BOUND FOR FREEDOM YEAR 7, DAY TWO: “FANTASY”

Amongst the many Endless Possibilities for Sonic and Sally, few are more magical than Fantasy! Swords and spells, dungeons and dragons, prophecies and palaces...who knows what lies in wait?

Ooh, this is a fun idea, a Sally who's never known Sonic crossing over with kinda the original Sonic! And the pic definitely puts that dynamic to good use; the side-by-side racing action is very fun, and the way they each appraise each other-Sal in confusion, Sonic in excitement-gives it a fantastic sense of Personality. The color-streak backdrop really lets you emphasize that action really nicely too, and you handle the strong draw of the poses really nicely, the sharp turns that define their motion really work. For that matter I think this is the first time I've seen this AU Sally design of yours and I dig the design; the use of the long pony-tail to emphasize her speed is a particularly nice touch, but I also appreciate the sleeker more aerodynamic take on her classic vest too.

Keeping the theme of "alternative universes/zones" for all the prompts; here is a classic styled duo, with Sally from my 'What if it Was Sally?' au, a zone where Sonic never existed and Sally takes up his role in the fight against Robotnik.

Oh wow you do a FANTASTIC job capturing that “Classic Sonic” look and feel across the pic here; your Sally design is a particular highlight, and I definitely appreciate the less-is-more ways you play with her original SatAM design to make it fit a bit more overtly into the original games aesthetic while keeping the core of the look almost completely intact. But the whole thing works really well, I’m especially struck by how nicely you recapture Green Hill Zone itself here, and the fun dynamic of Sonic ‘n’ Sally reaching out for each other each with their own Power Ring, as if gearing up for a new high-speed adventure, makes for a very charming dynamic.

Yay, it's Sonally Week!! Day one prompt: Classic!

Looking at Sally's original Satam design, it does match the designs of Sonic and Tails, it's just the art style itself thats different. Really all you gotta do is give her the bigger hands and feet, maybe add some gloves too and viola! I also added some elements from her pilot design with the ponytail and the boots, as well as the chipmunk stripe from her reboot design.

Can easily imagine Sonic and Sally running around Green Hill together! ^^

But man, I really wanna play a classic 2D Sonic game with Sally and the rest of Freedom Fighters in it. Or like, even just a mod where I can play as Sally...

Also backgrounds suck and I hate them. Ugh, just pretend it looks okay...

AND for the cool pic! The sharp graphic look of the backdrop is really cool, and the gold-blue color contrast plays off of Sonic and Sally themselves perfectly. REALLY great work on the posing here too; the motion streaks for Sonic are a particularly strong touch, but both of them have this really fun sense of dynamic motion in the neat way they float in the frame while capturing a very distinct sort of Action. The subtle way Sal's fur transitions from brown to auburn in the hair is a really neat design choice too.

Sonally Week: Classic

This is the ship that dragged me by my legs into the Sonic series and fandom, so why not draw from memory them in their outfits from Satam? (Ironically in 2018 I became a fan of Satam, when an attempt at a war-staged story in a game flunked hard)

Sonally week 2025 day 1 classic

A Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction for @boundforfreedomsonsal event Sonally week 2025 day 1 classic.

In her bedroom in Acorn castle, Sally Acorn find her old blue jacket that she used to wear back during her teenage years with her knight and lover Sonic, which Sally decide to wear it for a bit of nostalgia feelings. As Sally put on the jacket, the princess recall that she was almost naked except for her jacket and boots as her fur cover her private parts.

“BOUND FOR FREEDOM, YEAR SEVEN, DAY ONE: “Classic”

“Play The Classics”

"I thought I heard something back here."

Sonic's rapidly-moving fingers stopped dancing across the piano keys as that familiar voice caught his ear. He turned back to see Lady Acorn entering the chamber. "You really do have good ears," he said before turning his attention back to the piano. "I thought for sure this neck of the woods was remote enough that no one would even think to come back here, let alone hear anything."

"I hope I'm not disturbing you," the squirrel said, drawing closer.

"Nah, I just got a bit lost is all," Sonic said, fingers hovering just over the keys. "Found this old thing by accident. Thought I'd play around a bit, see how terrible I was at it."

"I'm afraid you're not a very good liar," the Lady said with a smirk. "The music I heard just now...it was far too lovely to come from a mere amateur."

He looked back at her sharply. "So what, only the High And Mighty can make good music?" he asked.

"That's not what I said," she replied, "but I suppose I can't blame you. My father certainly thinks that way."

"Your father pays me t'fight, not t'play," Sonic said, beginning to rise up from the piano stool. "It was fun t'try, but-"

The Lady put a gentle hand to his shoulder, prompting him to stay seated. "When I listened to you playing," she said softly, "I could tell...whoever was making this music, it was a source of joy for them." She leaned down so that their eyes met. "And comfort."

He held her gaze for a moment. She smiled at him. His brows furrowed a bit. And then he turned his eyes away from her. "...would...you like t'hear more...?" he asked in a whisper. "It...might be nice t'play for someone with good ears for a change."

"I'd be honored," she replied in a whisper of her own.

And so she watched as his fingers began to move so quickly across the keys she could scarcely make out their movement. And from their speed, another beautiful melody began to emerge.

((OK, so this one has a bit of an odd inspiration behind it. Partly, it's a recreation of the cover for Archie's "Sonic the Hedgehog" #12, but mainly, it's actually based on this half-remembered fanfic I read eons ago (seriously, it's got to be close to 25 years ago at this point) which I think was called "Sonic The Warrior", and which featured a scene that's always stuck in my memory wherein Sonic, who in this story is, if I recall right, something of a vagabond traveling from place to place, showcases his ability to play piano to Princess Sally, which she finds highly soothing. I've never been able to find it again after the first time I read it, but in thinking over how I wanted to approach the idea of "Classic", I kept coming back to that scene, and decided to make my own interpretation of it here.))

DiC might not have, but it's worth remembering that SEGA of America at least seemed genuinely interested in potentially making Sally a bigger part of the overall franchise, so a consistent image for the character might indeed have been important to them. Good catch on the copyright, in any case; that suggests it's at least possible for them to have known about the vest even though they didn't end up using it.

So, SO much fun stuff here, everything is rendered with such a great bouncy energy that makes even relatively mundane posing feel energetic and dynamic. Lots of great little touches all over too, from the Dark Aura around Sally to Sonic's "Endgame"-inspired whiplash confession-cover-up roller-coaster in the bottom corner XD

The original already has Personality to spare, but the redraw definitely does make the posing feel that much more active and dynamic, and I appreciate the choice to play up the Teasing Play of the interaction as well; the expressions especially REALLY pop in the new version.

Wow that's a FASCINATING discovery there, especially because I'm genuinely very curious about how the timeline of it all works; Sal's vest definitely does not come around as an element of her character until Season 2 (or at the very least, no development/concept art we've seen of her leading into the first season gives it to her), yet I'd always thought that the release of these two-episode VHS collections were contemporary to the airing of Season 1. Did the color-approval artist somehow have knowledge of then-upcoming Season 2 design elements? And to make it doubly weird, Sal's vest in the color-approval version is notably a different color from her boots, apparently some shade of Purple...A.K.A. the exact same color-combo used by the fake Sally in Archie's "Princess Sally" mini-series!
