how to find literally any post on a blog in seconds (on desktop)
there are so many posts about ~tumblr is so broken, you canât find any post on your own blog, itâs impossible, bluhrblub~
I am here to tell you otherwise! it is in fact INCREDIBLY easy to find a post on a blog if youâre on desktop/browser and you know what youâre doing:
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant. every single post, every single time. in chronological order starting with the most recent post. note: it will not find #croissants or that time you made the typo #croidnssants. for a tag with multiple words, itâs just /tagged/my-croissant and it will show you everything with the exact phrase #my croissant
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant/chrono will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the exact phrase #croissant, but it will show them in reverse order with the oldest firstÂ
url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isnât as perfect at finding everything, but itâs generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it âlook at my croissantâ) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it wonât necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find itâs still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order
url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case youâre taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memesÂ
url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if youâre looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc
url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if youâre looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quicklyÂ
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I donât know why you have audio posts tagged croissant)Â
the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog!Â
caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or âcustom themeâ) enabled. a âcustom themeâ is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. Iâve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks.Â
if the person doesnât have a âcustom themeâ enabled, youâre beholden to the search bar. still, Iâve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else
if youâre on mobile, Iâm sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if youâre able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, youâll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and itâll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if thereâs no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)Â

Do I have a place to use this? I have no idea.
Did that stop me from downloading this to figure out later for free-writing purposes? Absolutely not.
I just found the funniest font ever

Like. What is this. Why is this. Who is the target audience of this?

NO WAIT THATâS SO SMART WAIT
When I was a kid I had a book of like, "fun physics experiments for kids". And one of them was an "experiment" where you hold an object by a string and just by focusing on the direction you wanted it to swing, it would start to move in that direction even without your input. The book of course explained that this was the ideomotor effect, a phenomenon where your thoughts can create minute, unconscious movements in your body.
Then a couple years later I got a fortune-telling kit that included a pendulum. You hold the pendulum over a piece of paper that says "yes" and "no" and ask a question, and whichever way the pendulum moves is the answer.
At which point I was like "hey WAIT a minute", and in hindsight I think that experience explains most things about who I am as a person

Iâm selfishly glad that people are getting crash courses on tumblr so i can learn more, I have had this app collecting dust bc I donât understand and was scared to post.
I think the nihilism finally kicked in so Iâm actually posting now, but thatâs neither here nor there.
âFypâ we donât do that here. I mean, Tumblr the app and website tries, but we don't do that here.
âBut then how will anyone see it?â peer review.
âHow do you get engagement?â by talking and engaging with other people. Or making a devastating typo. Either way.
âButââ Listen, youâre not doing solo stand up anymore. This is a group improv class being held in a SAW dungeon. Good luck.
#dawnâs thoughts#justdawnposting#listen im not good at social media#iâm just pretending im comfy#and assuming its okay to share my thoughts#bc thatâs what everyone else seems to be doing

So I had a hysterectomy today (hooray!) and I brought along my stuffed orca, Shamu, as a comfort object. And everyone i interacted with during my pre-op was like "Oh! Who's this?" so I was telling them all about him, how he's been with me since I was 9 and gone on every single vacation and road trip, and they were telling me about their own stuffed buddies (one lady said she still has hers after 40 years!) and all of this while I was signing consent forms and providing a list of the things I'd brought with me, you know, small talk.
So then a nurse comes over and goes "Okay, I've got some stickers I'll put on your things so we know they're yours" and I'm like "OK cool" so she puts a sticker on my coat and stickers on my bags of clothes and then she turns to Shamu and I'm like "oh I guess he gets a sticker too"
But no. She pulls out a hospital bracelet that's an exact copy of mine and slaps it on his tail, like so:

And i was delighted by this, so I took a picture to send to my friends, who were equally delighted, and were cracking me up with their reactions (like so:)

Anyway, they take me back and put me under, and when I awake groggily a few hours later it takes me a minute to get my bearings, so I don't notice Shamu at first. But then I realize he's tucked up next to me in the gurney, so I grab him, and my hand touches gauze.
And I'm like "huh?" so I look at him and I realize

They gave my fucking orca a hysterectomy

Going through my drafts today, itâs 2025 now 6.6
The reason why we're suddenly seeing a bunch of indie video games â particularly American indie video games â using vintage music is because the US finally has a public domain in sound recordings.
For context, until 1972, there was no federal copyright regime in the US for sound recordings; intellectual property law for sound recordings was devolved to the individual states, meaning there were fifty different sets of rules that might apply to any given recording, and some states allowed sound recordings to be protected for an indefinite term â i.e., in essence, perpetual copyright without expiration.
What changed in 1972 was the Sound Recording Amendment, which unified established federal copyright on sound recordings for the first time, but which allowed any pre-existing state-level copyrights for sound recordings published prior to February 15th, 1972 to run for their full term. Since most state-level sound recording copyrights had no fixed term (see above), this was capped at the "publication plus 95 years" rule which applies to other federal copyrights â with the twist that the 95-year cap on previously perpetual sound recording copyrights would count from 1972, not from the date of publication.
This effectively meant that no sound recordings in the US would enter the public domain until February 15th, 2067 â which doesn't do anyone a whole lot of good right now!
Fast forward to 2018, when another piece of federal legislation, the Music Modernisation Act, was passed. Though this act was mainly concerned with streaming royalties and such, it also contained provisions to grandfather certain sound recordings into the public domain earlier than the Sound Recording Amendment's all-or-nothing 2067 deadline. Specifically:
On January 1st, 2022, all sound recordings published before 1923 would enter the public domain
Sound recording published from 1923 through 1946 will enter the public domain 100 years after the date of first publication
Sound recordings published from 1947 through 1956 will enter the public domain 110 years after the date of first publication
In practice, what this means is:
All sound recordings first published before 1923 entered the public domain last year, on January 1st, 2022;
This year, 2023, is a "gap year" in which no sound recordings enter the public domain (i.e., being the 100th and final year of protection for sound recordings first published in 1923); and
On January 1st of next year â that is, January 1st of 2024 â new batches of sound recordings will begin to enter the US public domain on a yearly basis for the first time in history, starting with sound recordings first published in 1923.

âŚIâm still sitting back on the Homer and Odysseus were godly friends part. (And laughing of course đ) Arguably, Homer would be a diety compared to Ody since he created him, no? Odysseusâs POV, Homer (as the âauthorâ of Odyâs story, regardless of actual/evidence-based existence) created his story/world/existence, and so would be god-like.
Tldr: only incorrect originally about Ody, if you look at it âfrom a certain point of viewâ (- obiwan voice)

How to recover fic deleted from AO3 thatâs NOT on the Wayback machine
Sharing this because I just found out about this and it blew my mind.
The short version of it is: The Wayback Machine is not the only backup/archive of AO3 content out there. Itâs just the most user-friendly and immediately browsable.
THIS database on Archive.org contains most AO3 fics as text files, including plenty that are not Waybacked: https://archive.org/details/AO3_final_location
What youâll need: A browser for .sqlite3 files such as DB Browser for SQLite, an archive manager (e.g. WinRar or 7zip), good internet download speeds, and potentially a LOT of free GBs in storage space.
Not needed but heavily recommended: A download manager such as HTTP Downloader (so you donât lose the entire download the second your internet stutters).
1. Click here to get to the archiveâs files. Itâs going to look something like this:
ao3_current.sqlite3 and ao3_old_files.sqlite3 are metadata files. The .zip files contain fic, most of them in simple .txt format. The metadata files tell you which fic is in which zip.
The âcurrentâ metadata file is recent backups. The âoldâ metadata file seems to be fics archived until 2020ish.
2. First, download either ao3_current.sqlite3 or ao3_old_files.sqlite3. Now launch DB Browser for SQlite, then File > Open Database Read-Only > open the sqlite3 file. Now click on the Browse Data tab.
3. Itâs going to look like this.
4. The âFilter in any columnâ field can be used for keyword searches in, well, any column of this table. Be warned, it takes a while to update, give it time, itâs indexing.
5. Here I searched for all fic which gets a hit for the âAvengersâ keyword (usually fandom). You can also search for a specific title, author, description, etc.
Letâs try to locate the first fic on the list. Click on the field on the left - row 1, column 1.
On the right youâll see the full content of that cell. The most important thing here is the start - ao3_01. This means that the fic is located in ao3_old_files_part01.zip.
6. Download ao3_old_files_part01.zip and open it with your archive manager. Itâs 5.5 GB. This will take some time.
7. There are multiple ways to find the fic within the zip file. Probably the easiest way is to use your archive managerâs search/find function to locate the fic by keyword - author is a good bet here, or title if itâs unique enough - and extract that. This way you donât have to extract the entire archive. Be sure to add a wildcard operator (*) on either side of the keyword.
8. Extract the file and youâre done. Note: It will probably be in .txt format, and might be in one giant block of text. Just select-all and paste it to a proper word processor to restore the paragraph formatting.
+ I suppose if youâve got like a free TB of space you could just skip the metadata step and download all the zip files and unzip them and use a command line search tool for keywords, too. This will work with keywords like title, author and fandom that are part of the file title. The metadata file just contains additional info, like character fields, description, etc.
This isnât a perfect remedy, there are still fics that got deleted before they could get archived here. But it seems more complete than the stuff on the Wayback Machine on average.

CRAFTS!!!
Had a few folks interested in how I made the patches I posted for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, so I thought I'd give y'all my step-by-step process for making hand-embroidered patches!

First, choose your fabric and draw on your design. You can use basically any fabric for this - for this project I'm using some felt I've had lying around in my stash for ages.

Next, choose your embroidery floss. For my patches I split my embroidery floss into two threads with 3 strands each, as pictured. You can use as many strands in your thread as you prefer, but for the main body of my patches I prefer 3 strands.
Next you're going to start filling your design using a back stitch.

First, put in a single stitch where you want your row to start.

Poke your needle up through the fabric 1 stitch-length away from your first stitch.

Poke your needle back down the same hole your last stitch went into so they line up end-to-end.
Repeat until you have a row of your desired length (usually the length of that colour section from one end to the other). Once you have your first row, you're going to do your next row slightly offset from your first row so that your stitches lay together in a brick pattern like this:

Make sure your rows of stitches are tight together, or you'll get gaps where the fabric shows through.
Rinse and repeat with rows of back stitch to fill in your patch design.

When you're almost to the end of your thread, poke your needle through to the back of the fabric and pull the thread under the back part of the stitching to tuck in the end. Don't worry if it looks messy - no one's gonna see the back anyway.
This next step is fully optional, but I think it makes the patch design really pop. Once your patch is filled in, you can use black embroidery floss to outline your design (or whatever colour you want to outline with - it's your patch, do what you want). I use the full thread (6 strands, not split) of embroidery floss to make a thicker outline.

I use the same back stitch I used to fill the piece to make an outline that adds some separation and detail. You could use most any 'outlining' stitch for this, but I just use back stitch because it's just easier for me to do.
Once you're finished embroidering your patch, it's time to cut it out!

Make sure to leave a little border around the edge to use for sewing your patch on your jacket/bag/blanket/whatever, and be careful not to accidentally cut through the stitches on the back of the patch.
If you have a sturdy enough fabric that isn't going to fray, you can just leave it like this. If not, I recommend using a whip stitch/satin stitch to seal in the exposed edges (I find that splitting your embroidery floss into 3-strand threads works best for this).

And then you're done! At this point you can put on iron-on backing if you want, or just sew it on whatever you wanna put it on. Making patches this way does take a long time, but I feel that the results are worth it.
Thanks for reading this tutorial! I hope it was helpful. If anyone makes patches using this method, I'd love to see them! đ
