I'll be waiting (ch. 3)
When a wound puts you in the way of your almost ex-husband, the months without talking are over and perhaps it is the opportunity to resume your marriage or end it.

Thank you so much for your love to this story. This chapter is probably very millenial, hehe, but I love Friends and The Sandlot.
Chapter 3
After the rounds, Robby had a little time to breathe and think. He remembered the last time that you talked to him. It was his birthday last year, you waited outside the ED with a present (a new book), still trying to reach him.
“Hi, Robby”. He turned to see you. You were smiling but didn’t reach your eyes.
“Hi, y/n… mhm, how are you?” You came close to him, but respecting the space between you two. You handed him the book. “Happy birthday”. He took it, read the title and his eyes came back to you. “Thank you. You didn’t need to do anything-” “Yes, Robby, I know, but I WANTED to do it”. She looked upset, of course. “Well, again, thank you”. For a moment, both looked each other in the eyes, knowing that there were a lot of things to say, but not saying anything. She was the one to break the silence. “Well, have a goodnight, Robby”. Both nodded their heads and part ways. This year he only received a message, but he didn’t reply.
He knew that it was time to let it go, ask for a divorce and end your misery. But he was selfish, or at least that’s what Dana had said to him; he wasn’t ready to let you go. And it seems that you weren’t ready either. Janey had told him that you were still in touch with her and Jake, and from time to time, Abbot mentioned that you asked about his wellbeing.
He walked to the nurse station to talk to Dana. “Do you know at what time she started her shift?” She looked up to answer him. “Who? Your wife?” He took a breath before answering her. “Yes, my wife”. She smiled slightly, knowing that she was bothering him and he couldn’t do anything. “I didn’t ask her, if you’re not busy, you could do it”. He put his head in his hands. “You’re killing me, Smalls”. Dana laughed at him. “Oh, now you’re citing movies… again”. That was a habit he took from you, you were a fan of watching movies and series in your spare time, and sometimes you used to say phrases of the characters as part of your daily way of speaking.
At south 4, you were talking talk with Perlah while another person took your blood.
“It hurts more right now”.
She took your vitals again. “It’s normal, the shock is wearing off. I’m gonna tell Robby if we could give you something while you wait for the exams”.
“Is it Robby’s case? I mean, you could talk to Collins or Langdon…”
She laughed slightly and shook her head. “I don’t think Robby wants someone else to look after you”.
As if you were summoning him, at that moment Robby entered. “Perlah, what happens?”
Both of you looked at him, and she answered. “She feels more pain now, I said her that I was going to talk to you, see if we could give her something”.
As he listened to her, he closed and opened his fists, nervous. “Let me take a look…”
Robby approached and began to do his physical examination. He knew Jack had done one, but he needed to make sure things hadn’t gotten worse. You were already in a robe. When he finished his examination, looked back at Perlah, “Please, call and tell them that we need those exams as soon as possible”. She nodded her head and did what he told her.
“Soon, sweetheart, we need to make sure that there are no fractures or torn ligaments before proceeding”.
You knew that he was saying something, but your mind went blank after sweetheart. One part of you said that it didn’t mean anything, just a comfort word for a patient in pain. But the other part, louder than the first, said that he cared for you, that he still had feelings for you, the proof wasn’t the word, but the way that he said it, like he meant it.
“Yes… OK…” You didn’t even know what you were answering, but he was seeing you waiting for a reaction, so you said the first thing that you thought.
Once again, he squeezed your hand and walked away.
And while you were waiting for the exams, you remembered the first time that he told you sweetheart. You were on his couch, watching a rerun of Friends, when everyone knew about Monica and Chandler. You were friends at that moment; he was recently single again.
“Oh, the feelings…” It was the third time that you watched Friends, but the way that Chandler let everybody know his love for Monica always gets you.
“I can’t believe that you still get emotional, you already watched it”.
“I KNOW, but look how cute they are!”
“You are cuter than them, sweetheart”.
Suddenly everything felt different in the air, you looked at him and your stomach made flips like crazy. His eyes shined with something that you didn’t want to name, but you knew that was love.

Chapter 2
It was a weird morning. First, he forgot to start his coffee machine and now he must buy one on the road to the ED. Also, suddenly, the zipper of his second favorite hoodie didn’t want to function. He wasn’t a superstitious person, but deep down he knew that something wasn’t right today.
When he entered the ED, things looked as usual: busy and noisy. At least something was just like always. Or so he thought…
“Good morning, Ahmad”. The security guard looked at him like he was a ghost, not the attending physician.
“Good morning, Dr. Robby.”
Robby made a frown and kept walking to Jack and Dana, both were talking like something was wrong. And Robby’s stomach made a flip.
“Good morning. What’s happening? Why the long faces?”
Always the good friend and more sensitive, Dana broke the silence. “Listen, about an hour ago there was a little fight, nothing mayor, the security guards acted really fast, and no patient or companion were hurt, but one of our own was in the middle and took a fall.”
“So, I guess that they are here, right? And probably Gloria is gonna be up in my ass about it, that’s it?”
Dana and Jack exchanged looks before Jack spoke. “Yes, that’s part of what we needed to tell you. They are waiting for exams results and an x-ray in south 4. From what I observed, it’s only a dislocated shoulder and some scratches, nothing more.”
Robby looked at his friends, and something clicked in his mind, if something happened to one of their team, they had already said it, so, there was only one choice. “When are you gonna tell me my wife is the patient?” He didn’t want to get angry at them, they were trying to keep it as quiet as they can.
“What really happened?” Rooby looked at both, searching for answers, anxious.
This time, Dana spoke. “She was with the family of an oncological patient, just a kid… Anyway, from what I know from the nurses there, the father was abusive, the doctors called child’s service and everything went downhill.”
“How is she?” Robby looked at Jack.
“In pain, levels normal for a dislocated shoulder, but nothing else”.
“She hit her head?”
“No”.
Robby scratched his neck and squeezed his lips, took a breath and lowered his arms, as if preparing for an inevitable battle. “Alright, let’s go, Jack”.
He started walking, beside him, Abbot looked unimpressed but worried. “Look, brother, she’ll be fine, just a couple of weeks”.
“I know…”
“You could send someone else if you’re not ready to talk to her, she understands.”
Robby knew all that, but he wanted, no, he needed to see her. Look at her and make sure that she was as fine as she could be.
When they came to south 4, he inhaled and ran the curtain. There, in the bed, was the love of his life. She looked at both, her hands were trembling, Robby didn’t know if it was for the pain or the aftershock.
“Hello, Jack told me what happened to you”.
Robby came close to the bedside, he didn’t touch you, but it was the closest you have been in more than a year, and you became more nervous. “Yeah, everything was quickly, didn’t have time to react.”
“Did you hit your head?” Robby looked at you with clinical eyes, trying to see if the shoulder was the only problem.
“No, at least I don’t think so…”
“Then I’m ordering more exams, we need to rule out a concussion”.
Jack had that small smile that said a lot without saying anything. He knew that his friend probably was dying to touch you, but was too stubborn to do it, even to examinate your shoulder. They were looking at each other like a deer in the headlights. He cleared his throat. “OK, Robby, can we continue with the shift change? I’m sure that she would be the best patient, right, y/n?”
The look she gave him said that he was going to pay for that later, but he didn’t care, he cared about both. And he wanted to go to sleep.
“Yes, of course… I see you later”. Robby said to his wife, her hands still trembling, so he did what he always did when she was anxious and squeezed her hand before going out with Abbot. His heart was beating fast, and everything he could think about was the warmth of your hand.

I'll be waiting

Chapter 1
The sound of your last name was the reception for the ED, “Dr. Rovinavitch?”. It was really early, so, you know they were talking to you. You come close to the nurse station, “Hi, Bridget, could you tell me where Jack is?”. She sees the way that you were holding your arm, “What happened to you?”, “Rough fall, I think I have a dislocated shoulder”. She calls Abbot, while she directs you to one of the beds.
Abbot saw you and pursed his lips. “Well, good morning to you. What happened?”
“I was talking to the parents of a child with cancer, things are difficult at home, the father was really upset because child’s service was called, sooo he tried to hit his wife, I was in the way, he pushed me, I fell… you can imagine the rest.”
Like Kiara, you were part of the social service of the PTMH, but you work in pediatrics and family medicine.
Abbot ends up the evaluation, asks for exams while you watch your clock. “You have a hot date?”, “Naah, but you know that my shoulder is the problem, why the exams?” He looks at you and smiles, you have known him for many years, maybe he is your closest friend in the hospital, so, you know that he knows why you don’t wanna stay in the pit for long. “You know the rules, a job injury needs all the paper”. You shake your head, “But why?” You don’t wanna be whiny, but it’s seems that you can’t evade meeting your almost ex-husband.
Robby and you have been married for 5 years, you met him for almost 10 years, since you started working on the PTMH, forming a great friendship. When things ended with Heather, you and he came closer, and in just months you were married. Everyone questioned your choices, why so soon?, why don’t wait?, you’re just a rebound? But nothing mattered to you, you love him so much… But then the pandemic arrived… your marriage survived, but Robby’s miscommunication was even bigger, and you ended living separated for almost two years now.
“Look, honey, we have to do this right, you take your time off because of this and everything will be alright” Abbot, as usual, was right, you needed all the papers because Gloria and all the others would make a blind eye if there were no right procedures. So, you took air, “Fine, whatever”. One of the nurses come to take your history while you wait for all the exams that Abbot asked.
“Have you talked to Robby?” Abbot asks.
“No, you know that we don’t do that…”. You tried for months to fix your marriage. But Robby closed all communication with you. Jake, Jack, Dana and Kiara were usually your source of information about him.
Abbot sees you with a half-smile and crosses his arms. “Yes, but he would like to know that something happened to you, specially because he is about to come, and you now are a patient”.
You snort, as if he was going to approach you. You know perfectly well that he will keep his distance... as always. Probably will send Heather or Frank. “Yes, I’m a patient, but there are other doctors here, so…”
Now it’s time for Abbot to snort. “Yeah, honey, you don’t know half of it”.
He walks out of the room. You consider call him, to make a warning of your presence in the pit, but you can’t decide if is the right choice. While you are trying to decide, the day shift starts to arrive, and you know that Robby is coming.
