When I read this post yesterday, I was shook in so many ways. The above truths are loaded with all the emotions we would rather not address as humans (I'm talking to just the humans now, everyone else can continue scrolling like it applies to everyone else except them). Most of us have been on BOTH giving and recieving ends of these internal mountains: Pride, lack of accountability for shitty behaviour, denial of reality as a way to "protect" yourself from cold weather, battling to keep up or break down that wall that let's you fake perfection coz you actually can't believe that you bleed or make others bleed. These words also present the harsh reality that being mere flesh and spirit results in the long distance from this perfection you wear without siezing. But quiet introspection (sometimes with aid from some form of therapy) offers one an open window into yourself to find the parts of you that hurt so much that cannot face your own flaws. If you keep running, you will keep losing and you'll never grow. If you keep pointing at everyone else except for yourself, even where you earned the weight of what is yours to carry, you will not grow. Being an asshole outwardly and then pretending like it is beneath you to behave in such a manner = Cntl+Alt+Delete is a formula that holds no water. Anticipating a long-term, "forever and a day" kind of relationship without a certain level of intimacy built is like anticipating sweet berry jam from pressed bananas. Sex is sex. Intimacy on the other hand requires that you log in mentally, spiritually and emotionally. This unfortunately is not a notion that we are all trained for and that is not our fault. This is one of the truths that 2018 has taught me. In retrospect, it has been a lesson I was being taught for years but I only started learning this year. I only started listening this year. For so many years I dedicated myself to loving people into better versions of themselves - a version that is self-aware, a version that is communicative, truthful, open and intimate. There is absolutely nothing you can do to move another human being into one direction or another, even if it is a positive one that both you and them will benefit from. No amount of love and loyalty shown will make you worth their effort unless they decide that they are ready. Learn to pick your battles and walk away from the ones that are much bigger than you. Focus on your own growth. Learn to choose yourself guilt-free, over and over. Invest spiritual energy and love into people that will reciprocate willingly, with no measure and no fear. Sometimes we get stuck in situations that we know we aren't meant to settle for because we feel there might not be anything better out there, like it's as good as it will ever be. Growing up, my mom single-handedly ran a tight ship with a clear set of rules and regulations that applied equally to her army of 3 daughters. 💣We used to complain about her military style of parenting and often compared our household with those of our peers, who often had what we thought was heaps more "freedom" than us. Even her approach to emotions was unconventional, with us getting pep-talks on our approach towards the challenges we faced instead of hugs and back-rubs. She would always say "Neneza, can you think of a realistic solution for this problem? If your answer is no, pray over it. Pray for the strength to adapt to the changes and to overcome the discomfort they may bring. But if your answer is yes, you better wipe those tears and prepare for battle, young lion!" 😱😂 Looking back, I realise that the comradary and team-work she advocated for taught us how to love and respect her without ever mistaking that comradary for a friendship with one of our peers. Looking back, preparing us for the real world took priority over us liking her. Looking back, was she a perfect parent? No. Could I have done with more hugs? Yes, hle bathong... 😂 But my heart is full of gratitude because her training and affirmations continue to be a point of reference in my low moments. The tricky thing about life & "co-humaning" is that we always need to remember that we are one part logic, one part instinct and countless parts of emotion. This means that when we deal with challenges like loss (in the form of death, a break up etc) - we tend to apply step-by-step guides of how to deal with it in the hopes that the mind will lead the other troops into salvation in single-file order. Then we tend to feel frustrated when our feels catch us in the middle of our faux-swag, just to remind us of which flight we are actually on. #FeelsAirways 🤣 Note to self & other humaning humans: Give it time.
