Carlos Monzon, known as ‘Shotgun,’ was born on this day in 1942. One of the greatest Middleweight boxers ever Monzon grew up in the slums of San Javier, Argentina, one of 13 children. His initial trainer remembered Monzon “as a skinny kid with rage in his eyes.” On 11/7/70 Monzon defeated Nino Benvenuti for the Middleweight Championship. Monzon would reign as champion for 7 years defending 14 times. Monzon was relentless & a superb technical boxer, dominating behind a stiff jab & long right-hand punch. A controversial celebrity in Argentina his composure in the ring was contrasted by his wild, violent, ill-tempered life outside of it. He was found guilty of killing his wife in 1989 & while on furlough from jail died in a car crash in 1995. http://ift.tt/2ufLg3T

World Boxing has said adieu to another underappreciated champion this week. Juan Manuel Marquez has retired from professional boxing just two weeks shy of his 44th birthday. Why underappreciated? For a significant part of his career Marquez fought in a style outside the norm of the ‘typical’ Mexican boxer – Marquez could be patient, tactical & cautious & was a brilliant counter puncher. He also operated largely in the shadows of Julio Cesar Chavez long in decline by the time Marquez even got his first title shot against Freddie Norwood in ’99. Marquez was also overshadowed by his peers Erik Morales & Marco Antonio Bererra who lit up the squared circle with their combustible rivalry. Meanwhile Marquez made a steady workman like climb back up the rankings. He changed his style to become more ‘exciting’ & therefore the BIG FIGHTS came. None more so than the four historic bouts with Pound For Pound King Manny Pacquiao. Fight fans will enjoy debating the out come of the first two fights for ages but what’s clear is though Pacquiao won the battle on paper Marquez clearly won the war with the bone chilling knockout in round six. Marquez finishes his career as a seven time, four weight world champion – one of only two other Mexican fighters to accomplish such a feet. No doubt there will be many kudos & accolades levied upon long reigning heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko following his official retirement from boxing as of today. His record was impeccable & his reign will likely be unmatched for the foreseeable future. Some interesting points to consider though are these, Klitschko spent the majority of his reign without the benefit of this hindsight. He was at times not very popular, he was derided for his technical, defensive style by a generation that had watched Tyson knock the heads off of opponents – ‘The Tyson Effect’ adversely affected the appreciation for what Klitschko had managed to achieve. Like Gene Tunney before him who beat the more ‘exciting’ Jack Dempsey, Tunney was not appreciated in his era. Thoughtful, intelligent & humble Tunney & Klitschko both suffered from being ‘Too Good’ & in a sport of warriors mistakenly viewed as weak or timorous. Hopefully history will remember Klitschko for who he really was: the second longest reigning heavyweight champion of all time only eclipsed by Joe Louis.
