Rihanna Claps Back at MUFE
https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ga7dKKle774
Video via: YouTube- Fenty Beauty by Rihanna
It has been a whirlwind month for Rhianna, who is shining bright after the launch of her highly anticipated makeup line, Fenty Beauty. The collection offers foundation in 40 shades and skinsticks in 30 shades that range from Albinism to the deepest skin tones. The wide range of shades, uncommon in the beauty industry, has received rave reviews for being all-inclusive. The darkest shades have even sold out! But with most stories of success, come the haters from their hiding places. Make Up For Ever made a not-so-subtle jab at Fenty Beauty with an Instagram post that reads: “40 shades is nothing new to us. Since 2015, the #ultraHDfoundation released 40 shades for everyone’s unique skin tone understanding the difference between red and yellow undertones.”
Tumblr media
Photo via: Instagram
The shade in Make Up For Ever's post did not go unnoticed by the Rihanna Navy, who tipped off the singer to the comment. In true Rihanna style, badgalriri replied saying “lol. still ashy” followed by the shrug emoji and “shook.” These comments were screen captured by the fan Instagram account, The Shade Room. However, Rihanna and her fans were quick to notice that her remarks disappeared from the post's comments section, most likely deleted by Make Up For Ever to avoid embarrassment of being called out by Rihanna. This sneaky move didn't stop thousands of fans from dragging the brand by replying on the image mimicking Rihanna’s comments. If Make Up For Ever is shook now, just wait till her holiday collection launches.

Fate of L'Oreal Remains Unknown Amid Death of World's Wealthiest Woman
Tumblr media
Photo via: Sipa Press/Rex Features
The world’s richest woman and L’Oréal heiress, Liliane Bettencourt has died at the age of 94. According to her daughter Françoise Bettencourt-Meyers, Bettencourt passed away in the early morning on Thursday at her home in Paris. Bettencourt was just a month shy of her 95th birthday on October 21st. This year Forbes ranked Bettencourt as the richest woman in the world with a net worth of nearly $40 billion making her the world’s fourteenth richest person. L’Oréal CEO and chairman Jean-Paul Agon expressed his condolences to the family saying, “We all had a deep admiration for Liliane who has always watched over L’Oréal the company and its employees, who was very attached to its success and development.”
Tumblr media
Bettencourt left the board of the company in 2012, but she continued to dominate the headlines most notoriously with the “Bettencourt Affair.” The "Bettencourt Affair" covers numerous scandals dating back to World War II. So many that a book even chronicles the unimaginable tangled web that is the "Bettencourt Affiar" written by Tom Sancton. However, the most notable rumor to come to light is her daughter Françoise's accusation that her mother was mentally incompetent and had been swindled by her longtime friend and photographer François Marie Bainer who over the years received generous gifts totaling 1bn euros from Bettencourt including cash, real estate, life insurance policies and a Picasso painting. Another scandal erupted out of this in 2010 when Bettencourt was accused of making illegal payments to French government officials including Nicolas Sarkozy.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Penguinrandomhouse.com
While, their family has had their fair share of dirty laundry, the future of L’Oréal remains uncertain. The Bettencourt family owns 33% of L’Oréal, while the Swiss company Nestle owns a 23% stake. L’Oréal stock has soared since Bettencourts death amid speculation of a Nestle buyout. There is an agreement between Nestle and the Bettencourts to not increase stake, but this will expire in six months, leaving way for Nestle to buy up all of L’Oréal or get out before the industry hits its peak. The worry is that this will do very little for Nestles primary business of food, even though it will reinforce their skincare assets as L’Oréal owns Lancôme, Urban Decay, Maybelline, Clarasonic, Khiel’s, Garnier, Essie, NYX and many more. The substantial risk Nestle would have to consider is whether the cosmetic industry has already seen its climax. While this is a risky deal, Nestle could potentially buy the remaining 77% for $120 billion, if the Bettencourts are willing to sell.

Fresh Faced Celebs
Long gone of the days that it was necessary to apply a full face of makeup. The no makeup trend is here for the long haul. Celebs like Alicia Keys, Ronda Rousey, Adele, Lady Gaga, Cameron Diaz, Emma Roberts, Chelsea Handler and so many others go bare faced, not only on Instagram with #IWokeUpLikeThis or #NoMakeup, but out in public.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Twitter @ladygaga
Magazines are catching on and in the latest issue of Glamour on newsstands now features Mila Kunis posed on the back cover wearing only face serum and eye cream.
Tumblr media
Photo via: usmagazine.com
What’s even more of a statement is the August cover of Allure magazine that features Kylie Jenner sporting a minimalist, ‘no makeup’ makeup look, which is rather surprising, since when do we ever see her without loads of makeup on? Celebrities are redefining our beauty standards. The point is that you should be fine with not looking absolutely made up and perfect all the time, because let’s face it, it may be enjoyable for some to apply makeup, but that doesn’t mean we have to. It’s nice to just let the face go free and natural.

Plagiarism in the Beauty World
Tumblr media
Photo via: hudabeauty.com
Is there such a thing as plagiarism in the makeup world? Recently there have been reports of shady Snapchat stealing popular You Tuber makeup tutorial looks to introduce new filters A great example of this is Mykie from the YouTube channel Glam&Gore who took to Instagram recently to make light of the fact that a new Snapchat filter was copied from her tutorial and Snapchat has admitted to doing this and many times over. I think that while the filter and her makeup look are similar there are some differences. It would be more professional for Snapchat to at the very least give credit to Mykie as the original source of their inspiration for the new filter. However, can someone really claim a makeup look to be “theirs”?
Tumblr media
Photo via: Instagram @mykie_
This week with the new release of the Kyshadow palette from Kylie Cosmetics. People are claiming that she stole the idea for her palate from Shannon Harris, also known by her YouTube name Shaanxo’s BH Cosmetic collaboration palette. While I do agree that the palettes are almost identical, don’t cosmetics companies copy shades and palettes all the time based on trends? Isn’t that the reason drugstore dupes exist? Although the thing is with dupes is that you are typically paying for the difference in quality. However, Kylie Jenner’s makeup line has come under criticism for quality, so the only difference you’re really paying for is for her name.  What do you think about plagiarism in the beauty world? Are people making too much out of nothing in order to cause controversy or is there really copyright infringement going on?

Don’t Pout It’s National Lipstick Day
Pucker up for National Lipstick Day! The first thing that comes to mind is red lipstick. It has been the staple color for thousands of years, since Sumerian times, when they would crush red rock and white lead together and lather it on their lips. It is probably one of the few colors that has withstand trends.
Tumblr media
Photo via: realsimple.com, Photo by Greg Delves
Red lipstick is commonly associated with femme fatale starlets like Ava Gardner, Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe and of course the adored Lucille Ball from “I Love Lucy.”  More lately the color is reminiscent of stars like Dita Von Tesse and singer Lana Del Rey.
Tumblr media
Photo via: elle.com
Unfortunately picking out the right bold red color is not as simple as just picking out the prettiest shade, but taking into account your skin tone, hair color, eye color and undertones. Many claim the best red lipstick is “Ruby Woo” from Mac Cosmetics. It is said to flatter all skin tones and won’t compete with warmer complexions or yellow undertones. Plus, the formula is long lasting with a blue undertone which will make teeth appear whiter.
Tumblr media
Photo via: thirteenthoughts.com
However, if you have red undertones, skip the red and go for a more natural color. The lipstick will just point out any redness. If you’re like me and you have impossibly thin lips then again skip the red, it just looks silly and makes them look even thinner cause let’s face it there is a fine line between looking good and looking like the joker.  My favorite lipstick that I will be doting and flaunting for National Lipstick Day is Maybelline’s ColorSensational Lipstick in the shade 015 or “Born with It.” So if you’re like me and love red lipstick, but feel you can’t pull it off it could be a matter of finding the right shade, unless you’re just not a fan then stick to pinky nudes or other colors you feel confident in.

Every Scar Has a Story
We all have some imperfections, some worse than others. Most of us have scars whether they’re from acne, a burn, an accident or medically caused. There is always a story behind every scar. Personally, I have three quite noticeable scars. One is from a major surgery, splenorenal shunt that I had when I was ten that left a large scar horizontally across my abdomen. You would think no bikini for her, but because of my confidence and what I had to endure during this ordeal I am not insecure about it. Plus my surgeon is pretty proud of himself too. However, this is not the case for everyone. Insecurities over scars differ from person to person based on how visible it is. There is hope for those that do want to cover them up though. Follow these simple steps to cover your scar.
Step 1
Use a waterproof product called Dermablend Cover Crème. It comes in a variety of skin tones, so pick out the one that matches the skin around the scar best.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/be09Kje8XaU
Video via: Dermablend.com
Step 2
A little bit of Dermablend goes a long way, so to cover scars take a small amount of Dermablend Cover Crème.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Dermablend.com
Step 3
Next melt the product with your fingers and blend it over the scar using a tapping motion for maximum coverage.
Step 4
Then let it dry and apply more if fuller coverage is necessary. Set with Dermablend’s loose translucent setting powder for all day wear so it won’t budge. It’s as simple as that!

The Cultural Conditioning of Makeup
There was a recent expose in New York Magazine by Kathleen Hou that asked the question of whether Instagram is making us all beauty clones. While I can’t deny that social media has changed the beauty industry, should we go so far to say that it is making us clones? I think with the rise of social media anyone can be a self-proclaimed beauty expert, whether they are formally trained or not, it’s given everyone a platform to voice their opinion. Honestly I don’t see anything wrong with that, other than the advent of crazy looking makeup trends.
Tumblr media
If you haven’t seen makeup artist and YouTuber Wayne Goss’s “Instagram Eyebrows Should be Illegal” video, as referenced in the article, it will give you insight into the issue. If you’re looking for more of Wayne Goss’s advice on this topic watch his video “Makeup Trends That Need to Die in 2016.” As he puts it, “It’s so unnatural and so horrifying.”
youtube
Video via: YouTube Wayne Goss
To me the most frightening trend in makeup is the fact that people have adapted drag in more ways than one. Not only are people “baking” their face, which is a traditional drag practice, but now we’re even using phrases like “yas queen.” Drag has a time and place, but it’s not meant for your average everyday woman.
Tumblr media
Photo via: YouTube Heidi Hamoud
Whether it is the Kim or Kylie effect, no matter where we click on Instagram you will see harsh brows, unblended contours, perfectly winged liner, false eyelashes, over lined lips and the carved out features that look like the work of Michelangelo. It makes me wonder if everyone has completely flawless, bronze- orange skin.
We all flock to the latest products that are supposedly the best and follow YouTube tutorials and trends religiously, but where do we draw the line?
Although it does seem that makeup artist are a bit of elitist snobs when it comes to Instagram makeup, they do have a point that it is not making your skin its most beautiful and besides most of those Instagram pictures you lust after are filtered and doesn’t reflect real life.

Tips to Avoid Photo Make Up Fails
Tumblr media
Whenever you’re taking pictures, whether it’s for a wedding, prom, senior pictures, family photos, and so on, you want to look your best and that all starts with the face you put forward.  Here are the makeup tips you need to follow to avoid any unsightly mishaps and look your best in any photo session.
Typically people wear a moisturizer or foundation with sunscreen, but on a day when you are taking pictures, particularly with the flash, you’ll want to skip this step because it will cause you to look ghostly white.
The toxic ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium oxide in sunscreen and makeup reflect the sun’s rays.  If it is necessary use only a maximum of 15 SPF. The number one rule here is that white reflects light.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Beautyeditor.ca
Ingredients that also create flashback is silica and silver mica found commonly in mineral powders which can show up and be unsightly in photos. Cue the red carpet photos of Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria, Nicole Kidman and Ashley Judd with the mysterious white powder that looks as if they just smashed a powdered doughnut in their face. If you can’t avoid sunscreen or makeup with the above ingredients try using a loose color pigmented powder to set your entire face for the best results. Always be sure to test it in a photo first though. Although if you have fair skin, you may need to skip the flash altogether.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Buzzfeed.com
A matte finish is best since a dewy glow can reflect and look shiny in the flash photography. Remember any makeup with shimmer or sparkle will give you an oily looking sheen.
Like the Hollywood starlets of the silver screen you always want to apply your makeup a little bolder than normal with a full face, since the camera can diminish the features you’re trying to emphasize.
Tumblr media
Barbara Stanwyck- Photo via: Biography.com
Most importantly, if you are oily remember to have oil blotting sheets on hand. You never know when pesky oil will pop up and you don’t want the camera to catch that.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Beautyeditor.ca
Once you are finished with your makeup, check out your work in other lighting similar to the lighting that will be in the picture and adjust from there. When in doubt test it out by snapping a selfie with the flash to avoid any mishaps.

Why You Need Bobbi Brown’s Limited-Edition Highlighting Powder
Tumblr media
Photo via: Fashionisers.com
Step aside shimmer brick, there is a new Bobbi Brown highlighting powder in town. The new limited- edition Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powders come in three shades, Afternoon glow, Sunset glow and last, but not least Telluride. Bobbi Brown is the industry’s leading cosmetic company that values accentuating your natural beauty. With highlighting being the new go-to, Telluride is a gorgeous medium tone warm shade with a mauve undertone.
What is great about this product is it doesn’t look glittery or chunky on the skin. Instead it gives it a natural reflective, luminous glow that looks like healthy skin. This is their last released shade from the collection and is probably the most pigmented and deepest in color. This highlight would work best for those with normal to dry skin. The downside is that it is not formulated for those with oily skin as it will make the oil more pronounced. It has a super smooth and buttery finish that works even for mature skin without emphasizing wrinkles.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Bobbi Brown Cosmetics
Just dust on the high cheeks or over blush if you are fair and you’re ready to glow. The coverage is buildable from medium to full coverage. It blends out effortlessly without mapping out all your pores like some highlighters.  It is a bit on the pricey side at $46 compared to some other brands, but the reflective pearl pigments won’t look cakey on your face. Plus with the large compact size it will be awhile before you hit pan. Purchase this online or at your local Nordstrom or Sephora store before it sells out…again.

What does Kat Von D Have Up Her Tattooed Sleeve?
The Low Down on Everything Kat Von D Beauty
Tumblr media
Photo via: Kat Von D Beauty
If the anticipation hasn’t gotten to you, tattooist and beauty arbiter Kat Von D has been dropping hints left and right when it comes to her makeup line. With the confirmation on a Too Faced Collab, color additions for her matte Everlasting liquid lipstick and the newly released limited edition grungy Serpentina palette that just hit Sephora shelves this week, Kat Von D isn’t slowing down.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Instagram @katvondbeauty
The exclusive, Serpentina palette is Cleopatra-inspired and comes in eight new rich shades with a loose pigment, named after Egyptian antiquities, such as“Hieroglyph” and “Ankh.” It is no surprise that Kat would jump on the ever-popular rainbow makeup train, with a palette that is much more temperamental than other brand offerings. You can pick up this palette online at Sephora for $45.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Instagram @thekatvond
In other Kat Von D news... She is collaborating with Too Faced! You don’t typically think about the two brands meshing, with Kat Von D’s line paying a tribute to everything gothic rock n’ roll and Too Faced capitalizing on the sweet side of makeup, with products like chocolate soufflé bronzer and heart shaped packaging. However, I’m convinced it will be every bit good girl meets the dark side.
Tumblr media
Photo via: Instagram @thekatvond
As if that was enough KVDB news, she recently proclaimed that she is reformulating her products to be 100% vegan, reflecting her own lifestyle. So that means all animal byproduct ingredients from diary, honey, beeswax and Carmine (a dye derived from insects) are getting the boot. It’s not only about being cruelty free, but making products that makeup and animal lovers alike can enjoy. Besides, who really needs a hot pink eyeshadow? There is no word on when the reformulated products will be available, but animal lovers can rejoice.
A video posted by Kat Von D (@thekatvond) on Jun 23, 2016 at 5:50pm PDT
Photo via: Instagram @thekatvond
If you’re not one of Kat’s 4.5 million Instagram followers, you probably missed out on the preview of the new Alchemist palette set to come out next year. According to Kat, this has been seven years in the works. She didn’t share much information on the contents of the palette, suggesting in the caption that “Don’t even try and guess what this special ‘palette’ is, cuz I promise you won’t!” But what we can tell from the video is that the white opulent, iridescent triangle palette is out of this world with the embossed gothic “A”.  So just what is in this palette? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Some fans have proposed that its highlighter.
Honestly, I can’t wait for all of these exciting, must-have-now products, so stay tuned. If the Mi Vida Loca palette was any indication of the high demand of her limited edition products then keep refreshing that Sephora page to get a chance at buying the Serpetina Palatte, available now!

Metallic Lips
Tumblr media

From the infamous Kylie lip kits to drugstore brands like Milani, metallic lips are taking over. Reminiscent of frosted lipstick, these reflective, lustrous lips are perfect for the summer time with their bronze and pink tones. Most of these metallic formulations are liquid lipsticks with long lasting wear that give high-impact shine.
Graphic Liner
Tumblr media
Photo via: Style.com                                                    Get the Look
Step away from the cat eye and draw outside the lines. Get an illustrative graphic liner look that will give your eyes a sense of drama. While floating liner, dashed lines, negative space and creased lids seem outlandish, it will shake up your makeup routine.
Lip Oils
Tumblr media
Photo via: Cult of Pretty                                               Get the Look
Lip oils are nothing new, but that fact that favorite brands have been adding lip oils to their line-up is no coincidence. These lip oils not only moisturize lips, they also give a shiny, healthy gloss without the stickiness. Their nourishing oils come in rich pigments giving you a supple pout. The natural oils have anti-aging properties leaving lips succulent and silky-smooth.
Old School Liner
Tumblr media

No I’m not talking retro liner. Think about your high school pictures with your fully rimmed black liner and a clean fresh face. Just run your liner along your water line. You can either keep it crisp and clean by tight lining or go all out and smudge it for a more daring look. All you need is your favorite liner and you’re good to go, no other makeup required.
Gothic Lips

If the runway was any indication, black and deep burgundy lips are here to stay! You can take this look from understated to horror story depending on the rest of your face makeup. You definitely need to have confidence to rock this vampy look. How do you pull this off? Easy! Just keep the rest of your look minimal and make sure to find the right witchy cool tone shade for your complexion.

Is makeup an art form?
Cosmetics is a  $56.8 billion dollar industry in the U.S. alone. Can you believe that? The industry continues to rake in more year after year, but could makeup really be considered an art form? I took an editorial makeup class at Academy of Art University, that explored different styles of makeup, from "no-makeup" makeup to glamour makeup and Avant-garde makeup. This class made me rethink that makeup is more than just covering imperfections to reflect your best self, but rather as a form of self-expression.
The simple answer to this question is yes, makeup is an art form, because it combines creativity and skill. Your makeup style progresses over time and you can hone your skills by trying new techniques and styles. Think of makeup in terms of painting-- the face is the medium, concealer and foundation is the primer or first layer, and what is applied on top of that is a new work of art.
Sure everyone could apply basic eyeliner, but not everyone could do it at the same skill level. Just like with drawing, everyone has the ability to draw, but that doesn’t necessarily make them an artist. Makeup, like art, can reflect changes with trends, mood, season, well-being, and occasions. It can change the way you feel and the way you perceive yourself. Regardless, whether you are applying makeup to boost your self-confidence or to make a statement it is art form no less.
