Fresh Flowers For a Cure
By: Megan Myers
Small acts of kindness are proven to go a long way with the consistent uplifting reactions from flower donations provided by Bloom Again. By repurposing fresh flowers and donating them to various organizations around Oxford, Bloom Again is warming the hearts of many, including the participants of Memory Makers in their celebration for World Alzheimer’s Day.
In 2010, Diane Arnold began Oxford’s very own Memory Makers, a volunteer community resource seeking to serve those in the Oxford community affected by memory loss due to dementia, particularly participants with early to middle stage Alzheimer’s disease. Through respite care and socialization amongst a wide variety of meaningful activities, caregivers are assisted in taking care of their loved ones and participants receive the opportunity to be a part of a welcoming community where they can feel accomplished.  Their current 24 participants come from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday along with volunteers of all ages enjoying every minute of each other’s company.
“We call it the best friend approach where we all sit around the table and everybody’s a friend and you don’t really know who has alzheimer’s or doesn’t”, says Diane Arnold, founder and owner of Memory Makers. “They have alzheimer’s but they also have lots of skills and they care for eachother, you notice how they will ask another if they need more flowers and if they do they say they will give them some of theirs.”
September 21 marks World Alzheimer’s Day where organizations worldwide concentrate their efforts on raising awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Memory Makers celebrates the occasion by wearing purple and participating in a flower arrangement activity provided by a sorority donation from Bloom Again. Reactions are heartwarming on both ends as participants joyfully help one another arrange vibrant bouquets to bring home for themselves or their loved ones. Participant Elsie, speaks of her reaction to donations brought in by Bloom Again and how they benefit her experience at Memory Makers along with the joy they bring to her home.
“They are always so beautiful that when I’m done I usually take them and bring them to my sister who does not attend Memory Makers and she loves so much this kind of thing,” says Elsie.
With organizations like Bloom Again, these participants affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia, are given the chance to feel worthwhile knowing that they are accomplishing a task that benefits more than just themselves. Sam, participant at Memory Makers for 4 years now and World War 2 veteran, takes great joy in Bloom Again donations.
“I’m bringing these to my daughter. Well, she loves flowers. One of my daughters in Memphis is a master gardener, but not one of my daughters doesn’t love flowers,” says Sam.
What may seem as just a simple activity proves to benefit many through the kindness of local volunteers and Bloom Again donators as seen by the delighted Memory Makers members as they carry out their bouquets to their loved ones. With the help of some fresh flowers, they are able to celebrate the fact that Alzheimer’s and dementia may be a struggle to their daily life, but will not stop them from living.
