Process Book #8
The team is doing well this week, appears well ahead of the final week. This will give us some time to flush out any remaining details of the presentation. We’ve come together nicely leveraging all individuals core strengths as part of the project. In hindsight, it’s surprising that we’ve worked so well together given we’ve not been more defined in responsibilities up front. We’ve built a solid business concept, financial projections and an overall meaningful propositions to enable teachers have more at their fingertips. Our team has also built out a logo, presentation format and a visual display on web and mobile of our solutions. Thanks to Margaret and Russell! All in all it’s shaping up nicely towards the end of the semester.

VISION STATEMENT
We create smarter kids through enlightened teachers.
CRITERIA
We used our vision statement as a filter for solutions to the problem of making the kids learn good.
PRAGMATIC CONSIDERATIONS
We narrowed focus to K-5 for pragmatic considerations of our workloadWe narrowed focus on a teacher-focused platform (not kid-focused)

Process Book #5
We had a very productive week having brainstorming both during class and our Monday evening meetings. We flushed out many possible solutions in how to address the prompt question:
PROMPT/QUESTION:
Ideation. Week 11.
What is a product or service that can comprehensively address the shortcomings of American K-12 education? Specifically, we want to think of products that can provide:
1. Increased Student Autonomy
2. Integrated Digital Learning
3. Improved soft skills (socializing and live interactions)
TO DO
Research what percentage of US teachers have computers/laptops to use
What percentage of US students have computers/laptops to use
IDEAS
Software to help teachers layout classroom environments
Apps for teacher classroom layout
IKEA-style augmented reality layout app / visualizer
Digital desks - integrated screens, charger, computer
Touch screen virtual labs for chemistry, biology
Virtual chemistry set
Virtual frog dissection
Maybe virtual tabletop
Teacher student inventory app - track learning styles, moods of students and make sure they are all catered to
Daily curriculum reminders - ‘oh it's socialization time’ - taps app - kids all get tummy time / rug time
Social aspects for teachers - socializing / share best practices / professional
Computer science classes taught MOOC style / partner with Lynda or Khan academy
Science classes taught that way as well - get specialty subject masters to chime in to spread teachings of the best teachers on earth to all students.
Modular furniture integrated for alternating teamwork, solo work, autonomous work
Trailers/cargo containers/prefab pre-wired classrooms for extending digital literacy and internet access
Integration to platforms such as 2U/Blackboard
Tie in to chromebooks or mac
Include software / monthly Software as a Service (SAAS) costs in the chromebook lease per kid/per head
School-in-a-box - single platform for administrators, teachers and kids
Teacher grading - simplify/automate test taking to spare teachers grading and also randomize questions to mitigate cheating
Async teaching of subjects and then offshore monitored chat boards for kids’ Q&A
Hit up Chan-Zuckerberg initiative for startup capital/grants
Wrap school SAAS, chromebook, and maintenance into a single low monthly payment
Tablet + keyboard with all of the text books loaded on it
Software and infrastructure to integrate smartphones as second screens, live polling/surveys/test taking/quizzes/attendance
Robot teacher
Hologram teacher
Virtual reality chemistry set
virtual reality history where you are in the battle of gettysburg
Augmented reality biology where you do a fake dissection of a frog (or person!)
Video game integration - playable puzzles, video game breaks, motor skill workshops
Pure creation moments - knitting, sewing, construction, lego breaks
Skype to learn spanish from spanish speakers - virtual pen pals
Robocop boardroom scene teachers - live video conference via swivelling monitor with some inputs and video to observe class
Holodeck where you are transported to ancient greece to talk to socrates - star trek meets Bill & Ted.
Immersive virtual classroom where all the walls are touchscreen for instant change in mood and presentation
Desk building sets - kids have to construct their own environment at the start of the year (like early Amazon hires)
Education pods. Kids put into immersive pods that have monitor, screen, audio for immersive experience and 1-1 mentoring by subject.
Pair programming desks - kids taught teamwork and fundamentals of programming by pair programming like the pros do, huddled around a desk with one keyboard/mouse/monitor to work together to solve problems.
Schooltray - a tray with keyboard, mouse, touchpad, and pop/fold-up display so kid can interact with a variety of screens, computers and manipulables around the classroom
Robot dog to teach empathy and befriend students. Each student gets a robot dog they have to care for that can also teach lessons or serve as a learning aid
Hologram Tupac teacher. Not actually Tupac but maybe for a 90s rap lecture. Live teacher can take over after hologram lecture from scientist, historical figure, native Mandarin speaker wraps up a precanned lecture
Students have to design and teach their own lesson on a subject area they become ‘experts’ in.
Why are lectures delivered live anyway? We need an adult for crowd control, questions and tutoring but the lecture and lesson portion could likely be automated or at least delivered via augmented automation.
Responsive classroom where kids can control various objects via IOT to help them understand programming, electronics, physics. Kids can write programs to control objects, lights, motorized furniture, toy robots.
Blockchain permanent records
Tablet textbook you can take notes in
Wearables for PE - help students achieve better results
Mindfulness meditation pods
Yoga/nap mat that records pressure to correct for balance and encourages kids
Treat dispensing quiz machine - right answers get candy or release balls etc for recess
School Management System where student mental health, preferences, learning styles, and external stressors could all be tracked and addressed by instructors, with reminders and exercises suggested

Process Book 4
Our group continued this week in vetting out and redefining the problem. Each team member took a select group of material and researched it. Mine was reviewing the history on traditional classroom in hopes of learning more about how and why they’re set up the way they are today. I was able to find a variety of research in this area:
Desks:
https://edtechmagazine.com/k12/article/2012/10/visual-history-school-desks
Blackboard:
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/education/2014/10/a_history_of_the_blackboard_how_the_blackboard_became_an_effective_and_ubiquitous.html
The building itself:
https://mosaicscience.com/story/school-design-through-decades/
Traditional Education Defined:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_education
Overall we’re able to redefine the problem to be simply defined as:
How today’s classroom environment is failing our kids for their future
This redefined will guide our process moving forward towards our final presentation.
Overall our team is working well together, dividing and conquering specifics area to accelerate us towards the final deliverable. Feeling great about the path forward.

Process Book #3
This week I spent quite a bit of time on morphological analysis which was pretty cumbersome to get my head around. Based on previous experiences around analysis, this was a new and very different approach. I found the process to be thought provoking but with little value at end of the exercise.
Research this week was comprised of many websites one in particular that was very useful ASDC Website: Link. This repository of information has taken a cross section and explored many parts of the current educational system and areas needing focus. They’ve also provided a new model focused on the “Whole Child”. This approach resonates with me as it’s a more holistic approach then the current one size fits all approach in our public education system. It allows educators to be focused not only on area’s of opportunity with each child, but also focusing on areas the student is strong in.

Success at First
When Team 1 is done with this project, we’ll have a cleanly designed presentation that presents the main problem we identified in education, supporting materials to problem and solution ideation/ exploration on how we pursued to solve the problem. We will wrap up the presentation in a nice bow articulating the solution, reasons why, the upsides and possible risks with the proposed solution. I will then go and get a tropical drink given I will be in Singapore at that time.

The Destination and Journey
The subject matter with a problem to solve: Education, more specifically, Education as it is related to making America intelligent again. This encompasses training for the 21st century economy and relates to themes touched on in books such as The Fourth Industrial Revolution by Klaus Schwab.
Our professional rationales for why we should be part of a team are as follows:
Margaret Design Thinking & Looking at Sideways Perspective
Aileen Multidisciplinary
Russell Technology
Eric Business
In addition, we have personal interests in the subject, varying from having two school-age children to our enrollment in USC’s education program.

Contingency Management
We collectively decided on a meeting framework to hold us all accountable and established the norms described below for our group.
Delegation & Decision-Making:
“Divide and Conquer”: We all like the idea of deciding general goals in broad strokes by consensus. Then tasks are delegated, granting our team members autonomy with that task.
Communication:
We will primarily use a private Slack channel (“P&P Channel”). We exchanged emails and mobile numbers for escalation in case of an emergency.
Documentation:
We are all happy using Google Docs for collaboration.
Consequences:
We are hoping that the set weekly meeting heads off issues before we need to discipline anyone.
Rewards:
Upon successful completion, we plan to celebrate with wine.
Public recognition for successes and shortcomings so we can learn and improve for future milestones
Norms:
Group when we need to and individual contributions when we need to
Respect delegation and run full force towards milestones
100% on time attendance for our group meeting every Monday 7:30pm
Understanding Limits:
Narrowing down specific achievable issues to address what is impacting the current state of education
Realistic timelines and what is possible during our last ~8 weeks together
Understanding and being empathetic to team members outside commitments (e.g. work, family, etc)
Establish Reasonable and Feasible Goals
Team’s Intentions:
Our intentions are to propose reasonable Educational Reform solutions to make America Intelligent Again
We expect we will celebrate and learn together
Team Gaps:
We currently don’t have any educators on our direct team, but we have many K-12 educators in close network.
We currently don’t have any K-12 Administration Leadership on our team, but do have in close network.

Education Project
By being part of the Education Project, it will expose to our current education system from a variety of different angles outside of my current perspective of parent. I will be able to gain new insight on the issues surrounding the problem as well as work being done to evolve the state of education locally and nationally. https://goo.gl/images/zvv78C
