deeply refreshing to see someone critical of Swift who also like, genuinely likes her. Like i'm neutral to positive on her, but the online discourse has been absolutely rancid. flipping between "Taylor Swift has never done anything wrong ever and she's a fucking genius" and "Taylor Swift is the worst lyricist of all time and also a bad person" is exhausting, so thank you for like. nuance or something lmao
not to make it serious for a sec but i genuinely think that being able to like things that are bad is really important. like I think that it's an important skill to be able to look at something and see what you personally enjoy about it and then take a step back and acknowledge that objectively it's flawed. and to also be able to acknowledge that liking something isn't necessarily an identity or a moral stance. and i think that fandom space in general could really benefit from more people taking the time to learn how to do that. it's okay to like things that are bad
#people ask me sometimes why ill occasionally talk about something i like and then go 'but it's bad' and the answer is usually because it is#i love teen wolf. i love genshin impact. i love detective conan. and i fucking LOVE taylor swift. that doesnt mean theyre good#it just means i like them. and recognizing their flaws actually helps me better identify what i like about them!#it's like. in my mind bad > good is the x axis and i like it > i dont like it is the y axis yk. they're not mutually exclusive#tldr it's not that serious. we can all relax a little#irt taylor swift i do also think she has done some real harm to her fans in enabling them to deflect all criticism of her as misogyny#and i don't think it's fully the fault of these people who are parroting that response bc so much of her marketing has deliberately#reinforced this idea that to be a swiftie is to be a part of a sisterhood and that any attack on taylor is an attack on all of those women#who are in that in-group. when that's obviously not the case. but she's marketed herself as. for lack of a better term. 'girl music'#to the point where it makes her fans feel as though any criticism of the music or the woman responsible for it is an attack on their#personal experience of womanhood/girlhood/sisterhood/etc. and that's how you get all of thess bad-faith accusations of misogyny#i don't necessarily think this was her deliberate goal with her marketing tho because like. on first glance such a strong sense of communit#among fans sounds like a great thing. the friendship bracelets i got at the eras tour movie are really genuinely special to me.#but it does present a problem when your fans are unable to separate how they feel about the community and experience your music has fostere#from how they feel about you as a person. especially when you are a billionaire who absolutely CANNOT be above criticism in this economy#anyway. tldr i love taylor's music and i don't think swiftie hivemind is as deliberately malicious as it may seem#but it's obviously necessary to be able to take a step back and look objectively at what you're participating in.#anyway stream ttpd or don't idc <3#taylor swift

its so funny to me when such bad lyrics get thru cause like... if I were a billionaire I would hire people to make sure my songs were lyrically perfect. i would simply not fumble the bag that hard
unfortunately i think shes gotten to the point where no one wants to say no to her. shes so rich and famous that no one is willing to look her in the eyes and say taylor you cannot put that in a song

ttpd has plenty of bad lines but personally i don't think shes getting enough hate for "like you were a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy"

So, to a returning fan who hasn't watched a lick of Voltron after season 2 and wants to do a rewatch, what do you say is the best point to stop before things go downhill?
oh you’re not gonna like either of my answers to this question. personally i think it was bad from the beginning but it starts noticeably deteriorating after season 2 so. basically if you insist on rewatching it don’t watch any more than you already have

whats your favorite song on ttpd?
right now it's ttpd (the title track lol) but i havent actually listened to the whole album all the way through since release night and my tastes tend to change as i re-listen so that's subject to change! ttpd just has that sort of 1989/reputation-ish sound which is my favorite kind of music from her lol. my other favs so far are the albatross, clara bow, and the bolter :)

ok so i had a hunch about this but i did actually change my switch over to japanese to check lol. this is the quest log i think you're referencing, which is the completion message after you get all 13 memories:
Tumblr media
13か所の想い出の地を巡りゼルダ姫の想いを受け取った 想い出の中のゼルダ姫はいつもー懸命だつた… 一刻も早くゼルダ姫を救い出して彼女の笑顔をもうー度にの目で見たい
essentially, this translates to "Visited the 13 memory locations and recieved princess zelda's feelings. in the memories, princess zelda was always working hard... [I] want to rescue princess zelda as soon as possible and see her smile again."
whereas in the english translation the entry is:
You've visited all 13 of the locations shown in the old pictures and recovered the associated memories of your days with Princess Zelda. In your memories, Princess Zelda always seemed burdened by her task... Go and save her as quickly as you can to finally ease that burden.
this is a relatively faithful translation, barring certain word changes to make the dialog sound less clunky in english. (translating japanese to english is SUPER difficult because of the grammatical differences btw. it's a miracle there aren't WAY MORE weird translation differences.) the most egregious change is that "see her smiling face again" becomes "ease her burden" but I think the reason that change was made was probably to maintain a consistent level of formality across versions. it might not seem like it in translation, but link speaks pretty formally when referencing zelda, and "want[ing] to see her smile" kind of has a different connotation in english than it does in japanese. wanting to "ease that burden" conveys the same general vibe in english while maintaining that level of formality.
as for the assertion that in japanese it's written like a journal from link's perspective... that's not necessarily true, at least not for this entry. One thing that's hard for native english speakers to grasp about japanese is that it's a pronoun-dropping language, meaning words like i, me, my, her, she, you, etc etc are very rarely used and usually inferred from context. When I translated this log above, I translated the final sentence as "[I] want to rescue princess zelda as soon as possible and see her smile again," but the log never actually uses the word for "I." because of the way japanese works, the pronoun is dropped completely, and it COULD be link talking, but as i understand it it could also be read the way that the english log is written, as a third-person narrator going over what link has done. Because of the way the final sentence is written I probably would on first glance read it as link speaking (and most translation apps presume an "I" pronoun when given no other context, so google translate will translate it as "i"), but if you insert あなたは (you) instead of 僕/私は (I) for the implied pronoun the sentence reads almost exactly like the english version, and there's not anything contextually to suggest that that would be inappropriate for this sentence.
I'm not sure whether a native japanese speaker would interpret the log as link speaking or not, and this single log took me so long to translate that I have no energy left to go check any of the other logs i screenshotted to see if link ever uses a personal pronoun in them, but i'm guessing he probably doesn't, and that's why the english log was written that way. (if anyone can find one please let me know. i'm desperate to know what personal pronoun he uses.) it's ambiguous as to who is speaking in the log due to the way japanese works, and the easiest way to carry that same ambiguity over into english is to insert an omniscient 3rd-person narrator. So imo it's not necessarily a deliberate omission of link's character so much as it is an attempt by the translators to preserve the original impact of the text! as previously mentioned, translating from japanese to english is INSANELY hard because of the grammatical and cultural differences in the two languages. it looks to me like the poor localization team was just doing their best to keep things as faithful as possible!
Could you maybe explain why the Japanese versions of BOTW and TOTK seem so much less subtle about the nature of Link and Zelda's relationship?
Even when regular folk translate it it seems less subtle, it's almost like Nintendo's localization was deliberately to be as vague as possible
to be completely honest I haven't found many instances of localization altering the nature of their relationship, but I also haven't ever sat down and actually looked at the japanese game as a whole because my japanese reading comprehension is. probably on the level of a preschooler. I can think of a few instances where I know the localization altered specific lines, but only in pieces of the game I've specifically looked at in japanese for other reasons. if you could give me specific examples of places where there are changes to look into I could definitely do it, but im not strong enough to play the whole game with a kanji dictionary on hand just to understand what the hell is being said to me lmfao

Ok in the most basic terms, the title is in english. it's called "tears of the kingdom" in both its japanese and english releases.
Tumblr media
this is the japanese title for the game. written in the english alphabet, it says "Zeruda no densetsu: tiazu obu za kingudamu." the english title "tears of the kingdom" doesn't come from a translated japanese phrase, it comes from the english words being spelled out in japanese katakana. (this was also the case for botw, sksw, and tp. the last zelda to have a japanese title was spirit tracks, which was 大地の汽笛.) unlike the english alphabet, japanese katakana are a phonetic writing system, meaning specific characters have specific sounds associated with them and only ever make those sounds. the character that's making the vowel sound in the word "tears" (ティアーズ) is イ, which can only ever be read with the long E sound. ティアーズ can only ever be read as "tears" meaning crying tears. if it was meant to be pronounced with a short E, as in tearing something up, it would have been spelled テアーズ (teazu), without the イ.
visual guide for extra reference:

i miss the like 3-month period between totk title drop and release where i was fighting in the trenches every day trying to figure out a way to explain to people who don't speak japanese that there was no double meaning in the fucking title. simpler times
