Hello! I was recently re-reading the Hisoka vs Chrollo fight and i’m left with so many questions e.g why did Chrollo explain all of his new nen abilities to Hisoka at the start of the match, why does Hisoka suddenly change his approach towards the troupe after the fight, etc? Also, how do you think the fight ties into the larger themes of the story. It does take place in heaven’s arena and the audience gets heavily mixed up in it so those might be clues. Sorry if this is too long 😅 thank you
Hello anon!
Sorry for the wait!
Chrollo and Hisoka’s fight tells us multiple things about both characters. I will make some references to these two metas.
What is interesting is that both Chrollo and Hisoka are two characters who objectify both others  and themselves, but their fight shows they do not take it much well when someone else objectifies them.
When it comes to both Hisoka and Chrollo objectifying others, I think this is very well shown through the powers and the tricks used by both characters during their battle.
On one hand Chrollo uses a total of five different powers throughout the battle (excluding the book and the bookmark which are his own abilities). He used Black Voice, The Sun and Moon, Order Stamp, Gallery Fake and Convert Hands.
These powers highlight different aspects of Chrollo’s character.
Convert Hands lets him take someone else’s appearance and change others’ appearances as well. All in all, it is a power Chrollo uses to camouflage himself while in a crowd. The alternatice name of the ability is Transfer Student and it is interesting because it suggests the idea of someone new which wants to fit in. All in all, it is easy to see how such an ability would have been useful to its previous owner for infiltration and for spying others. It could be effective also in hiding and in losing pursuers. In Chrollo’s case, it might be seen as a hint to his frail sense of identity, which I have talked about in the meta about him and Kurapika:
Chrollo says confusely that the reason he is killing is to find himself. This makes sense considering his past: he was born without an identity and his relationship with the outside was one where there was a risk of things getting stolen from him. So in an attempt to interact with the outside he reversed this relationship and made himself being the one stealing from others.
And I have touched the topic in these other two metas as well. In short, Chrollo’s sense of self is frail at best and this is why he tries to compensate by stealing from others:

Only to get immediately bored by what he stole and to give it away:

Only to start stealing again and more.

Do you think there are religious parallels in Yorknew and CA? I read some time ago about similarities between the spiders and the twelve disciples, Pakunoda's choice regarding Chrollo's "teachings" and Kurapika's "chain evil down to hell" phrase relating to Revelations 20:2 and the YN ending. And also the Buddhist undertones in CA growing as the story progresses as well and Meruem as a Siddartha Gautama-lite figure.
Hello anon,
yes, I think that HxH has religious motifs going on.
When it comes to Buddhism, I know too little about it to comment on the motifs referencing this religion. That said, I am pretty sure that they are present in the CAA. For example, Netero’s nen ability draws inspiration from Guanyin, according to the wiki. On the wiki you can find some curiosities and interesting takes on it.
When it comes to the Spiders’ motif, I have mentioned it here, in relation to both Chrollo and Morena:
She and Chrollo are both outcasts and both are leading a group. However, their powers are somehow opposite. As a matter of fact Chrollo steals others’ powers and has stolen even the ones of his comrades in order to fight Hisoka. Morena’s power on the other hand lets her comrades gain new abilities the more they kill.
What is more, both her and Chrollo have religious imagery associated with them since Chrollo is associated to both Jesus and the devil and Morena is wearing a crown made of thorns exactly like the one Jesus wore. Moreover they both encourage their respective groups to create chaos.
As I say above, Chrollo is associated to both Jesus and the devil.
He leads a group of twelve like Jesus and his followers are expected to follow the leader’s “creed”:
Tumblr media
Jesus knew he had to die in order to save humanity. Because of this, he prepared his disciples to take over after him and did not consider his life more precious than theirs. Similarly, Chrollo is ready to die for the Spider and gives more importance to his philosophy and orders, rather than to himself as an individual.
He is associated with the devil through his name (Lucilpher) and the reversed cross. It is true that this symbol can also be read as St Peter’s cross, but in pop culture it is nowadays associated with anti-christian ideas. What is more, Chrollo, like the devil, collects people’s souls:
His power and the group he founded then are nothing, but two ways he channels this one tendency of his. He does not connect with others outside the ones he accepted into his little circle, but he manifests interest in them from an intellectual point of view and studies them by stealing parts of their identities and closing them into his book. He enjoys reading others and reduces them to pages he can look up whenever he wants.
A nen ability is a part of the individuality of a person, so Chrollo stealing them can be seen as a metaphor of him stealing a part of people’s souls.
In short, Chrollo is somehow an inversion of Jesus. In particular, Jesus’ philosophy was a pacifistic and altruistic one, while Chrollo’s is violent and selfish. This juxtaposition is symbolically explored also through the Spider itself, especially when it comes to the theme of “betrayal”.
As a matter of fact Chrollo himself makes the connection:
Tumblr media
The idea of a member betraying the group is mentioned since the beginning of the arc. Chrollo, though, dismisses it because he thinks none of the members would gain anything by selling the Spiders to the mafia.
He is right, since in that occurrence the mafia had foreseen the Spiders’ attack thanks to Neon. However, the rest of the arc proves that things are far more complex than what Chrollo likes to think.
As a matter of fact there are at least two “traitors” in the Spider, but they are very different:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Pakunoda and Hisoka end up betraying the Spider, but they do so for opposite reasons. Hisoka does so because he does not care about the group, since he is an “imposter”. Pakunoda does instead care and she chooses to sacrifice herself for both the group and the individuals:
I have briefly discussed Paku’s choice here and here. All in all, Pakunoda is a traitor because she betrays the Spiders’ laws. However, she does so to save a loved one and she does a very selfless act. She saves Chrollo even if deep down know Chrollo would order her to kill Kurapika instead. At the same time, she does not expect the other Spiders to understand her choice. Finally, she dies to pass her family important info on their enemies.
In short, Paku sacrifices herself for the Spider, not only the group, but also the individuals. She shows that the group is more than…well…the group. The Spider is not simply a concept, as Chrollo created it, but it is first and foremost a group of individuals and a family. Pakunoda shows that there is something genuine there.
Pakunoda chooses to do what she believes is the best for both Chrollo and the group. However, by doing so she betrays Chrollo’s ideals.
This is interesting because in Jesus’s story too there are two famous traitors aka Judas and Peter himself.
Judas’s betrayal is the most famous one and it is the one mentioned by Chrollo himself. Judas sold Jesus for money and kissed him to point him to the guards. When it comes to the series, it is interesting what Chrollo says here:
Tumblr media
These words foreshadow Hisoka’s role throughout the arc. Hisoka is not a traitor simply because he was never truly a part of the group. Actually this turns out to be an advantage to Chrollo because it lets him talk with Hisoka despite Kurapika’s chain. Moreover, Hisoka’s obsession with him makes him willing to help Chrollo get his nen back.
Peter betrays Jesus out of fear. His betrayal does not really damage Jesus, but it is a moral one because he renegades him three times. Pakunoda betrays Chrollo as well, but she does so out of love for who Chrollo is. She refuses Chrollo’s laws and ironically embraces what is Jesus’s law  aka love.
All in all, it is interesting that Chrollo could not foresee neither Hisoka nor Paku’s choices. He refuses to aknowledge that a member of the group might let personal interests get in the way of the Spider. This is well shown when Chrollo interprets Hisoka’s fake prophecy as a sign that he has been manipulated. Let’s highlight that Hisoka’s trick was very convoluted and it could have easily failed. One of the reasons why it worked is that Chrollo’s beliefs in the loyalty of the spiders is absolute. This is confirmed even when he confronts Kurapika and his heartbeats leave no room for doubt. However, Chrollo is proven wrong twice. This is interesting because it proves once again that Chrollo has trouble completely aknowledging others as their own people. This also contrasts him futher with Jesus, who knew perfectly that Judas and Peter would have betrayed him and still loved both despite it.
In conclusion, I would say that the Spiders as a whole are a group of sinners, who try to find a reason to keep on living through each other. However, even if this is heartwarming, their loyalty to Chrollo’s philosophy is one of the reasons, which stops them from properly growing and becoming better people.
These are my two cents on the religious motif surrounding them. Maybe new chapters will offer more.
Thank you for the ask!

I hope nothing but best and well for you 💚
Now more than ever, I’m watching the edge of the cliff. Stuck my hands in the dirt on the ledge to feel ‘what it would be like’’ as I clean my hands and get back to peak over.
It feel the same as always, as if I’ve had the same goddamn nightmare since I was a child.
White ghosts at the bottom, a fall accompanied by violins and the sound of hearts being shattered, but then again cold hearts don’t bleed.
