What Is A Place Like Me Doing In A Girl Like This

Welcome to my Geek-Out Corner. Here's where I geek-out about all the things that interest me. I like stories and I like sharing my opinions about stories. Sometimes they're positive, sometimes they're not so positive. I am a rampant multishipper and I make no apologies. Also, I love having healthy discussions. If you like discussing stories and just in general geeking out about fandom stuff, this is the place for you. Just updated my Duolingo app and I gotta say, I find this new icon very disturbing. I get what they're doing with the third eye design and all, but this owl for sure will be starring in my nightmares.

Currently watching Riverdale right now. I saw a video essay on the show earlier this week and I thought, what the heck, why not, I'm in the mood for trash let's get back into this. I had previously watched season 1 when it first came out but didn't really continue after that because I heard how completely bat shit insane and off the rails it gets. I'm not expecting anything amazing from this show now because I know that it eventually devolved within a few seasons and turned into such an unwatchable slog fest that it's now become a master class example of how to not write shows.
But I do remember thinking when I saw season 1 the first time, yeah, this show's weird but not unwatchable. It has some pretty terrible acting, some questionable storylines, characterization is nonsensical to say the least and I know it only goes downhill from here. But season 1 has a charm to it, at least in the sense that the show knew enough about what it was to not take itself too seriously, something that I know changes after season 1. But hey, at least I know what to expect going into this trainwreck of a show. I'll enjoy season 1 for what it is and for seasons 2-7, I'll do what the show couldn't and refuse to take them seriously.
And I completely forgot about this, but omg, season 1 Bughead are so freaking cute, I love them, I love their dynamic, I know the relationship goes downhill in later seasons but I'll enjoy the fun of the ship in season 1 at least.

Something I really love about Red One is Chris Evan's face...just kidding, I mean it's a very pretty face don't get me wrong, I would watch just about any movie of his just so I could look at his face, lol. But in seriousness, I love Chris Evan's facial reactions to all the craziness going on around him in this movie. So often in movies like this where you have this fantastical world and you bring in someone from the "normie" world as it were, they tend to go through it very well-adjusted like they're used to seeing crazy shit every day (even though they haven't). Not with Jack O'Malley though. From start to finish, he is just like, " Holy crap, what world have I stepped into, this is insane, how do I exist and keep my self safe in this world" but also, he's very much like, "this world may be scary and insane but kind of awesome too". I just love how his character embodies the fish out of water trope but actually portrays it very realistically with an equal amount, fear, shock, awe and excitement.

This weekend, I watched Red One and you know what, I'm kind of obsessed with it. Apparently, it isn't well-received by critics but you know, in this case, I say screw the critics. They watch far too many movies sometimes and I think that at worst, it leaves them very jaded and unable to enjoy things, or at best they have a subconscious bias that they apply to all films based on films they like or specialize in. This movie is a fun little action-adventure jaunt into the Santa Claus mythos that, despite its flaws, I don't mind taking up residence in my brain. It's basically everything I want when I settle in for an action-adventure story ride. Fun, light-hearted, ridiculous and knows that it's ridiculous with just a little bit of drama to tie it together to make you care about the characters. I could see how it might be a little confusing to critics because it's a ridiculous movie played straight but I also think that's kind of the point. Action-adventure films are always a little bit ridiculous and so often play themselves too seriously sometimes to the film's detriment. So I think the decision to play this film straight in its ridiculousness was a very intentional decision and in its own way is a form of satire poking its own fun at the genre. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it even broke even in the box office, so we probably won't get a sequel sadly. Which is too bad because I feel like it has a really good premise for making sequels that pertain to a lot of different holidays and I think that could be fun to explore. And also, I need to know if Chris Evan's character's absent father is in any way connected to the mythological world. It's possible he just has a dead beat dad but I am a total sucker for dad drama and I would eat that shit right up if we found out his dad is some type of mythological creature.

I see this trope a lot in romance and it always weirds me out. Like someone buys out a whole restaurant just to have a date with me, my first inclination is not going to be, "oh that's so romantic, he's my true soulmate". It's going to be instead, "wow this guy ruined other people's plans and dates just for this, he has no regard for other people, he's kind of a selfish douche, probably not my soulmate".
Maybe this is just the extrovert in me talking, but this trope of rich dudes buying out whole places so that they can have the restaurant or zoo, in this case, to themselves is just kind of weird. I like being surrounded by other people. Yeah, sure, this is definitely my extroversion talking. When I'm in groups of people I can feel their energy flowing into me, and it's always positive, so the idea of going to a public place and having it be completely empty just doesn't sound like fun at all.

Watching Twin Peaks for the first time and it's definitely an experience to be sure. It's like living in a fever dream after just having gotten high off of something, everything makes sense and doesn't make sense all at the same time. It makes you want to cry and laugh and you have no idea which one you're going to do at any given moment. It's fun and wacky and emotionally jarring and insane. You go from scene to scene never knowing what's going to pop up next or what emotion is going to be elicited next. You really go through this show running the gambit of emotions and I'm not entirely certain I'll be 100% sane once I'm finished.

I think, maybe, the best things, the richest things aren't supposed to come easily, and that sometimes the moments that make the most sense happen when everything else doesn't and, well, I think you deserve more than popcorn tonight.

"i love you" is old, it's tired.
"i love my motorcycle. it's the purest form of freedom i have ever experienced. it's easily the best purchase of my life and i've never regretted it, not for one second because i love my motorcycle; but ever since i met you, i've been thinking about buying a car" is fun, it's fresh.

@pscentral event 30: friendship | PSYCH (2006-2014)
Burton Guster has been my best friend since we were five, and maybe, just maybe, if any of you can look yourselves in the mirror and know that you've been half as good a friend to someone else as Gus has been to me, well you too can be considered great.

I know, long time no post from me. But I'm here for my bi-annual gushing of something that probably none of my current followers care about.
So I get about 12 days off during Dec from work for the winter holidays and it's always a struggle trying to figure out what I'm going to do for 12 days in a row. This year, since it's been about 5 years or so since I've done one, I decided to have a Psych TV show marathon. So I dug through my boxes of DVDs that I had long since put away since streaming became a thing and found my Psych DVDs and commenced with my marathon. Having a Psych marathon using their DVD collection is the ONLY way if you ask me. Yes, I can stream Psych but then you don't get the added benefit of listening to the commentaries on the DVDs which are fantastic, seriously, the commentaries for Psych are some of the best commentaries I've ever listened to (Leverage is also up there).
So I spent my 12 days watching every season, every commentary, every deleted scene, all 3 movies and I think no matter how old I get, the magic of Psych will never disappear for me. They can keep on making the movies and I will support them all the way. It turns out, Psych was exactly what I needed to get me out of this year long depression funk I've been in. I feel so rejuvenated and alive.
The best takeaway I always get from Psych is that it's hard to "adult" sometimes, and when life starts turning into that, it's ok to be a kid again, open yourself up to that childhood innocence again. That's what Shawn Spencer teaches us throughout the series, you may physically grow into an adult but you can still keep the child in you alive. And we see that with all the other characters too. When we first meet everyone in the pilot, everyone but Shawn is just very serious and very adult and then as the show goes on, their eccentricities start coming out more as if Shawn is bringing that out in them. If this were one of those feel good animes, the show would most certainly have ended with all the characters talking about how Shawn Spencer changed their lives for the better, by being very child like in his exuberance to solve crime, he's made everyone around him happier and living the best version of their lives. Not exactly what happened at the end of the series, but the implication definitely is there. And I love that the show ends with Shawn going off to San Francisco to be with Juliet thinking he has to be a grown up now because Shawn has no self esteem and feels like he's holding everyone back and Gus comes in and tells him, "no way, no how", what they've been doing for the past 8 years is exactly what needed to happen and he wouldn't change it for anything. So the show in the beginning has such a great dichotomy of the grown man who never grew up teaching everyone around him to embrace their inner child to at the end, telling himself he needs to grow up, that hes holding everyone back with his childlike nonsense but his best friend in the world telling him that he doesn't have to give that up and let's just keep doing it because this is who we were meant to be.
The show is so great. It's wacky and funny, and occasionally smart, and there are some fantastic bits of really emotional moments that get me every time (I'm talking to you Daredevil episode). I will watch this show every few years, go through the show about 3 times in its entirety during every rewatch because I just can't get enough of it. It reminds me it's never too late to follow through on your childhood dreams just because you became an adult.
The line from the theme song will always reverberate through my psyche: I'm not inclined to resign to maturity.

I think probably what I like the most about this is that it's not Stiles being"forceful" and "aggressive" that earns him his dance with Lyda, in fact she continues to reject him after such a tactic. But it's when Stiles points out something she's tried so hard to hide, believing no one would actually be interested in her if they genuinely knew and here Stiles is who has made no secret of his admiration for her, but she realizes he admires her not just because she's pretty but because shes smart, something she believes she could never be valued for. She realizes she can be who she actually is and this dance isn't necessarily about her reciprocating feelings for Stiles but thanking him for giving her hope she can be more than just a trophy and still be loved.
