for his arm before she could stop it, and her touch was so tender not even she was prepared for it.
“Hey,” She almost sounded like another person, like someone who died years ago, “don’t worry about it, not right now. Let’s just relax for a bit, have a beer, and then we can worry about getting revenge later. I’m...still kind of shaken up about it, if I’m being honest.”
And for once, she was.
