Going through old sketchbooks and found this page I enjoy. I was playing with mark making using different inking tools and gouache. Initially was just practicing hand drawings but slowly evolved into a way of emphasizing the folds of the hand by varying the tool I used. Tekkonkinkreet was my first introduction to Taiyou Matsumoto’s work. Shortly after I devoured all his comics. Takemitsuzamurai is still my favorite of his works, but Tekkonkinkreet will always have a special place for being the one that introduced me to Matsumoto’s stories.

Every so often I do a self portrait to remind me of where I am and that I’m still here. It really helps me to stay grounded when I do these.

Akira is one of those series' that has influenced a lot of people in my generation, and still continues to do so. Katsuhiro Otomo is definitely one of the most influential comic artists in the world.
