Him leaving is really abrupt. His storyline has been separate from the majority of other actors on the show. Surely his contract wouldn’t end mid-season. No other acting projects announced.

AND it seems like Grey’s has been really good at keeping behind-the-scenes drama under wraps since Katherine Heigl and the f-word incidents early on. Ellen has stated that the public doesn’t know how toxic the set was behind the scenes for the first ten years.
