Yay, official announcement of Li Yun Rui & Meng Ziyi pairing up again for 《尚公主》 Shang Gong Zhu. While I’m glad we are not getting more Blossoms / Love / Glory, the current English title of Tigers Sniff The Rose is … A Choice. The title technically just means marrying a princess, but the usual word used for marrying (a woman) ‘娶 qu’ replaced by ‘尚 Shang’ to signify that the man is marrying up / into royalty / ruling class.

Supposedly there’s been some fan wars going on between LYR & MZY camps recently (no idea about the details, I’ve given up fandom & prefer to enjoy my fictional dramas in peace) but I’m glad it didn’t get in the way of them working together again! ❤️

Summary of the novel:

温雅、情商极高的从小人物一步步爬上去的宰相vs冷情妩媚、脾气大的典型公主。女主渣，男主心眼多如马蜂窝.

It's middle of 2025 and The Glory 雁回时 is the only drama I completed this year?? I did also finish Reacher S1 -3, but it was a watch-with-the-husband type of show so ... doesn't count.

Moonlight Mystique 白月梵星 : Technically I watched till the last episode but I ff through 80% of the main couple's storyline, this was one that hinged purely on the secondary couple.

Under The Moonlight 锦囊妙录: This was one that should have hit by all accounts. I love mysteries, the acting and production were all on point... but the ML grated on me so much that I dropped it after 2 cases. Apparently he has a well done growth arc but somehow everything else about the show (including the FL) doesn't excite me enough to stick around for that.

The Blossoming Love 千朵桃花一世开: I watched till ep13,14 maybe? It was inoffensive but that's about it. It probably didn't help that I was terribly distracted by Zhang Bin Bin's styling in this drama in a bad way.

Prisoner of Beauty 折腰 : It's been a while since the FL is actually the 倾国倾城 beauty that the other characters say she is and I quite enjoyed the main couple's interaction/storyline in the first 10ish episodes but the plot & OTP was never really ... exciting? Then I read spoilers of how the rest of the drama went and that took out my remaining interest in it.

That's probably the problem I've been having with 2025 dramas? None of the OTP excites me at all. :( Fu Ling x Chong Zhao's hate to love relationship was the only sequel-worthy one for me.

Maybe it's an age thing, maybe it's 25+ years of Asian drama watching that's making everything feel so done and done-ded that my interest levels are going into negative territory.

None of the airing Cdramas caught my attention after I finished ‘The Glory’, so I went poking around lakorns again. It’s been so long since my last lakorn I can’t even remember what it was!

Clicked into Good Heavens! I'm a Goose Not a Swan and ep1 was pretty funny. I’m so out of touch with lakorns that I only recognized Joy playing the mama-san character 😌 but at least I managed to catch the Love Destiny & Ann Thongprasom references which got a few laughs of out of me.

Love Destiny actually didn’t hold my attention despite its immense popularity, here’s hoping this lakorn with a similar set up will continue to entertain~

loveee someone pointing out 棋子 being a wordplay on 妻子 in this context where the deal fyx literally offered to zhy was for her to be his wife and he be her strategist, for zhy to turn it around on him at her disposal. an elegant and implicit takedown of that "你做我的妻子 我做你的谋士" line that i never would have imagined even be remotely addressed again (after zhy literally rebuking him in that moment for trying to take advantage of a woman), since she ended up entering the arrangement anyway. basically, to be your 妻子 wife is to be your 棋子 object of manipulation... but she can be her own strategist and you're just her chess piece... 😌😌😌

Though Han Yan was taken aback in the moment, she actually doesn’t think much about this kiss subsequently lol. Girl has more important things to take care of 😅

Getting harder and harder to find Cnovels that catch my attention. I typically read only period novels, not a fan of xianxia.

Some that I've read / attempted to read in the past year.

《灯花笑》 千山茶客 Deng Hua Xiao by Qian Shan Cha Ke

Finally~ a novel from QSCK that I enjoy. No rebirths no second chances, just a girl's journey to avenge her family. 个人偏好决绝型人物，所以女主挺对我的胃口。

《世婚》 意千重 Generational Marriage by Yi Qian Chong

Typically in a rebirth story the FL avoids the pitfalls of her first life which frequently involves an unhappy marriage with a scummy husband. For Generational Marriage, the FL tries her darndest to avoid marrying the ML whom she thought abandoned her during hard times, but life forced them together again. It's a slow burn slice of life novel that has the FL seeing her former life in a different light now that she has a second go at it and her struggles of opening her heart to the ML.

《洛九针》 Luo Jiu Zhen by Xi Xing

This is my second fav book of Xi Xing after The First Marquis. It's a jianghu story (already a win) with a dash of court politics and soul swapping.

《白篱梦》 希行 Bai Li's Dream by Xi Xing

Xi Xing was upfront that she was trying something different with this novel and it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. I hung on till almost 200 chapters and finally threw in the towel cos if I still didn't care about the main character by then, I probably wouldn't care about her ending. I still enjoyed Xi Xing's writing but the set up was too Inception-y for my tastes.

《名门医女》 希行 Female Doctor from Prestigious Family by Xi Xing

I'd say this is a solid novel of the standard time travel trope by a female doctor. It was engaging from start to finish and I was happy with it when I finished up the last chapter but~ set up/story/character wise nothing special that makes it stand out among the many novels I go through.

Apparently a drama (莫染 Mo Ran) adapted from this novel was filmed back in 2021 but let's just say the trailer doesn't inspire any interest so not a loss that it still hasn't aired in 2025.

《今岁无忧》 十尾兔 This Year Without Worries by Shi Wei Tu

As someone who grew up reading wuxia novels, this was such a breathe of fresh air among the sea of 甜宠/重生/宅斗 dime a dozen plots. Very much recommended if you like jianghu set up stories.

《嫁给一个死太监》 零落成泥 I Married an Exasperating Eunuch by Ling Luo Cheng Ni

I'm about halfway through and still undecided if I'll continue. The interactions between the main couple is actually quite funny but overall it's a fluffy piece and fluffy is generally not my thing.

《春日宴》 白鹭成双 Spring Banquet by Bai Lu Cheng Shuang

This seems to be rather popular but the prose in Chinese is... rather simplistic? I gave up after 1 chapter. 作者文笔对我来说还是很重要的。
