Writing Advice #2
If your character arc feels kinda flat or fake or like you’ve accidentally written a pamphlet instead of a person, Ask yourself what they’d do if they were just… petty and a little emotionally stunted.
like, not in a evil-villain way, I mean in the way real people are. In the way where someone says “you hurt me” and they’re like “oh okay cool i’m just never gonna talk to you again, problem solved.” or when they spiral, they don’t journal or grow, they start subtweeting or stalking their ex’s new girlfriend’s Social Media Profile or binge-eating hot cheetos, in a weird power move against no one.
Because people rarely go through pain gracefully. We flail, we regress, we lie to ourselves and pretend we're doing “fine” while googling “is it normal to cry during grocery shopping.” and then (Maybe) eventually, we start figuring shit out. Not because we’re heroes, no, because staying broken forever gets exhausting.
So let your character be petty and mess up things for stupid reasons. And let them make a bad choice not because the plot needs it, but because they’re tired and bitter and still learning how to be a person.

go on more walks. walk for no reason. walk to solve a problem. walk to blow off steam. walk to get outside. walk to listen, read, and learn. walk to escape distractions. walk to improve your health. walk to think. a simple walking habit can change absolutely everything.

one of the biggest things I can advocate for (in academia, but also just in life) is to build credibility with yourself. It’s easy to fall into the habit of thinking of yourself as someone who does things last minute or who struggles to start tasks. people will tell you that you just need to build different habits, but I know for me at least the idea of ‘habit is sort of abstract and dehumanizing. Credibility is more like ‘I’ve done this before, so I know I can do it, and more importantly I trust myself to do it’. you set an assignment goal for the day and you meet it, and then you feel stronger setting one the next day. You establish a relationship with yourself that’s built on confidence and trust. That in turn starts to erode the barrier of insecurity and perfectionism and makes it easier to start and finish tasks. reframing the narrative as a process of building credibility makes it easier to celebrate each step and recognize how strong your relationship with yourself can become

I’m 20 and some days it’s like a thorn in my heart. I’m 20 and some days it’s like tender mornings of childhood long forgotten. I’m 20 and I don’t feel it- suspended in some limbo of young adult. I roam the world to find the colours I saw in childhood, look at monkey bars I used to climb but my feet touch the ground now and I try to find the peace of adulthood but maybe peace appears in hindsight, in retrospect. I’m 20 and I don’t feel it- not a child, not an adult- like a wolf-dog, always in between.
-Ritika Jyala, excerpt from The Flesh I Burned

Kind reminder that a degree will not get up one day and leave you, cheat on you, cut your funds, disrespect you or assault you. A degree will be worth a thousand sleepless nights and rivers of tears, because in the end it does matter more than anything else. A degree will make you an independent and undefeated woman, so stop belittling the importance of education nowadays. Every woman who studies is a woman who is ensuring a greater future for all women.

One of the things I love about kdramas is that it really subverts what masculinity is supposed to be. You see the loser who's down bad for the female lead (Lovely runner, queen of tears, Love Next Door, Strong Girl Do Bong Soon, the Judge from Hell), you see the soft masculinity in hometown cha cha cha, summer strike and Doctor Slump and extraordinary attorney woo, the protective kind of masculinity in any of Ji Chang Wook's and Ahn Bo Hyun's works, the reassured and confident masculinity of Seo Kang Joon in Undercover High school and Lee Jun Hyuk in Love scout, the playful masculinity in Twinkling Watermelon and Crash Course in Romance, the stoic but gentle masculinity in Doctor Romantic and Hierarchy, and the "I care about you and only you" kind of masculinity in Vincenzo to name a few.
This is progress from the old kdramas and I get that it's fictional and in real life, some of these actors are assholes. But in the era where Toxic masculinity is rampant, I think we can turn towards kdrama to have some inkling of what kind of man we should strive to be and what kind of man we should want. This should not something we see only in fiction. We should raise our sons (I'm 21) to be like this so that one day it's not just a concept for fictional love stories.
