“The shift from an agricultural dominant economy in South Africa, to that of a manufacturing and commerce based one happened only about a hundred years ago after the discovery of diamonds and gold.

For farm workers around the country, little has changed in terms of working and employment conditions. The agro industrial business advocates would like us to believe that this is not the case, but a visit to any farm (that one can gain entry to) usually proves otherwise.

For some workers, in industries such as sugar and forest plantations, workers are subjected to feudal conditions, as well as rampant privatization, resulting in little job and social welfare security.

Recently, for workers who for years were trapped in the countryside by numerous laws governing their movement, they are now forcibly evicted by mechanization and privatization.”

South African photographers Cedric Nunn on his series documenting the lives of farm workers in South Africa.
