The first known patent act in the world was the Venetian Patent Statute, enacted by the Republic of Venice in 1474. This statute is widely recognized as one of the earliest formal legal frameworks for patent protection.
The Venetian Patent Statute provided inventors with exclusive rights to their inventions for a limited period, specifically 10 years. It aimed to encourage innovation and the dissemination of new ideas by granting inventors legal protection against unauthorized use of their inventions. This early patent system helped lay the foundation for modern patent laws by establishing the principle that inventors should be rewarded for their contributions to technology and society.
Between 1474 and 1788, the Venetian Senate granted about 2000 patents: 28 between 1474 and 1500, 593 between 1500 and 1600, 605 between 1600 and 1700, and 670 between 1700 and 1788. Venetian patents were granted free of payment, "which explains their relatively high number".

The International Patent Classification (IPC) system was established by the Strasbourg Agreement in 1971 and came into force in 1975. The IPC system is an essential tool for categorizing patent documents by the specific technical areas they pertain to. This facilitates efficient searching and identification of relevant prior art during the patent examination process worldwide.
The IPC divides technology into sections, classes, subclasses, and groups, providing a hierarchical system that allows for detailed classification. It is periodically revised to account for technological advancements and emerging fields of innovation. The creation of the IPC marked a significant step towards international cooperation in the patent field, promoting a standardized approach to patent documentation and facilitating greater access to patent information across different jurisdictions.

Did you know? The first plant patent in the United States was granted under the U.S. Plant Patent Act of 1930, which allowed plant breeders to patent new and distinct varieties of plants. This was a significant development because it provided legal protection for plant varieties and encouraged innovations in horticulture and agriculture. The very first plant patent, Plant Patent No. 1, was awarded to Henry Bosenberg on August 18, 1931. The patent was for the "New Dawn" rose, a climbing rose known for its vigorous growth and repeat blooming capability. This pioneering patent marked the beginning of intellectual property rights for plant breeders and has since contributed to the growth and diversification of plant varieties in agriculture and horticulture. Did you know? John Ruggles was a U.S. Senator from Maine, known for his involvement in the development of the U.S. patent system. He played a significant role in the passage of the Patent Act of 1836, which established the modern patent system and led to the creation of the United States Patent Office. Ruggles was awarded Patent No. 1 under the new system on July 13, 1836, for an invention related to a steam locomotive traction wheel. His invention focused on improving the efficiency of steam locomotives by providing better traction and reducing slippage on the tracks. This patent was notably the first one issued after the Patent Office was reorganized, following the destruction of many earlier records in the Patent Office fire of December 1836. His contribution was instrumental in formalizing patent administration and supporting innovation in the rapidly industrializing United States. Follow for more amazing IP stories

Did you know? Samuel Hopkins was the first person to receive a U.S. patent on July 31, 1790. His patent was for an innovative process of making potash, an important ingredient used in the production of soap and fertilizer. Potash is chemically composed principally of potassium carbonate. Hopkins' patent was signed by President George Washington, Attorney General Edmund Randolph, and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. This event marked the beginning of the United States patent system, establishing a legal foundation for protecting inventors' rights and encouraging innovation.

Did you know? Thomas L. Jennings (1791–1856) holds the distinction of being the first African-American to receive a patent, granted on March 3, 1821. In his twenties, Jennings established himself as a tailor and later ventured into opening a dry cleaning business in New York City. It was there that he invented the “dry-scouring” technique, a precursor to modern dry cleaning, and secured a patent for his process. Jennings' achievement sparked significant controversy, as the patent laws of the time (dating back to 1793) prohibited slaves from patenting their inventions. These laws upheld the unjust view that "the master is the owner of the fruits of the labor of the slave, both manual and intellectual.” Jennings’ story is a testament to the power of innovation and the struggle for intellectual property rights. In 1861 patent rights were finally extended to slaves, 5 years after Jennings’ death. Follow for more such amazing IP stories.

In 2022, in the case of Thaler v. Vidal, the Federal Circuit affirmed that only human beings can be named inventors on U.S. patents, thereby excluding artificial intelligence (AI) from being listed as an inventor. But while the court’s decision blocked a potentially radical extension of patent rights, it has done nothing to calm growing worries that AI is threatening to upend other aspects of IP law. Use of AI tools such as generative AI (eg. ChatGPT) for new inventions do not pose a challenge for now. However, are the IP laws equipped to handle the possibility when AI systems design own inventions? How will the human inventors compete with AI generated inventions? Will it be fair to human inventors? As the capabilities of AI advances, the question arises: Should patents for inventions by AI have a shorter lifespan than those created by humans? We discuss some compelling reasons favouring a shorter patent lifespan for AI-created inventions.

Trademarks are a vital component of the business world, serving as badges of origin and representing the unique identities of companies and their products or services. Misconceptions about trademarks can negatively impact a business's brand value by diluting brand identity, eroding customer trust, increasing competition, leading to legal issues, limiting expansion opportunities, and missing out on potential branding advantages. In this video, we aim to shed light on some common misconceptions surrounding trademarks, unraveling the myths that often shroud this important form of intellectual property.

Recently, Samsung reportedly banned the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools from its premises after its employees inadvertently leaked sensitive company data on three separate occasions. Secrecy and security of sensitive information such as #intellectualproperty is a major concern as the users of #ChatGPT (and other similar generative AI tools) have tremendously increased and the incidents of unintentional data leakage is on the rise. It looks like such generative AI tools are going to stay for a while (or probably forever) and it may pose a threat to IP secrecy and security. We discuss some of the ways in which individuals and organizations can safeguard their intellectual property from ChatGPT (or other such generative AI tools).
