adding onto this!!!! i just realised that the fact that tj was wrongfully accused of murdering someone could also tie to the book
spoilers for the book in case you haven’t read it, but basically—
at the end, wilson’s wife myrtle is killed by the person driving gatsby’s car. obviously everyone assumes it’s gatsby, and gatsby ends up getting killed by wilson as an act of revenge - ALSO, tom buchanan is the one that tells wilson that it’s gatsby’s car, leading to gatsby getting killed
but it wasn’t gatsby driving, it was daisy (tom’s wife) who was driving the car, and she was the one who actually killed myrtle (albeit by accident)
and that’s the same as what happens to tj here — he’s wrongfully accused of murder (and tom buchanan is the one who frames him) and he almost gets put in prison for something he didn’t do, the same way gatsby gets killed for something he didn’t do
someone else has probably noticed this before but i still think it’s neat
i also didn’t realise this and i can’t remember if it’s actually in the manga or just the anime, but the “best friend” that TJ kills is actually wilson!

another reference to the book is the fact that the security company is manhasset security - manhasset seems to be the inspiration for east egg, which is a fictional neighbourhood, and partially where the great gatsby takes place (and where buchanan lives)
also fucked up that they gave tj green eyes. i choose to believe they’re blue. big. blue.

i just realised something about tj eckleburg in bsd and i’d like to point it out bc i think it’s a neat detail
so, as a lot of people may know, the character comes from the great gatsby - doctor tj eckleburg is a on billboard and he’s got huge blue eyes and yellow spectacles - and in the book, a character called wilson looks at him and says that “god is always watching”, which is where the “eyes of god” thing comes from in bsd
i feel like that’s very well known, but something that i didn’t realise but i think is a cool detail if i’m right, is why tj tries to kill himself with a degreasing agent for metal when fitzgerald goes to find him. it always seemed a little random to me why this would be the way he’d kill himself since there are much easier ways
but i think the reason for this is because in the book, wilson is the one who gives him the title of “god” and wilson works at a car repair shop, which is a place where a degreasing agent for metal would be used - and since wilson and tj eckleburg are connected, it would make sense to give bsd’s tj a little tie back to that
very small detail, and ofc idk if this is actually why he‘a written to try to kill himself in this way, but i still think it’s a cool detail if so!

such a non issue but i hate when people say every bsd character is gay besides fitzgerald just because he has a wife. guys. bisexual people exist. he is based on gatsby from the great gatsby. the most bisexual a character can get from a book set in the 1920s. dpmo
#yes i know this isn’t an issue at all#but like#he’s not canonically straight ☝️#and i need people to stop saying he is#LOOK AT HIM!#just look at him for 3 seconds then get back to me#bsd#bungou stray dogs#bungo stray dogs#francis fitzgerald
