I love New Vegas as much as the next person but sometimes playing this game feels like an effort in micromanagement.
Like if you want to get the fullest narrative experience, playing it as a Wild Card/Hedging Your Bets Courier is best, imo. Except then there's all the breadcrumb sidequests you have to look up and double-check and make sure you're not pissing off one faction or the other if you still want to partake in the narrative, figuring out what ORDER to do everything in, while also remembering this is a Bethesda game that spooks and breaks things if you think about it wrong for too long (JANE IS CURRENTLY IN MY FUCKING PRESIDENTIAL SUITE AND WON'T LEAVE AND I CAN'T GET ED-E TO THE FOLLOWERS).
Fallout 3 has its flaws and there's plenty I wish it did better but I will say it at least it never made me open twelve wiki pages and made me feel like that one part of Problem Sleuth with the diplomacy mesh.

my new courier six named ladybird jones! heavily inspired by 70s blaxploitation and black westerns from the 30s.
ladybird is a former showgirl from new reno with good karma. she is mr. house's protege and likes kissing tommy torini. she takes her job seriously, and works more in line to stabilize the smaller factions outside of the vegas strip, rather than destroy or ignore them.

I would still use my turn signals in the Mad Max Wasteland. They'd call me "Signal" because I'd hit my blinker before ramming the enemy hot rods into the side of a desert ravine. I'd use my turn signal every time. They would respect me for this.

I maintain that Fallout 4 is not a good *Fallout* game specifically, mainly in that there's a lot of wasted potentials and completely fucked writing there, but it's not a bad game in its own right. The gunplay, setting, companions, and settlement-building are all genuinely fun to work with. But the writing in a Fallout game is part of what makes it or breaks it, because even as a roleplaying game, it's still a *lore-driven* roleplaying game.
One case in point, the only reason I can think of for the Brotherhood of Steel being made the way it was in FO4, despite the clear setup and need for a reformation arc being stated as far back as FALLOUT 2, is that Bethesda *wanted* to stick to making an "evil" power armor faction, but after the Enclave was finally decimated in FO3 didn't really have a lot of options for it. Like it was very clear, through FO2, through Tactics, through FO3, and ESPECIALLY New Vegas with Veronica that the violently isolationist technocult shit was literally killing them. That they *needed* to change and becoming more tolerant and willing to cooperate with those outside the Brotherhood, or else the faction would not survive. Instead we...doubled down and made them not only even more fanatic but racist to all nonhumans, even the ones that weren't their enemies. Good job, that shows a lot of clear understanding of previous lore.
(Same with the super mutants. Oh my god. Enough with the super mutants. FO3 and Vault 87 played interestingly with the concept of non-Master Army mutants, but we didn't need the Institute to be making super mutants in addition to synths. Bringing back the intelligent deathclaws ala Goris would have been far more interesting a concept, especially with the new and improved deathclaw models we got in FO4.)
Another case in point - it just feels like several of the FO3 "callback" characters - Madison Li, MacCready, Elder Maxson - were just there as set dressing and not actually a continuance of the story. We could have had more elaboration on what happened in the Capital Wasteland after the Lone Wanderer's antics *through* them, the same way FO2 elaborates on a lot of the Vault 13 Dweller's legacy and instead we...didn't. We didn't even get much of it with Maxson. The Lyons' Pride went from a major player in Capital politics to a barely regarded "they died" footnote, same with Rivet City. No mention of Project Purity with Madison? Nothing about the fates of Little Lamplight or Big Town after MacCready aged out?
In essence, I would enjoy FO4 a lot more if it was, unfortunately, literally any other game and didn't have the Fallout label attached to it.
That being said, criticisms of FO4 aside, anyone who says New Vegas is the only good one is a poser (especially if they didn't even TRY to play the original isometrics) and we *really* need to start bringing that word back and calling people as such.
As a Fallout fan, it’s so depressing seeing so many people say New Vegas is “the only good one.” Like, Fallout 3 was amazing. It was so good and successful that it literally brought back a dead franchise. You wouldn’t even have New Vegas if it weren’t for Fallout 3 and how popular it was. Of course you can like New Vegas more, that’s fine. But to dismiss 3 (and also 4 which, while not perfect, is a good game too) as bad games is both ridiculous and wrong.

bethesda should not make fallout 5. bethesda should take the improved engine capabilities of modern hardware and remaster fallout 3 to have the detail and vibes of adam adamowicz's original vision. i do not want Vault Boy's Starfield Adventure. i want fallout 3 but fucking haunted
