With the F1 Movie release lingering closer and closer, it’s time to have an uncomfortable conversation.
Forgive me for going all feminist on you (I’m not sorry), but have a seat and let’s chat, yeah?
Let’s discuss the negative impact this movie is going to have on women in motorsport as well as female fans, shall we?
Of course the obvious conversation is about the women working in motorsport. Imagine how poorly the plot is going to reflect on them. Why? Oh, well let’s see. You’ve got an entire plot that revolves around the main character (who’s played by a misogynistic wife beater, by the way, great casting choice!) sleeping with his fucking female engineer.
Now bear in mind how that’s going to negatively affect the PR of women working in motorsport. Especially Laura Mueller, who is the sport’s first ever female race engineer in its entire 75 year history. Who literally already has incels on the internet saying the only way she got her job is because she slept with someone.
And of course, consider the female fans.
There are so many of us out here every day fighting with male fans who think we “don’t know anything” and “only watch F1 because the drivers are hot.” We are constantly ostracized in this fucking sport and feeling like we have to prove that we’re even allowed to like it.
Can you imagine how poorly the F1 Movie will reflect on us?
All this movie is going to do is push the harmful, negative stereotype that F1 is a “man’s world.” It’s just going to make women feel like they don’t belong in a sport where they already feel shoved aside.
So, and maybe I’m being a little dramatic here, but if you happen to know a female F1 fan, please be kind to her. Please check on her.
And to all my ladies, we do belong in this sport. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 💜💜

While I understand that some people in the F1 community are very excited about the release of the F1 movie — and I don’t want to take that excitement away from them — I personally will never watch this film. I simply cannot support the way the sport, and especially the role of women in motorsport, are being portrayed. I’m glad that many of my female friends are standing with me in boycotting this movie.
I had hoped we had come further from the days when filmmakers believed that the only way to make a story "interesting" was through forced sexual tension between middle-aged men and women twenty or more years younger than them — but sadly, I was wrong.
I urge everyone to be mindful of the impact this kind of portrayal has on all women involved in motorsport — whether they are engineers, mechanics, drivers, or fans. We all deserve our place in this sport.
To all women who live and love Formula 1 - I see you, and you deserve better.

all i really remember about fp1&2 from yesterday:
• charles hitting a wall.
• lance hitting a wall.
• a lot of lockups and sliding.
• everyone was mad about traffic.
• alex missed his pit box.
• williams were second and third in fp1.
• mercedes were first and third in fp2.
i told my roommate to wake me up for fp3 and was not so i missed it, but i did see oscar clip the wall of champions, one of the saubers have a big spin, and yuki get a ten-place grid penalty for overtaking during a red flag.
my roommate didn’t wake me up for quali either, but i don’t think i missed too much:
• the engine cover on alex’s car came off.
• isack got a three-place grid penalty.
• lando and oscar switched from practice to quali, meaning lando didn’t do as well while oscar did pretty well.
• george on pole!!!
• oscar p3!!!
• kimi p4 and fernando p6!!!
• franco p11?!
• bad times for the other half of alpine, williams, red bull, racing bulls, and aston martin.

i don’t wanna hear it about the “who’s meaner: andrew or aaron” discussion anymore. it’s aaron 1000%. andrew doesn’t care to hurt your feelings, aaron however, does care to. he knows exactly how to hurt your feelings and is unafraid to go there.

i completely forgot to post this and it’s been three days since the race, but here are my spain gp thoughts:
• alex getting a ten-second penalty right after being told to retire from the race?? and they’re still making him drive another lap??
• (zoom in on one of the mclaren mechanics head patting another mechanic made me laugh.)
• max’s radio just being “fucking idiots” when he and lando are trying to pass liam and ollie, who are fighting each other for a place.
• kimi goes into the gravel ten laps from the end, triggering a full safety car, and he also retires from the race :(
• i’m not an expert or anything, but why are we doing so many laps with the safety car?? lewis: “they sure do love wasting laps.”
• (silly safety car cam.)
• the way max goes from joking over the radio to raging, especially near the end.
• oscar win!!! mclaren 1-2!!!
• another charles podium!!!
• more nico points!!!
• FERNANDO POINTS!!!
• max gets a ten-second penalty and gets dropped to p10.
• oscar, lando, and charles just yapping away in the cooldown room. i love them.
• interesting that they still have jack in the championship standings graphic even though franco’s in the seat right now?
• i hope lance isn’t back in two weeks because that’s not enough time to recover and then immediately go back into it. i want him to take a break and properly recover first.

I'm for real done with the mentality hot talking point surrounding F1, but was thinking today about Lando and Oscar (Typical!) and how social media as well as journalists approaches to discussing their mentalities are both harmful for different reasons... Sharing what I think and may get a bit carried away, but anyway here are a variety of my thoughts surrounding these topics that no one asked for:
For both drivers, I think the current conversation pushes two incredibly harmful narratives surrounding mental health in general but particularly men's mental health. I think the narratives frequently heard are
1. If you talk about your emotions, that automatically means that you are controlled by your emotions or are therefore weak (Commonly assumed of Lando) and
2. If you are less open with your emotions that means you don't have any, never feel sad, frustrated, etc (Commonly assumed of Oscar)
The first is dangerous because it can continue the stigma that it's "weak" to have feelings or talk about these to others- which is especially detrimental to people who process things externally and then are able to move on easier (Lando has said before that it's helpful for him and works to be open about something he messed up on and then he can move forward).
The second is dangerous because it can make internal processors feel like, although they would rather work through feelings on their own or with a close friend, the expectation of them is now that they can never share how they are feeling on a larger scale or that if they do have emotions there is something wrong with that (Oscar has mentioned many times that just because he doesn't get angry on the radio, etc, that doesn't mean he never feels frustrated).
Overall, the thing that annoys me the most is when journalist, broadcasters, and presenters jump on these "twitter talking points" instead of doing the journalistic work that should be required of them for their job. If I'm watching a race I'm expecting you to talk about the race, or at the very least the sport, not who needs a mental coach and who doesn't.
In general, not just in formula 1, I have been more and more disappointed to see journalism being led, not by research or their own investigation, but instead regurgitating easy and inflammatory social media talking points. I find it lazy and also harmful to the field and people's likelihood to take journalists seriously.. And it also encourages randos on social media to continue to circulate these talking points as well when they have no understanding of the situation either.
All in all- I do think you have to have a "championship mentality" to win the WDC, however I would summarize this as: A desire to win, confidence that you have the ability to do what you need to, willingness to see the areas you need grow and accept feedback, and are hardworking.
I think that Lando and Oscar both have this mentality, and Lando being more of an external processor vs Oscar being more of an internal processor has no impact on this whatsoever!
Let me know your thoughts! And if you made it this far here's a treat!
