A perfect example of a film that can create so much meaningful character development and not have a single spoken word. This animation has a beautiful little story where no dialogue takes place and yet you can easily follow and learn about what the characters feelings and true desires are.

As soon as this short starts it pulls you in with it’s perfectly timed edits to awkward comical moments. Which is exactly the kind of pacing we would like to achieve in the edit for some of our scenes. Also most of the film is completely sound effect driven, which is perfect for an example of how a story can be driven with no dialogue. This is the kind of quirky dark humour we would like to bring to our series.

This short was perfect for seeing how an animated feature on a face would look. This was a complete mouth replacement with another (older) person’s mouth. It gave the face a kind of eerie feel which was perfect for what the short was trying to achieve, but it made us feel confident to go with large cartoonish eyes as it feels more light hearted and comical. We also liked the presence it gave on the bus with everybody staring at the mum and child!

This short is made by a YouTuber called kickthePJ. It was perfect to start our journey into creativity! The film is humorous and very visual, with a cool quirky set design. PJ himself is an interesting subject as he uses his knowledge of film making to make high quality content for YouTube as well as continuing to make his own short films! He has this a very unique style of film making which makes him stand out from other short film or YouTube videos.

After taking these photo’s at an idea generation meeting (see they can be fun!) and looking at them. We liked the idea of people using these giant cartoon eyes as barriers between them and other people. We ran with this idea for a while and tossed ideas back and forth. But then it dawned on us “What if the eyes are just a preconception of themselves, and the fact they feel like it draws attention to them”. After this Ideas just came in massive waves, nailing the idea we wanted to make a web series. Making it about 2 people that perceive themselves in the same way but have different personality traits.

It all started with one weekend, a microwave and some giant cartoon eyes.
We gave ourselves a challenge to help us get back into a creative state of mind, so we could brainstorm some film ideas. so we decided we were going to enter a film competition held by RCBC called Trailer Trash. The idea was to make films that encouraged the recycling of your old electronics.
So Thus MIKEY was born! Who was a microwave with 2 giant carntoonish eyes and a cheeky grin to match. We nailed down the idea during the week around varying different work schedules. We shot and edited it over the and submitted it by the following Monday.
It was a great experience and we then had a moment of creative explosion using these eyes to make everything come alive....... and then. BOOM giant cartoon eyes had made their way to own very faces. This was the tiny seed that planted the first concept for Botheration.
